I have installed the same com-met tree ring and have no rust after a year. I used a 2x4 to hammer the rings into the ground to avoid chipping. Maybe you used a hammer and chipped the paint and it started to rust. But anyway you might use rustoleum spray paint, satin spruce green to paint and prevent future rust. see the attachment.

Very quick and easy to install. Makes that perfect circle you always strived for with the flexible plastic edging (and could never get). Once assembled around the tree, I found it easiest to cut into the soil with a small paint scraper following along the outside of the edging. Depending on whether I wanted it two or three inches into the soil, I could cut that depth. Then lightly tapping the metal ring into the ground with a hammer (use a block of wood to protect the paint finish). Done!
