Questions & Answers

Can i buy striping material longer than 12 feet my chimney is 22 feet in diameter brick

Asked by: walter
Go to a plumbing supply and buy some strapping for supporting pipes. I am not sure if it will be as thick as whatever the antenna mount comes with. In a good plumbing or industrial supply house you can also find copper strapping. It will hold up well, but tend to stretch with temperature changes. Both materials come in rolls of several feet. Whatever you use, you can always increase the length by bolting an additional length onto it. If there is a strength or durability question you can also double up thinner material and zinc prime and paint it.

How do I apply the strapping seals?

When applying the strapping seals, do I need any special tool? Or a simple pliers would do the trick.
Asked by: John
Installing the chimney support can be done by using no tools - BUT, it's so much easier with pliers and a thick neck screwdriver. The screwdriver with a long thick neck is just the thing for turning the twist adjustment bands. A picture of how to install and what these support bands should look like on your chimney is below. This installation requires a bit of patience. Just be very careful up on the roof and keep your attention span focused on the job at hand. The screws, washers and nuts should be tucked into a shirt pocket for easy griping when needed. Drop one of these tiny things and if your luck is like mine, they'll do a drum roll right into the gutters IF you're lucky. I dropped a nut and it bounced off the rim of my gutter and into a pile of leaves below.

In preparation for a new roof installation, I replaced an older, long rod, TV antenna with a new pair of antennas, designed for receiving the digital channels in use in my area. The Channel Master chimney provided excellent support for the mast, so I don't need guy wires for the time being, but I do plan to add them after the new roof is installed. The antennas are high enough to be out of the way of the roofers and are similar to those on this page. Note that this page is for San Diego and the antenna pointing will be different in other areas. http://www.cbs8.com/story/16380765/how-to-watch-kfmb-over-the-air

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job I had to puzzle over it for a few minutes to figure out how to use it; the strap goes though the triangular top of the bolt and you tighten the nut to cinch. One needs to be careful to pull the straps fairly tight by hand before you crimp them because there isn't that much adjustment length on the bolts. You will need sheet metal shears to cut the excess strap; my single-flue chimney needed barely half the supplied strapping. In the end, it was not as easy to install as a ratcheting type, but it is sturdy and does the job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy Install The kit contained all of the necessary parts with picture instructions. It was easy to install and easily accommodated a 1" diameter 10' metal pole and antenna. It appears to be sturdy. The instructions could have been more detailed about fastening the clips to the metal strap but it wasn't hard.

Easy to install but should have had lock washers or double nuts included to maintain tightness over time. But not a bid deal for me as 1/4"x20 hardware is something I keep stock in my shop.
