Can you use this grill as a smoker?

Asked by: TTET1123654
Yes, it works quite well for that purpose, as well as for slow cooking, due to its size. Charcoal/wood chips can be set on one side of the charcoal frame, and the item to be smoked place so its not over the fire. With the lid closed a constant low enough temp can be maintained for several hous

what is the width when the side shelves are folded? or what size cover should i get for it?

Asked by: dnspumoni
Hi Dnspumoni, good question. I reached out to Char-Broil as it is not listed in the manual. Char-Broil does not publish this information. I did find out that you need a 53 inch grill cover. There are several models, made out of several types of material. Check them out on the website as the covers have a wide range of prices.

What is the height of the inside of grill when it is closed . We like to cook drunk chickens and want to make sure that it is tall enough . What are the grates made of ? I am needing a reply soon .

Asked by: Cort
The lid on model # 12301672 is going to measure about 10.10" in height. Please give us a call at 1-800-241-7548 for more information.

Customer Reviews

30 in. Charcoal Grill with Cast Iron Grates and Folding Side Shelves is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the product quality this company use to produce After owning a CharBroil Charcoal Grill for the last ten years, it finally deteriorated and had to be replaced. We saw this one and it was everything we wanted in a Charcoal Grill. When delivered, the package was approximately 100 lbs., much heavier than our previous grill. Obviously, we dismissed the first review of this grill being rickety. As we started to assemble the grill, it really did seem extremely sturdy. Then, I started to notice that the hardware (screws, nuts, bolts, etc.) were not tempered, meaning cured for heat. Not all the pieces were there as you got to the end, and there were no instructions of left over pieces to install this company's logo to the grill? Getting by all that and using the extra hardware we had at home, we got the grill together. It seemed fabulous. Then we took it out of the house and into the backyard. Now we realized, if this grill is not on solid flat ground, it is very rickety. I am extremely surprised by this type of quality from this company, especially over my last purchase from them. But, this is not the best. Read the review for the cover we purchased for this grill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for first couple years, then rusted out I liked the look and size of this which is why I purchased it. The side table is invaluable. But despite also purchasing a cover for it, the whole bottom pan to hold the ashes, (ie the sliding tray) as well as other components rusted completely away. I didn't realize the struts and support structures rusted and were gone as well until the replacement parts I ordered arrived. There was nothing to latch or slide the new ash pan in- the lower part of the frame was completely rusted away! When it was new, it worked great. I loved the thermometer, esp when doing smoked ribs that take 4-5 hours to do right. Everything tasted good coming out of the grill, but the value is just not there ,given its rapid rust process

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Flimsy At Best Cannot move it without something coming loose. Metal is thin enough to be bent with two fingers. Had to purchase additional fasteners and screws from a hardware store as many were missing from the parts package. Extremely beat-up from factory packaging. Only thing of quality is the grates. I will not buy another Char-Broil product. I would not recommend this or any other Char-Broil product to another buyer. Sorry I purchased it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Flimsy, charcoal tray rusted through after 1 year I bought this grill mid summer 2014. It's great as far as space goes but it seems to be made from substandard material. The grill tray rusted through in the first year, when I move the grill, everything gets all out of whack and the lid won't shut right and the ash tray won't close all the way. All in all I think is a very poorly made product and I would not purchase another one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Weak support brackets I bought this grill a few months ago. Recently I assembled the grill and conducted my first cooking project. The grilled cooked brilliantly but as a raised the coals the charcoal tray kept falling. The problem is the L-shaped-bracket near the level that hosts the infrastructure that controls the tray elevation isn't strong enough to support the weight of the coals. The Brackets has to be stronger for the design to work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Charcoal Tray Rusted and flimsy Rating poor only for the charcoal tray as it rusted after being put away covered in my shed from last years use. No to mention it is so flimsy when the charcoal is added on to it it drops down on its own when it is leveled high.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Terrible quality I received this grill as a wedding present. When I received it, it was pretty beat up in a couple of spots - and already rusted in some areas. It was frustrating from the get go because some of the spots where the metal was bent, were crucial spots - IE air can escape from them. I've used this grill many times. Do not expect to keep any type of temperatures with this thing. I can close off all the dampeners and the coals still burn. This makes zero sense. Without being able to control the air flow, you cannot control the temperatures. I do not recommend this grill. This is the only Charbroil I've ever had, and it will be my last. If I had any documentation on the gift for a return, I would certainly do so.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for the price, but could be better Build quality is good, but not fantastic. As others have noted, the latch on the front isn't the sturdiest thing they could have come up with, but it has worked so far for me. My real complaint is that the charcoal pan doesn't allow enough air to flow up from under the charcoal. My charcoal kept going out 2/3 of the way through cooking until i cut the bottom out of the pan and replaced it with expanded sheet metal; works great now. My dad's older (and admittedly nicer) Char-Broil uses grates similar to the cooking grates for the charcoal pan and does not suffer from this problem.
