It shouldn't...If you are outside of the cable spool and bearing (and where the spring clamps to the bar), that part of the bar serves no purpose, except for this type of opener to mount/drive.

Yes it should. I would print out the pre-purchase check list and give it to your door installer. They will then know your intentions to use this opener and can insure that the door they supply and install is compatible.

Yes that is a possibility. That's why its important to check the balance of the door on a regular basis. Keep the door maintained and replace the torsion springs when they are near the end of their service life and before they break.

Asked by bob May 13, 2020

Answer

No, this model and all current Chamberlain openers use serial switches. In the case of this opener the one wall control requires all of the available power from the logic board to operate. You can't add a second switch. If you need another switch somewhere consider using another visor remote or keychain remote.

Pros and cons
I'll start with one of the things I dislike... This opener has a feature which makes sense from an engineering point of view, but it will take a toll. What they did is implement a braking sequence in both directions; when you lift the door it will brake (slow down before coming to a complete stop) and when you close the garage door it will slow down about 1.5 ft before it comes to a stop. That is fine, but in this braking sequence it's loud. Overall it's as loud as the loudest sequence in operation and that is loud. My second dislike is in regards to the single remote it comes with... At this price-point it should be better fitted. My third dislike is the cheap look and I mean looking from a very common angle; in my opinion it needs a bottom cover for all the wires which can't be routed any way differently. Besides these things, it's not bad. What I like about it: First and foremost, it gives a clean look to the garage sealing. Now I will be able to do a great paint-job, which I always postponed because of the traditional opener. I like the wall-mounted remote and the light always on feature with the motion sensor. I like the lock, but it could be silent instead of doing that noise (this should be as well go to my dislikes). I like the fact that it is Ethernet wired instead of WiFi. I know that some customers complained about it, but the fact is that in almost any scenario, the garage door is a less WiFi covered spot in anyone's home. The Ethernet hub (adapter) does not have to be in the proximity of the opener, but rather the wall mounted button, which is very discrete to achieve and there will be no frequency distress if Mal-intent is present. I had smart implementation on my ancient Genie before this opener due to smart plug implementation, so no big deal (for me) with the app and voice command. It works and I hope that the brand is strong and the product will last. Do I recommend it? I generally don't do recommendations because it fires back in an unwanted manner... It can be placed even in a narrow spot and besides that it's typical as far as requirements for pre-existing equipment - nothing special...

Purchased this garage door opener for my pole barn to open an insulated 12-foot wide by 10-foot in height. I was uncertain on how wall mounted garage door open would perform. This was so unique and unlike any other opener I have even seen, I just had to try it. I ended up mounting the opener on the right side of the garage door. The instructions well written and greatly illustrated making it simple to follow. Everything was very well packaged and labeled as you can see in the attached photo. This was a new install so the whole process took over three and a half hours for me to complete. I had to install a new electrical outlet and I spent a lot of time ensuring all the wires were hidden as much as possible. This was relatively easy to install. I did make sure the opener was perfectly level and I think this paid off in the end. There is very little movement “wobble” opening or closing the door. I really think the opener is quieter than manually opening the garage door myself. I was so impressed with this Chamberlain opener I just purchased a second unit for my other door. I would recommend this product.

Quiet, works well. Installed myself. Gave me an error signal when I first started it, then realized I needed to move the cable tension sensor a little higher because the door touched it as it moved. We really like it. Looks fantastic...no ceiling hardware.

This garage door open is a MAJOR space saver. I have only had it for two weeks, but I'm loving it. I do recommend you have another person help you with installation. love it very much. There are a LOT of features on this opener. It's very smart. I have been playing with it like a kid in a candy store. Please be advised, to make sure you follow the warning of, not opening the garage door more than 10 times in one hour. It will make the opener hot and can possibly cause damage to the opener. Overall, I highly recommend this garage opener.

Just bought the second unit for my pole barn. Added the second opener easily to the MyQ Ap. with the first door on it. These units are great for facilities with minimal opening/closings. I installed these on 12'2" wide x 14' high doors Easy installation (2-3) hours for an amateur like me.

Customer review from Chamberlain-DIY.com logo
After receiving the garage door opener, I was surprised how small the box was and my initial thought was "how in the world is a garage door opener in this small of a box". I called a local garage door company to install the product for me. The installer showed up and commented on how great this opener was and how happy I would be with it. The kit comes complete with everything needed to get the job done. The opener is very small and compact. It mounts directly to the wall right next to the door spring operator. The opener connects directly to the door operator rod thereby eliminating chains, tracks, and or belts. There are so many less parts to go wrong with this new design. The opener is very quite compared to older, chain driven operators. It is even quieter than my belt driven one I have for my other door. The gateway connects easily to the home router allowing you to download the app and control the door from a smart phone in addition to the remotes and keypads. One very cool feature of this opener is the fact it has an automatic lock that locks the door once it is completely shut. It has a deadbolt that goes through the door tack and locks the door in the down position. When you click the button to open, the door automatically unlocks and then the door begins to open. I am very happy with this opener and would highly recommend this to anyone in the market for a new opener. The convenient wall mount makes it a much cleaner and less bulky piece of equipment. (What's this)
I really wanted to like this garage door opener, but if you have a metal garage door and a stucco (metal lathe) house, plan for some range issues. It is a really nice and quiet unit about 1/3 the sound of our prior Liftmaster unit (Chamberlain and Liftmaster are the same company), but the antenna range with myQ/security 2+ is terrible out of the box in our house. The included remote needed to be less than 29” from the outside of the door for it to open. My car’s homelink was 16” or less from the door (yes I measured). I called Chamberlain and they sent me an antenna kit which added to the range some. If I was 20’ or less from the antenna (either outside the garage or above the garage in a glass window), the included remote worked. My car’s homelink (a 2017 model) still would not work unless the car was 3’ from the garage door. Called support again and they said I had to physically remove the LED light bulbs from our outside lights – did that and no change. Also tried removing the red wires from the main unit to see if there was a problem in the remote wiring – also no change. Finally shut off the circuit to the garage and ran an extension cord from the main house – also no change. The next step was to shut off the entire house except the garage to look for interference problems - I didn’t do that as the other garage door opener – works fine in the same house (see below). If a device is SO sensitive to modern house electronics and LED bulbs, I think it is not wise to ask ALL homeowners to rid their houses of electronics and LEDs. This problem will only get worse. In comparison, our prior liftmaster (before MyQ – had the purple antenna so not that old) works from over 50’ away from the car and remote without needing any special extension antenna run outside the house. I actually powered it back up to make sure nothing had changed and it still worked great. Guess the new tri-band myQ security is lower powered to prevent others from hacking your system. Sadly, the homeowner suffers. Sadly, metal garage house with stucco suffer even worse. We will keep the unit as it wonderfully quiet and my daughter’s bedroom is over the garage. The internet features are nice for alerts on leaving the door open. A bit mystified why Chamberlain wants $10 a year EACH to connect IFTTT and Google. Amazon Alexa is not a listed partner – hope that happens soon and is one of the free partners. Maybe the next generation MyQ will do better with modern houses and electronics. Or maybe I just have a dud main unit/antenna setup – but for now, it is what it is.

(What's this)
I was looking to replace my old clunky rail-type opener with a Liftmaster 8500. This Chamberlain model is mechanically the same thing, but it has all the 'extras.' It will work on pretty much any residential door with a torsion spring; my door is about 10 years old. Installation can be easy if your garage is mostly clear (i.e. empty) and you can reach everything. It took me longer because mine is crowded, but it is definitely not complicated. Most of the work is running the wires. The main unit literally took 10 minutes to install; it uses a single bracket with 2 screws. The rest of it - the sensors, lock, etc. - total time was a few hours. You can benefit from a step drill or rotabroach (annular drill) when making holes in the rails, but it's not absolutely necessary. The opener is well built, with a 14 gauge steel body and back plate. The only plastic is the front cover. The drive motor is small and quiet, it uses a 63:1 gear to give 255 in-lbs of torque. Power goes through a dog clutch via a short bicycle-type chain. The main shaft is .125 wall steel tube supported with substainial brass bushings. In short, it's well built with lots of lifting power. Aside from the overhead space saving (which is awesome), the big advantage - it's QUIET. Basically 95% of the noise now comes from the door itself - the rollers, hinges, etc. It actually motivated me to align my door, lube the hinges and replace the rollers. Now it's super quiet from inside, and almost silent from the driveway. It is a bit slower, I would say it takes about 2 - 3 seconds longer to open and close, but that is fine with me. It has a soft start on both open and close, so when you hit the button there's no clunk, but instead a smooth ramp-up in motor speed and smooth action. The lock uses a 1/2" solid steel pin that is more than long enough to secure the door. You need the lock because this type of opener can not push the door down - which means it can not hold it closed. The lock is probably the loudest part, it makes a solid "thunk" after the door closes (it's a reassuring sound). The lock has a lever that allows you to manually operate it. The optional light is wireless. Just plug it into an outlet and mount it anywhere. By default it stays on for about 4 minutes, and also if you walk through the safety beam while the door is open, the light comes on. The control panel has a motion sensor that activates the light on the same timer; it works great for automatic light when entering the side garage door. There's also a manual Light switch in case you just want to turn on the light without a timer. This model includes internet control. A small device is included that connects to your home internet. You can use the MyQ app on your phone to access the opener. The biggest features are the ability to open/close the door from anywhere, and to monitor the door status. I put a small webcam in the garage so that I can actually see the door. The internet feature is not required, so if you do not want to use it, you simply don't install any of the components. All the controls do rely on the main wired control panel though, so that piece HAS to be connected. In other words, you can't just use the remote, or just use the internet. The wires are solid copper and very thin, be careful not to staple through them, kink them, or run next to any other electrical wires or you can run into problems. I have no complaints about this opener. It works great, has features that make sense, and it seems well built.

(What's this)
A new world of garage door openers. Smooth, quiet and very high tech. When the door goes up it moves very smooth and just before the top it slows down then stops, no jerking no banging then when it goes down same story, nice, but when it stops there is a light click, the auto door lock secures the door. The remote light can be installed anywhere there is an electrical outlet no other wiring necessary. The control panel has only 2 wires from the motor unit, very easy to install I only had a problem with the the cable tension safety sensor. First I could not install it where the instructions said it should go and after installing it I had a problem with the adjustments, which I finally overcame with a 50 cent spring. After all said and done, I absolutely love this door opener, it's operation is really impressive, and with the programing through the computer I can go to Paris and close my garage door from the top of the Eiffel Tower.
