A:Â You can drill a hole in the back of the box. Then use the proper conduit/male connector. There will be plenty of room in the box for the splice.

A:Â The questions you are asking (including the one below) are best answered by referring to the NEC. There are too many variables to expect someone to give you the correct answer (especially if they are not electricians like me :) ).

We added 3 and 4-way switches and dimmers to our bedroom to make is possible to control the lighting and ceiling fan from either side of our bed in addition to the controls by the doorway. That required a total of nine 3-conductor #14 AWG cables; far too many for the conventional junction boxes available. This box filled the bill. I'm sure a 6"x6" would have worked, but this is big enough to make changes and/or additions easily. The mounting tabs are detachable, and allow you to rotate them 90° at the corners, or attach them to the middle of the sides, so finding a way to mount it, is very easy. The lid is sealed with a gasket and eight screws, making it capable of being water-tight as long as the fittings used are sealed. I didn't need that feature, but it's sturdy construction did lead to one problem, which I won't deduct from the rating, because most folks will use this with conduit rather than NM cables, as I did.. The wall thickness is more than most cable clamps can accommodate. I tried five different types of cable clamps without success AFTER I'd bored nine 7/8" holes in the box with a hole saw. My final solution was to use Male Terminal Adapters at each hole location. I then used PVC cement to glue in a PVC cable clamp. It was a snug fit without the glue and permanently welded once they were glued together. They're in the attic so don't have to be weathertight, but NM isn't suitable for outdoor use anyway. It isn't cheap, but was the nearly perfect solution.
