What is the recommende temp for the oven when recdharging the Silica Gel Dehumidifier?

How long does it take before it needs recharging for you in a very wet climate area?

I realize that would depend on the exact location but since sometimes I am away for months I am concerned. If it needs recharged before I get back then I may have to get the electric type or both. Thanks..

Just some quick rounded math to shed some light on this. The specs say that this product weighs 1.8 lbs. So if it contains roughly 1.5 pounds of silica gel then it's water capacity at 50% relative humidity is in the neighborhood of only about 5 ounces. That's just over 1/2 cup of water give or take. For comparison it's is quite common for a proper dehumidifier to pull over a gallon of water from the air of a basement every single day. Conclusion: If you put one of these in your basement and then recharge it every 8 weeks. There is a really good chance you are not lowering the humidity in your basement by any measurable %. There are several things to consider here. One of the most important being silica gel is not very fast, so even if it takes weeks for this item to reach it's capacity the moisture going into your basement is likely much faster then this can take it out. Otherwise you would be looking at putting 32 of these cans in your basement and recharging them every single day. :) hope this helps someone to avoid wasting time or money. Note that I'm not bashing this product, it's limitations makes it perfect for use in closed spaces like a gun safe. This is assuming you don't open the gun safe every single day letting more moisture in. Remember silica gel is SLOW. It's only effective if the situation allows the silica gel to slowly pull moisture out of a space and then maintain that lower humidity without constant ingress like you typically have in a basement.

Can this be used in a regular closet that collects moisture? Or is it just for safes?

Asked by: Jess
Most likely it will not be adequate for a closet. It depends on how quickly moisture ingresses into the closet. If you did want to try it and see, the best way to proceed would be to get a humidity measuring device for about 5 bucks and put it in the closet to watch for a few days to verify that this device is actually lowering the humidity. If the closet door gets opened frequently you will mostly likely find that this can will need charged without really lowering the humidity in the closet. But if you seal around the door as much as reasonable to prevent air exchange and the door remains closed, you might have some success.

Seems to be working just fine for the 30 days or so I've had it in my 55 x 15.8 x 15.1 safe. Before I put can in I used safe to store a few small cardboard boxes and they had moisture and became soft in about 10 days. Everything has remained dry and moisture free since putting can in.Very satisfied with product. Just want to see how it holds up and reacts after putting it in oven to dry out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not work for me The Cannon-Silica-Gel-Dehumidifier-Ideal-for-Safes- arrived with some of the pellets loose in the box, and in dusty condition. Perhaps the one I received had been previously returned, but I did not think it would make a difference in the product's performance. I set it up for several humid days inside a closed cabinet, with hygrometers both inside the cabinet and in the surrounding room. Unfortunately, there was no difference in the readings inside vs outside of the cabinet. Perhaps it requires a more safe-like surrounding? For whatever reason, it did not work for me., so I will be returning it

I put this Cannon Silca in there with it and no moisture problems. It has lengthened out the time for recharging weeks longer than before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional & Gets the Job Done These are a great investment, and work well in safes. You can also use them in closets and other areas. They save money in the long run, as unlike things like Damp Rid, where you throw them away once they have absorbed moisture, these you just put in the oven for 3-4 hours and they 'recharge'. The silica beads are blue when fresh, and turn pink when they need to be dried out. Simple, easy, and effective. Worthwhile investment. I prefer these to the electric dehumidifying rods. While these are great for protecting weapons, I also use them in a safe with backup hard drives, cameras, and electronics, and also in closets to protect things like high end purses and belts from moisture. I live in the humidity capitol of the nation, and have been happy with this product.
