Asked by: Bill
Yes, though depending on the exact model, it would be best if not included, to get the optional auger for sand/salt applications.

I purchased this unit due to it's published description, "Steel powder coated parts, 12" pneumatic wheels , etc., etc.. Upon arrival I was certain I made the correct choice as I removed the parts from the box. Then I took out the "Assembly Directions" only to find one sheet (approx. 3' X4'), to large to work with comfortably, & printed on both sides. Only a partial parts list & parts shown that do not even belong on the unit I purchased, with NO COMMENTS in the directions to indicate which parts to use on your Model ? There were no washers to prevent nuts from tearing holes open, parts were missing & directions looked like a four year old made them up. I called customer service for a missing part and they seemed helpful, but ! they sent out the wrong part & I had to call again! Hope I get the correct part this time. I would recommend this Spreader to anyone that has some mechanical background, someone that can improvise & supply their own washers. The spreader seems to be made well , as described . Oh , good luck with the directions!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Spreader; Lousy instructions The spreader is good quality--the wheels are robust, which is a definite plus going uphill across St. Augustine grass. HD has cleared-up the issue on its website of whether this spreader arrives assembled--it does not, unlike its salt spreader cousins. Assembly takes nearly 2 hours, not the laughable 20-40 minutes the manufacturer claims--maybe if you are a 'superhero' like the Flash and you have put together 3 broadcast spreaders recently, then maybe it might take only 20 minutes for assembly, but plan on 2 hours if you are an average person working solo. The printed instructions are sorely lacking--watch the Chapin company video. Have a one-handed 'Kwik Klamp' ready to hold together the central column and portions of the support bars as you thread through various bolts--the clamp also comes in handy for the rear legs and other places -- Also, get a few washers (M6/M8) because they are needed, otherwise nuts will get torqued-down against the metal frame components, creating scratches and a strong potential for future rust points. Finally, wait until the spreader is fully assembled and right-sided on level ground before making final torques on the 4 nuts/bolts that hold the main rear legs together, else it will not sit level. Inflate tires to 18psi -- Min is 15psi/max is 20 psi, which is not listed in the instructions and hard to read on the blackwall tires. If you call customer support, Chapin is great to work with -- I spoke/emailed their CS department and they were very helpful.

Definitely several cuts above the Scott's products in terms of quality and durability, but it's still just another Chinese made consumer product designed for homeowner use, but at first blush a pretty good one. Assembly was a pain even for me who owns every tool known to man and used to run a contracting company where I did plumbing, electrical, HVAC, tiling, custom carpentry, you name it. Directions were pretty good and it took a little over an hour. The hardest thing was putting on the stupid plastic handles. Had to boil them in water to get them to expand enough to get over the metal bars (which I first coated in a little Vaseline). The best part of the purchase was the huge discount over list. A bunch were stacked in my local HD store priced at $79.99 for clearance no doubt because around here anyone who would be in a position to pay $200 for a spreader would be contracting a landscaping service for his outdoor work anyway. So generally I'm pleased. No more pushing around the Scott's spreader with the unforgiving plastic wheels! Thanks, HD.

The unit has a good solid build with nice large pneumatic tires, unlike the cheap plastic ones that are found on lower priced units. No crazy dials and slides for product dispensing, though the dispensing lever is more on a pro level, without a self closing feature.
