Almost a 50% price increase since last year. Why are the Carlon boxes so scarce now?

Asked by DIYGuy May 11, 2021

Answer

Everything is in short supply now. Check out wood, steel, copper prices lately. While bunch of issues with the supply chain and tons of demand with everyone building houses and doing renos because they were quarantined. Plus manufacturing took a dip during a good part of the pandemic.

I see knock out on the back? Could it be used to secure MC cable?

Asked by Joosoof February 13, 2021
1
Answer

I don’t think I’ve seen MC cable thin enough to fit in the knockout tabs provided. There may also be code issues with terminating in a plastic outlet box rather than a metal one.

Can I connect Armolite (metal) cable to this box?

Asked by JC August 2, 2020

It is not intended for that use as it doesn't have round knock outs for the clamps to be inserted.

Updating my 1940's home
I decided to add some outlets and light switches. These old work Carlon boxes were the boxes I decided on. I had to use these because my old home has 1/2 drywall" with about 5/8" plaster on top. The ability to position the fasteners at the length/ depth needed was a simple but genius solution. Plenty of room to work with to move wire in place.

I needed to move a pair of light switches a few inches as we were tiling a wall and they would have been halfway on the tile and halfway off. It was a relatively easy job - hardest part was trying to release the wires from the switches (you need a tiny screw driver to poke through the hole that releases the grip on the wires, only one I could find small enough for intended for eye glasses). I deliberately cut the hole in the wall a little small and then trimmed with a knife so the box fitted snugly and then mechanism to clamp it to the drywall worked perfectly first time of trying.

Pretty sturdy box and the tabs to secure the box work pretty well, but my box was not square (I didn't choose the box myself. I ordered it online and did curbside pickup.). I had to adjust the plugs a little bit to get the trim plate level, but it worked out fine.
