Questions & Answers

can i hook this up to quick connect hose to propane tank?

I have my propane grill on a large 60gal propane tank with a quick connect hose. can I hook this up to the line? would be nice to have unlimited propane for long smokes.
Asked by: sauceman35
It has a fitting that screws on to a propane bottle, just like a LP gas grille. I don't know why you would need a quick-connect fitting. To me they have always been more prone to leakage. But, it's your smoker, do what you want. I do keep a 2nd spare bottle of propane that I use for the grill or the smoker, so I always have enough propane to finish whatever I am cooking/smoking. I would hate to find myself out of fuel, when something is only half done, with the cooking/smoking process. I like this smoker because it was reasonably priced, does a good job and I can carry it by myself to put it back in storage when I am done using it. I have done 2 turkeys in it, spatch-cocked, and they have been wonderful. Moist, smokey, so good ! At Thanksgiving- the smoked turkey goes first. So, this year I will try doing some ahead of time and then just warm them in the oven. Also then I can have "to go" containers packed for those that traveled and are heading back home after dinner. Think how that will simplify a lot of the day and clean up. I will still smoke one or two on the big day-so the men can sit around the smoker, toss back a few and enjoy the holiday. Oh- also get your self a two temperature probe, one to monitor the temp inside the smoker and one for the bird in an internal area, usually by the thigh joint. And experiment with your wood choices and seasoning.

The racks, water pan, wood pan and grease pan at bottom of smoker all come out for easy cleaning. I use pressure washer (small electric pressure washer) and wire scrub brush to clean everything. Seems pretty easy.

Can you convert this smoker to natural gas
Asked by: Judy
Yes, but drill out the orifice to a #52 drill which is .0635" diameter. Camp chef instructions say to drill out to a #51 drill, which is .067" diameter. This turned out to be to large and when I called Camp Chef they told me it should be a .0635" diameter.

I read about the leakage from the door and the bad thermometer. How/what materials are you using for the defect? Also, is the thermometer put in the same location as the one that comes with the unit? If not, where are you placing the digital thermometers? Thanks
Asked by: Ross
It leaked a bit but can be sealed using a roll of Nomex gasket. My probes we running through the damper at first, but I've modded it to run through openings made using some of these: http://www.homedepot.com/p/1-2-in-Service-Entrance-SE-Water-tight-Conduit-Connector-90661/100170032 If you search you'll find some feedback and solutions...

The Camp chef instructions tell you to drill the orifice out with a #51 drill (which is .067"). After doing this, my smoker would not reach a lower temp as fire would go out when dial was at medium heat. When I called Camp chef, they said my orifice was too large (not sure how they would know, LOL!) and that I should have drilled it out with a .0635" diameter (or a #52 drill). Camp chef said they would send me a new orifice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Smoker Came with bad regulator, called Camp Chef, had replacement in 3 days. Works good now. Too heavy for one person to move easily, so put 4" casters on legs. Works great. Bought one for my son several years ago, he uses it regularly and loves it. Looking forward to many great smokeouts with mine. 4 stars only because regulator was DOA upon receipt. Great smoker.

I did not want an offset smoker as I do not normally have the time to tend to one so I picked a propane smoker. I did research on them for a great deal of time and picked this one as being the one I wanted. I couldn't be happier. I have smoked 4 briskets, 6 pork butts, chicken, a turkey and a couple of hams. All have turned out excellent. It is fairly easy to assemble, holds a nice consistent temp and provides plenty of smoke. Everyone that has had any of the meat says it is really good. I like my smoker and recommend it to everyone. An added bonus is it is very efficient with propane, being able to run for over 60 hours on a single 15 lb propane tank.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value So far it's good with a few uses. The materials appear to be good quality. It was easy to setup. It's heavy, but one person can move it a few feet slowly. It has good temp control and ventilation the control. It smokes well and evenly cooks meat. There's plenty of space, you could do a big turkey or probably 12 racks of ribs. Overall it's a good value, not all the bells and whistles but works like it should for a fair price.

Runs a little hotter than I had hoped - very difficult to run under 200 F. Camp Chef customer service is very professional and service oriented. The burner that came with the unit was not right, they sent out a new burner immediately that worked perfectly. I am happy with this purchase and would recommend for most smoked foods that do not require very low temps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great affordable smoker! Great vertical smoker that has a large capacity. I recommend buying a rib rack if you're interested in smoking a lot (can handle up to 6 racks), adhesive gasket to seal in the smoke and buying a separate thermometer (Thermopro) that measures the temperature of the meat and the smoker. Our first tri tip was a success! Can't wait to try smoking more meat.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smoke Vault not quite a lock Overall performance is ok, but unit does lose a lot of smoke thru the door. Also, the vents only close about half way so you don't maintain a good heavy smoke in the box. Unit arrived with a dented in lower rear corner. Did not want deal with hassle of returning, so I pounded it out a bit and made it work.
