The thickness of the actual Box Extender is .125 in.

Do these have a cubic inch listed on them ... i.e. do they add to the fill capacity of the box?

Asked by Wondering November 12, 2017

Answers

Because they are adjustable, depending on the distance from edge face of existing box to face of wall covering, there is no specific amount of space they add for "box fill." Extenders do add space / fill capacity to existing boxes but you will have to measure, convert to cubic inches and then determine from Code requirements (for wire, clamps, receptacles, etc.) what is allowed in the box. Overfilling electrical boxes (shoving in as much as possible) is a problem and a hazard.

Fit great and did what is supposed to do. I have never been disappointed with Carlon products...but buy longer screws.
I am glad these were in stock as I wanted to finish this project. I added three sets of these to three double gang receptacle boxes after a remodel. I had added some 1/2 thick wood over existing drywall. These boxes assembled as instructed and fit perfectly. After reading a previous reviewers complaint of screws being too short, I did buy, at Home Depot, a $10 assortment box of various length screws made for electrical boxes. I needed longer screws than what was included. The included screws may be fine for thinner material. So it cost another $10 but I have extra screws I'll use in the future for other electrical projects.

The customary gang box extenion rings were an affordable, elegant solution that electricians used for years. This ridiculous replacement must have been the brainchild of a junior designer and junior product manager. It is a blatant effort to make $3 instead of $1 from naive DIYers. Home Depot is an accomplice as they no longer stock the former in stores. The product is fundamentally flawed. When halved for a single receptacle gang box the extender can't be centered because of its tabs. More importantly, the extender won't accommodate a bulky GFCI-sized receptacle without rubbing the wire contacts! See photo.

Short Screws make the extender worthless
It's a good thing I happened to have two 1 3/4" screws laying around to complete my job. I don't know what job could possibly be completed with the shor 1 1/4" stcrews Carlon supplies, only 1/4" longer than the screws the original outlet came with.

A very robust box extender that only fits larger boxes. If you have an old steel box or smaller PVC box this may not fit. The interconnectivity provides a very stable extension when used in a multi-gang box.
