What a mess! It would have been much faster and easier to add new mulch which is what I intend to do next time. The thing is, this red mulch color does the job. However, the devil is in the details. The real issue is controlling the application of the red color and preventing any of the color from hitting or splattering onto the house siding, driveway brickwork, grass, cement patio etc. Many areas will need to be protected with a tarp or cardboard and now it turns into a painting project. It’s no big deal but now it’s a project when it would be faster and simpler to just add new mulch. I decided not to finish coloring the mulch (I’ll mix in new mulch instead) when the spray bounced- off the mulch, over the protective cardboard and onto the white fence. The red color did wash off with a blast of water from my garden hose. I think this product would be ideal for use in wide-open areas that are a good distance from objects that could come in contact with the mulch coloring.

The end result of using this stuff is pretty good, but getting there is pretty messy! Even after reading other reviewers’ experiences and planning ahead, I still ran into problems. This stuff is really thick, and has a lot of red pigment in it, so you need to be very careful about staining; on your clothes, your hands, your equipment, and your work area, as well as overspray on anything surrounding your mulch. Touchy stuff. Start by choosing a work surface that's easily washable, like on the grass. And be prepared to immediately rinse off your tools and gloves if you need to. I used a small pump sprayer, and mixed up just a half a gallon to start. Even at only 2 oz per half gallon, this stuff comes out really red. Once it dries, it looks about right, not too red. Be very careful of overspray, and be aware the color is just on the top surface of your mulch, so if you rake it afterwards, you will have to do some touch-ups. Other than having to be so careful in using this product, it does do a pretty nice job, your mulch ends up looking like brand new.

I have placed mulching around all my trees and crepe myrtles . I used cedar mulch and over time the natural red color turns more brown so I have opted to try the red mulch dye by Colorback. The dye when applied look great, I used a two gallon garden sprayer and followed the mixing instructions on the container and found the results were great. It looks great and I recommend this product.

I have red mulch in my tomato and pepper garden and by mid-summer the red color was very pale and blanched from the UV rays of the sun. My garden is in my front yard beside my deck so I want it look good. I mixed 4 ounces of this stuff with 1 gallon of water and sprayed the mulch and it looks like new. Actually it looks better and redder than new! (I have attached before and after pics.) The substance is thick so getting it all out of the measuring cup took a little rinsing and I got some of the dye splattered on my cloths but it is water based so it should wash out. I suggest wearing old cloths just in case. I sprayed it on the old mulch with my pump sprayer and my garden looks great! It is much easier, cheaper, and better results than replacing the mulch. Still plenty left in the container so this product will go a long way!

I ordered the "1/2 Gal. Red Mulch Color Covering up to 6400 sq. ft.", because I thought it was a great idea and it would save me money and time. The idea of replenishing the mulch every six month or so will be a thing of the past. So far I like the results after just one application. I am looking forward to a six month of bright red colored mulch and also, to see if the mulch itself gets some protection from the weather and last longer. We like it and we recommend it. Overall, this mulch colorant works, but it's not something I would use again. Instead of a stain, it's more of a paint. It dries quickly which is a plus for ground application. If you own pets or kids that will play in the mulch, they will disturb it and then you have an area of old looking stuff scattering over the newer looking stuff. My issue is with the application and clean-up. At first it sprayed fine with the suggested mixing ratio. After a short while I found myself having to thin it more and more to get it to try to spray. Because it dries fast it will literally dry in your sprayer while spraying it. After I finished spraying, I spent an hour taking my entire sprayer apart and cleaning it out with hot soapy water. My inline filter of my spray handle was completely plugged with dried red coloring. My advice for anyone using this product is mix it extremely thin and use an older or cheap sprayer you're not too worried about messing up. But because any disturbance to the chips also makes them look old again, I would honestly just put down new chips.

This mulch colorant is concentrated. To mix, simply mix 4oz. colorant with 1 gallon of water for a total of 16 gallons. 16 gallons covers up to 6,400 Sq. Ft. I used a 1-gallon hand sprayer and simply added the 4oz mix and filled with water. Manufacture suggests only mixing amount needed for application and not storing mixed product. Applying to mulch couldn’t be much easier. Coverage was good and I think the finished results look good. Time will tell how long it lasts. I have attached a picture of before and after I sprayed 1-year old red mulch.

Get the rubber gloves out! This coloring product will stain your hands and clothes if you aren't careful. The mixture is easily dissolved in mixing bottle. I used a high power spray bottle. One found at Home Depot. My application was one flower bed, but if you are going to use on a bigger area I would buy a mixing bottle that can attach to a hose for easier application. After spraying on the diluted color mixer, I then raked the top of the mulch, applied a second coat and then watered down so that it didn't stain my brick, siding or flowers. The color does hold true, especially when applying a second coat.

COLORBACK 1/2 Gal. Red Mulch Color will make 16 gallons of colorant using 4oz per gallon. I have only one small area that uses mulch and it's next to the house. I did use a pump up sprayer and set the nozzle to a heavy mist at first just using water in the sprayer and then added the colorant and that kept me from getting messy. I used also used a piece of cardboard as a shield to protect wall from the color and used only two gallons on the small area. You just spray the mulch. No magic needed. The mulch dried before the rain started about 8 hours later and the color did not run. The mulch looked great, this is a wonderful idea and it's a lot quicker that handling bags of mulch and the sprayer cleanup was quick and easy, I just did it as soon as I finished and used some dish soap. I had to tear the ground up the next morning over a rooted pipe, I have plenty of color left. I wonder if this would work on rubber mulch as well. This did an excellent job. They even have color for grass too and idnkt.
