Questions & Answers

The recoil doesnt recoil back up anymore

One pull is all I get. The cord will not recoil. If (rarely) it doesnt start in one pull, I have to take off the casing, coil it back up, put the casing back on and try again. Kind of bothersome during inclement weather/power outage, especially in the dark. Can I fix or replace the recoil thingy so it will work again? other than this, I absolutely LOVE this generator. usually one pull is all I need, and she blazes on for me. But, I would be better if the recoil worked. I have the 6800 - 41135

What is the THD on this unit?

I am looking for the best buy for my money. Searching for a generator for my RV that will not only handle the load, but one that is cleaner power than standard. I see that this unit has Auto Voltage regulator, but I'm curious of the THD rating. Why does Champion not advertise this number...is it because it's not a good number? I want to protect my appliances and devices to the best my dollar will buy. Since I don't have a lot of those $$'s...it's very important to me to get the best value.
Asked by: Chris
Your answer is not satisfactory...and I warn anyone reading this to do some research. It is known in the Electronics world that if you have over 5-6% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) that you can damage any electronics with a mircro-processor. Yes, you can probably get away with it...but do yourself a favor and do some research before buying. There are other relatively in-expensive generators who claim that they produce less than 5-6%. I'm sorry Mr. Champion, but that's the truth...and I feel more confident now that I won't buy your products. If you had something producing the lower range numbers, I'd consider it...until you tried to tell me that it was okay to use a 20% distortion rated gen on any general home electronics. Are you going to buy me a new laptop when it burns up because of dirty power? Didn't think so!

5,500-Watt/6,800-Watt Recoil Start Gasoline Powered Portable Generator is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised! I would have paid for a "better" named generator, but Champion is all they had in the store post Sandy. I was pleasantly surprised how well this unit has been working. It saved me from the cold nights. I have it wired to my circuit board. It powers my LCD tv, lights, computer, garage door opener, refrigerator and most importantly my oil fired furnace without a hitch. This unit has exceeded my expectations. Oh...I forgot, it ran overnight and it only used a half tank of gas!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far, so good. - Sandy victim Bought one for myself and one for the in-laws. Real simple to use if you have common sense. Started right up after 2 pulls. Was able to power the frige, stove, a lamp and a LED tv. I unplug the stove and the tv when I wanted to use the washing machine/dryer. So far, so good. I'll repost if there's anything negative.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What a surprise! I got it during Nemo, was the only one I could find, we lost power on Friday night and it ran till the power was restored on Sunday night, it powered my boiler, all my lights, 2 tvs, my freezer and a microwave, I used about 13 Gallons of Gasoline, and the only time I turned off, was on Saturday morning for the first oil change. I was greatly surprised on how reliable this Generator is, the price is great for the size (6800 starting watts), I would buy it again and its worth going for the bigger one. The reason I am not giving it 5 stars, its because this unit doesn't have a hour meter and its a bit on the louder side.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product delivers as promised We installed the transfer switch next to our main panel indoors and then tested the system with our Champion generator. The generator started on the first pull. We increased the load on the generator by turning on the auxiliary circuits. We loaded the generator with 4,000 watts total and it ran perfectly. It does run loud, but that has been reported before. I'm sure it will perform as stated should the need arise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for the price Finally found this at a Fairfield, CT store and was able to put it together and get it running within 10 minutes. Very easy quick-guide which made the setup easy. Saved me after Sandy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delivered by a tractor trailer so be prepared to go to the truck to unload the generator into you... Delivered by a tractor trailer so be prepared to go to the truck to unload the generator into your car or truck if it cannot get up your driveway. With no oil or gas in the generator it is easy to stand it on its end to attach the wheels. It requires metric tools or adjustable wrenches. You supply the oil and gas. 10W30 is recommended to break in the generator. I added fuel stabilizer to the gas since it may sit for a long time without use. On/off switch to on------fuel cut off to on-----choke all the way to the left------two pulls and it cranked------choke all the way to the right. Let it run a few minutes before plugging in extension cords. To cut off, unplug extension cords and turn the fuel cut off to the off position and let run dry and stop on its own so the carburetor stays dry and clean. Use good quality heavy duty wire extension cords. My generator is on my back deck under the kitchen window. I open the window, lay a 3 inch piece of foam rubber on window seal with a small slit cut half way through it, pass the extension cord through he window, press the cord into the slit, then close the window. Keeps the cold wind, noise and fumes out. They do not recommend running it in the rain so I have a table over the top of the generator to allow for ventilation for cooling and to protect from the rain. I roll it out---crank it---roll it back under the table.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good unit - time will tell I just recently bought this generator. I took a reasonable amount of time for shipment. I opened the box and it worked fine.
