Questions & Answers

I've read it can be difficult to keep the temperature low (200-225). Has anyone had success?

Asked by: Phil
I have owned an Akorn for 7 years. Every year I do 2 cooks in a row of 13 hrs each at 225. (3 buts per burn). Just make sure you come up slow and dont go over. Mine drops maybe 15 degrees overnight. I got a temp controller and you have to be careful with them on this grill. I only put int on once it is up to temp otherwise it will overheat. In spite of other reviewers comments mine has very little leaks. it heats up faster and is more efficient than the ceramic ones. I have done 26 hrs with one load of charcoal many times. You couldn't give me a ceramic one. As a matter of fact my wife did and after cooking on it 6 times I took it back. I wish they made a higher quality version of this one! I am thinking of replacing my old 7 year old R2D2 with this one with a cart.. I will replace the top with butcher block and all the screws with stainless steel. Hopefully last me another 7 to 10 years. I will keep my old one for large parties where I need 2.

What material is the table top? Is it metal?

Asked by: Duff
Mine was metal when I bought it in 2018. All my friends are jealous b/c they got the Akorn from other stores and they don't have the side table. It was definely worth it.

Is this a ceramic grill?

Asked by: ATL747
Not ceramic. But my boss has this and BGE, he swears Akorn is as good or better in maintaining heat and moisture. I made the juiciest spatchcocked chicken the other day.

Are the 2 Smaller front locking wheels included in this. I see in them in the 360 degree view and some photos here on HD website. But in the manual it shows 2 post legs for the front. I also have seen this model on youtube with the 2 small front locking wheel casters. Are they included as pictured?
Asked by: JQ
Yes, they are.

Customer Reviews

AKORN Kamado Kooker 20 in. Charcoal Grill in Grey with Cart is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 427.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could be better but worth it !! First the good. Assembled easily, and was ready to go in a short period of time. I have an early model ceramic egg at the house, and this was to use on our houseboat. We have cooked everything from chicken to bacon meatloaf, ribs and even a turkey. It will hold heat as low at 200 and on up over 500 without a problem. Once set, needs only minor adjustment. I just bought the smoking stone and hope to try indirect heat now that the polar vortex has subsided. OK, the improvements. Notice that this is on our houseboat, so first, I will replace all the exterior screws with stainless steel. Next, I will spray another coat of paint on the bottom rack of the stand. I personally want to put a charcoal grid with smaller holes in the bottom. I would also buy the cover if left outside. The handle is showing some wear and if it rains, the charcoal dump will fill up with water and make a mess. I did not deduct points from my review because I really should have covered it. I would definitely buy this again and highly recommend it.

The warning I will offer is if you plan to EVER use or store your grill in an open air, uncovered environment, beware. This grill has a design flaw. As rainwater runs down the sides, it seeps into the bottom joint between the removable ash pan and the main body. The ash pan section is held in place by two clamps and has a seal to keep air out. It does that better than I thought it would but what it won't do is keep a single drop of moisture out. Moisture and ash mean serious rust fast. I take care of everything I buy and I bought the custom cover but had to order it, no one ever stocks it for the cart unit. I have always kept it covered but on the rare occasion when it began to rain before the unit cooled enough to cover proved to be enough to damage it. I had to completely disassemble the unit and use a wire wheel on it to remove the rust from both surfaces where removable bottom section meets main body of egg. It was rusted horribly bad, almost ruined. I painted it with Rustoleum but the rust was severe and the metal very thin in this area. The two times I was late covering this grill, I took the bottom off the next day and one of those times I found water standing in it and poured the water out and rinsed it good. This is a serious design flaw with this otherwise decent kamado. (This review is for the grill but since the cover is so critical to my issue I will add that it sucks. It looks good, feels good but I have had to replace it each year. Cold and sun both absolutely destroy it. You cannot put it on with the grill still warm, it will ruin it. They are high and they have to be ordered. You won't find one without ordering one, at least not for the side cart unit like I bought.) Great unit except for this flaw. My unit is in it's 3rd year. For twice as much I could have bought the Vision Grill ceramic. I will be getting it as soon as this one rusts out and won't allow airflow control because of it. Disappointed in what was an otherwise exceptional grill. If you are grilling under a good roof line, but this unit with confidence that you can keep up with any kamado and have better features, But DON'T keep it on an open patio, even if you plan to cover it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth every dime The only reason this did not get an excellent rating was the company shipped me the wrong parts. It's supposed to have two wheel legs and to caster legs. Mine was shipped with 3 caster legs and one wheel leg. We were in a pinch and could not wait to get the correct parts to put it together because of a planned BBQ. My father is pretty resourceful and rigged it so it stays put on our patio. Took about 4 hrs to put together because of that (wine may have also been a factor) So mine is NOT mobile which means I lost a huge selling feature! The actual grilling however is perfect! Steaks are perfectly seared and juicy. We are never going to pricey restaurants for steak again. Ribs are tender and it has plenty of room for burgers and dogs. We use lump coal and got an inexpensive electric starter. I have the stone but have not put it to use yet. I can't wait to smoke a roast! Have yet to do chicken as well but pretty sure the Thanksgiving turkey is going on the chargriller!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Akorn King Griller is cool Bought online and UPS delivered. Put it together myself.Good directions, not hard. Love the cart prep area. I have used the Akorn a couple times and the food flavor is wonderful but I still need to get the smoking temps right. I have taken off the lower vent and used a copper high heat sealer along with some high heat gasket material to be able to control air flow better. Have not used it since that fix. Added a Weber 22.5 grate where the optional smoking stone would go to put a pizza stone there for direct heat control and a stainless charcoal basket ( used colander from Salvation Army) to catch the ash and measure the lump. Also a large floor tile on the cart to put hot things on. It looks good though. Read all the posts on the web to see how to tweak the Akorn to be more efficient and worth a lot more for much less than a ceramic model. This is a good buy at HD.

Ordered online and had it delivered to my house. I was able to assemble alone in about 2.5 hours including time to take apart the frame because I installed the frame backwards. Packaging is excellent. The box looked like it had been thrown off the truck and down a cliff. No damage inside, I was amazed. Don't over tighten. Screw holes when mounting the grill to the base did not align at first but if you loosen the frame screws you can align the holes easily. Grill works 100% as advertised; very efficient with coal usage. I bought a chimney starter but after some trial and error, I don't think I'll need that much unless I want to get a quick hot fire. It takes a while to learn how to control the heat. Don't use the chimney starter for slow long burns (novice griller here) just use a fire starter and let the coals naturally get hot. It will get hot quickly. Also get a instant digital thermometer. The built in is about 20% too low.

After getting this assembled and seasoning , I threw a few cheap hotdogs in , "I hadn't cook over charcoal in a long time" after ten min they were cook perfect and tasted great , also did chicken which always flares up , but rarely did on this cooker . The assembly instructions were a little confusing , but had together in about forty five min. Char- Griller suggest using lump charcoal , and found that brickett charcoal did burn faster and were harder to control the heat . I've read where others complain about the seals or gaskets leaking , yes I've notice smoke leaking from both ash pan , and lid , but not to the point where it's a problem . I guess there are only two things that bug me , the hinge on the lid seems kinda flimsy , and the ash pan is a bit of a pain to remove. All in all I would not have a problem buying another and or recommend to Anyone ! I've had this for about two months and I use it about two to three times a week even when its 7* with a wind chill -1* 2/14 /17

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG buy this grill After my Gas Grill literally fell apart after 8 years it was time to go shopping. I stumbled on this while looking around and after reading the reviews decided it was a GREAT PRICE $279. All I can say is BUY THIS GRILL now. Get a bag of Royal Oak Lump ( forget the brickettes ) and fall in love with grilling again. It wasn't difficult to put together, looks great, cooks even better. I was surprised at how fast this thing came up to 400-500-600 degrees - Maiden Voyage consisted of 1 Ribeye, 1 Filet, 1 NY Strip, and 1/4 chicken... even grilling in the dark the food turned out FANTASTIC. I also put a bunch of veggies on a pan (with holes for grilling ) and they were also FANTASTIC. I haven't used coal in 20 years - but now I'm sold - and for this price believe me, you can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best grill ever owned I bought this after looking for a grill that had the charcoal at the Lowest height because of the ceiling height of our new covered porch. My previous grill would flare up and the heat was causing dark spots on the ceiling. After trying it for a year now, I can say it's the best grill we've ever owned. I will never go back to any other kind. I've learned to do BBQ, grilled plaintains, veggies etc. The steaks are amazing because I can get the temp regulated better than I could on the old grill. Worth every dime to get this.
