I need old boxes for a granite backsplash. Does anyone know what the max thickness of the material can be? In other words, how far back do the wings extend. I believe granite is 3cm thick (1.18 in)
Asked by: Carlos
1 inch.. You could probably extend that a little by replacing the screws with longer screws

Can this box be installed horizontally?

Can this box be installed horizontally?
Asked by: MK
Yes, this box can be installed both vertically or horizontally. You do not need to screw it to any, that would also void UL and all warranty.

I hear that you can only put 1 cable (romex) per box, is this correct?

Asked by: BossMan
No. There are four cable input openings, two on top and two at the bottom.

I use these boxes for everything from adding outlets in finished walls, to adding outlets in kitchen islands. These electrical boxes are really sturdy and give the installer a lot of options for application and installation. They meet my expectations and I will continue to buy these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best box for drywall For any DIYers out there that have drywall in their homes, I highly recommend that you have a few of these boxes on hand. Installing an electrical box after the drywall is already up can be challenging, but this box helps to take away some of the difficulty. You have the freedom to install this box anywhere on the wall, rather than only next to a stud. There is no need to nail anything into place and this box, when tightened, holds securely to the wall. This box works great for retrofitting your home for wall mount televisions, installing additional light switches, adding outlets in places like the garage, and many other potential uses.

Like others have said don't place next to a stud as the wing tabs can't swing out and hold the electrical box in place as intended. Don't go all gorrilla on the screws. Those plastic tabs will strip out. Just snug it down and wiggle the outlet to make sure it is secure. Make sure the hole is cut straight and your installation will be less difficult to get the unit aligned. Using a bit of soap on the threads will help but I found running the screw in and out free's up the tabs and allows them to swing out into position much easier. Cordless screwdriver users beware, you will strip the tabs quickly if you're not paying close attention! Dry fit one and secure it to get a feel for the right tightness. They are easy to remove too.

One problem with this box is that the swing bracket screw requires so much torque to get it moving initially that it's very easy to break the dry wall. I found this out the hard way. The remedy is to get the screw started before you insert the box into cavity. One done, the box works well, but I've never had this problem with other boxes, and it's something the manufacturer could easily fix. Hence I'm giving this 2 stars as I'm betting I won't be the only one to hit this problem where a simple DIY job becomes a much more complicated one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect sized box for times or many junction connections Simple to use, just cut a hole in the wall, fasten using upper and lower wing screws, and your done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good retrofit box Retrofit old work box. The extra depth makes wiring a little easier when using 12/2 awg. I found that I had to screw the tabs in a little before putting in the wall or the tabs won't start turning correctly. They're made with just two tabs (one on top and one on bottom). Wish they had four tabs on them like the 3 gang boxes. They squeak a little when tightened to the drywall. Overall a great retrofit product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these boxes Over the years I've used hundreds of these. They're inexpensive and once installed they're rock solid. These require 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 studded walls. For 2 x 3 studded walls use the 14 CU, IN. shallow box.
