You can easily make your own from either CDX plywood, hardwood, or MDF. All you'll have to do it prime and paint. I had to do the same thing.

I believe they are custom ordered from a third party that will ship direct. That's how I got mine.

how do I order type 2 Cap A Tread online I only see only standard ?

Unfortunately, Alan, you will have to go into a store and order Type II through a flooring specialist. I just finished my entire staircase in Type II and that was the only way to do it. Get in touch with Zamma through their contact page (https://www.zamma.com/general-contact.html) and ask them for the special order part number of each different Type II item you need. It’s easiest to take those numbers to a flooring specialist at Home Depot and let them know the special order number and quantity you need. The flooring specialist at Home Depot will call Zamma to verify the order, but you getting in touch with them ahead of time helps eliminate potential errors along the way. Just a forewarning, Zamma is notoriously difficult to work with, and they might be very curt with you and the Home Depot specialist and their replies might be terribly insufficient. Do not give up! With enough persistence, they eventually pull through. Today, I have a lovely staircase!

Well you could certainly buy the boards and paint them, as you say, but don’t forget the paint cost and labor. These boards have a white laminate surface that you don’t ever need to paint. I’ve had them in my house for about three years now and they’ve held up good.

Is it water resistant?

Asked by BobTBldr July 28, 2018

Will to answer your question we would have to look at how it's made, it is a made of hard wood and covered with a thin layer of white sheeting. So the top white sheeting is water resistant, but if you were to allow water along the edges or on the back side it would soak in and over time it would decay the wood. One of the ways to help make sure that doesn't happen is to use white caulking around the edges and in any cracks.

Is it flexible for a curved step?

I would say no. There is very minor flex but I'm not sure how it would be over time.

Use White Caulking that's all you need, for a little more money you could use a wood pudding filler.

We were remodeling the whole upstairs, so we ordered new cap treads and were painting the risers after seeing and painting them we decided to get new risers. We ordered them and they actually arrived first. As you can see I was adding decals to the steps to spice up. They turned out so good. Thank you Home Depot, I now love my new steps.

Cap A Tread White 47 in. Long x 1/2 in. Deep x 7-3/8 in. Height paired nicely with new stair tread. Only con is the cost but, not having to paint and being scuff resistant was worth the trade off. Looks clean and easy to install.

Riser paint side chips
not recommended .riser chips easy even with a new 60 tooth blade on sliding miter saw. since its not real wood (MDF) you have to use oil base primer to paint sides if needed on open side, which can be alot of work since treads and riser are glued down with industrial grade adhesives. water based application will make the product expand and may have to be removed. You can buy pine risers for about half the price, you would paint and primer. still would be cheaper and more durable.

These are nothing more than white melamine. Problem is white melamine is better and cheaper. This product chips out way to much and that's a 60 tpi blade on a chop saw and 48 tpi on a worm drive table saw. Not worth the ridiculously high cost. In fairness, I have not tried the laminate version, they mat be better.
