Q:Which product (Type 1 or 2) should I use?.. and additional suggestions. My stairs are 1 1/8 thick, but the bullnose only come out just over 1/2 past current risers. The risers are damaged, so I need to cover them.

A:  Great question---I would suggest using the type 2 (square) this one is the larger one and should work for you.

Q:The top step tred cap is thicker than the vinyl flooring. We don't want to use a transition piece. We plan to use a router on the sub flooring to sink the tred cap in line with the vinyl tile. Will this work instead of using a transition piece?

      Answer This Question

A:  Amy, Thank you for your interest in Zamma Cap-A-Treads. These are not designed to be used directly against the flooring, as the flooring requires 3/16" - 1/4" spacing around the perimeter of the flooring for expansion. You will need to use either a stair nose between the edge of the stairs and the flooring or cap-a-tread with a transition piece. Best of luck with your stair project.

Q:Update instruction. When applying glue from a tube it causes air pockets between the tred cap and stair. Which causes the step to squeak when stepped on. We had to remove the tred cap and use glue with a trowel to cover the entire back of the tred cap.

        Answer This Question

A:  Amy, Thank you for your input. The instructions provided when followed, are accurate. Squeaking is usually caused by treads being cut too tight and/or not being allowed to dry properly. Glad you are satisfied with your cap-a-treads.

14 treads and 14 risers later I have completely transformed a carpeted stairwell in my home. The transition between the treads and matching LVL is seamless. Would have given 5 stars if the product offered more variations. It appears shipments are aligned to production runs. 13 of my 14 treads were the same pattern, but offset sufficiently so that with the right edge cuts it is hard for the untrained eye to notice it is the same. I ordered a 14th tread a couple weeks later and the pattern it came with was vastly different than the one included with the rest of the steps. I found this a little frustrating because its variation is sufficient to stand out from all the other treads. Ideally there should be more variations between production runs and shipments, the same pattern (offset as delivered) always used, or some options provided to the buyer regarding patterns to choose from. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. It took me (an average DIY'er) about 8 hours to individually measure, cut, and install the tread/riser system. A miter saw is critical. While your stairs may look straight they likely are not. On about 3/4 of my boards I had to do a 1/2 degree cut on the edge to ensure uniform placement. I also highly recommend usage of a finishing nail gun (I used 1 1/2" finishing nails) to secure the treads at the back of each step. 3 nails is all that is needed to ensure the tread remains secure as you work your way up the stair case. Make sure your nails are fully sunk and close enough to the existing riser so that the new riser covers them completely. Carbide tip finishing blades are also critical to a clean cut. Always cut with the finished portion of riser/tread at the outside tip of the blade.

If they would offer SAMPLES maybe that might save them shipping costs to the buyer, and back to the manufacturer. Color and wood grain patterns vary. To match existing floors is almost impossible!
