You can use soaked wood chips and charcoal. Wood pellets are not typically recommended in the regular charcoal grills, usually because of their size as well as how quickly they burn.

Rusts quickly!
This grill seemed like a good purchase at the time. The cover leaked water into the grill causing everything in the inside to rust beyond repair. The grates and grease catch tray just crumbled apart. The thermometer was hit or miss. And the heat wasn't very consistent with the gas portion of the grill. Plus the grilling areas are too narrow. I'm calling a scrap person ASAP to haul this piece of junk out of my yard. Do yourself a favor and don't purchase this grill.

3in1? I say All in One
The body is thicker than I was expecting. Since I did not buy it in the store, I had it shipped to my house and put it together myself. I did in on day where temperatures were 25. It was cold but was straight forward. Took me about 3 1/2 hours with fighting with the cold, and alone. The next day it was 19 with a wind chill of 6 and I did an apple cherry smoke on top of the Canola Oil season, for 4 hours. Followed that up with a Smoking of baked potatoes and a port tenderloin. Oh so delicious everything came out. With that said I noticed a few things that I hope will help other out with this Grill/Smoker 1. A chimney of charcoal will last roughly 2 hours before you NEED to add more charcoal. 2. Smoker side, with how small it is I have a 50 degree difference from far wall to the firebox side. (225 at wall, 275 at fire box) I may try to make my own diffuser plate. The lid Temp was was reading 300 while between the grate numbers. Now I have my base temps down. 3. The smoke leakage on my unit was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The firebox did not leak anything. My smoke leaks were around the far side of door, bottom by handle, and from around the smoke stack. All minuscule. I do not plan on doing mods to correct this. 4. The Propane side, as everyone says, does get hot fast. For my burn in season, I used one burner, at it held temperature on low at 325, or on high was 375. 5. The gas side lid was welded off, and Char-Griller is taking care of this issue, so I am giving their CS an A+ that they do value us customers. With the single usage I was able to get on it, more will come once the weather warms up more, I am very pleased with this. I bought this to replace an older gas grill, as I wanted a smoker, and with this having the gas side too, I can keep my grilling on weekdays also when I have a late work night. I do not plan on using the Charcoal side for charcoal, but strictly for a smoking chamber, and when I do charcoal grill, I will do this in the SFB. If you are looking for a Gas Charcoal combo, I would very highly suggest this Texas Trio.

I absolutely love this Grill. I put it together myself in about 2 hours. I took the time to properly season it before it’s first use. I did multiple test burns to learn the best way to maintain temps in the smoker side. Once I had it dialed in I smoked a couple cheap pork loins. Then it was ready for the big show! Everything I’ve made so far has been excellent!

I received this grill as a birthday gift and all I can say is it is the best trio grill on the market at this price. If you are looking for charcoal, gas, and a smoker box all in one this is the grill to buy! The smoker box and the charcoal side hold their temperature really well even after you are done cooking (which is pretty impressive). The only downside of this grill is the fact that the paint under the firebox and the charcoal side tends to get a little chippy if you build up the fire or the heat too much. Be sure to wipe or spray the top with cooking oil to help keep it looking new and free from rust. The matching cover is a must as well.

Overall the product is great. I bought if for my husband for Father's Day and it was delivered in the rain wrapped to protect it to the front steps. He opened the door and was VERY excited. The only issue was that our grill was assembled with the bottom shelf in the wrong position.

smoked my first brisket a couple of weeks ago and it came out great! looking forward to using the smoked weekly!! The gas side of the grill has already had some of the enamel peel of after 1st use/seasoning (done exactly as Char-Griller website says) reached out to Char-Griller and they are saying the grill was overheated! Buyer beware. I am hoping to get a few years out of grill before redoing deck and upgrading.

This thing is awesome, love the versatility of three different ways to grill. A couple of draw backs, had an issue with the lid not closing all the way on one side, and the starter for the main area isn't working really well.

My rating is not based on the item but on the service from Home Depot. I thought I was purchasing a brand new 3 in 1 Grill from Home Depot only to find out that it had been used. Yes after several minutes of discussion they decided to refund $100. In addition Home Depot also sold me a half emptied so-called new propane tank.
