If I use this on a 110 volt circuit, will it work and will the wattage be reduced by half ?

If I use this on a 110 volt circuit, will it work and will the wattage be reduced by half ?
Asked by: bobz
I believe the answer you received is incorrect. This heater has a single element which means there is one resistive circuit. It has a fixed ohms value of 12.8 ohms (volts squared divided by watts = ohms). When operated on 120V the output will drop to 25% of the rated 4500 watts. You can check this by using ohms law: http://www.ohmslawcalculator.com/ohms-law-calculator

You should always refer to the plate on the outside of your water heater to determine the correct wattage and voltage to be used for replacement, or contact the manufacturer of the water heater directly. You should never use an element with a higher wattage and voltage than recommended by the manufacturer. This appears to be a unit that operates with a single element at 120V, so the 4500W 240V element mentioned below should NOT be used as a replacement. Below is a link to the service manual for this unit that I found on the manufacturer’s website. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/59819/Ge-Ap12169-5.html#product-GE20P06SAG

will this heating element with fold back design increase recovery time .compared to a standard 4500 watt element ,due to the it having almost twice as much surface area in contact with water
Asked by: lance4
No, it recovers in the same amount of time, reason for the fold back is that it is lower watt element it does not burn as hot as the regular 4500 element. The fold back is designed to burn at a lower watt density so not to attract the sand and lime in the water.
