NPT became the standard and referred to as IPT iron tapered pipe thread.
Yes one can use it to drain with from PVC to metal pipe or from metal pipe to PVC.
Male threaded side will go into an 1 1/2" pipe with female threads, the socket side will accommodate an 1 1/2" pipe.
Yes. It’s better to screw plastic into metal (not the other way around) to avoid splitting plastic. I recommend using something as a sealant/lubricant and a wire wheel of the correct size on a drill to prep the cast iron threads. A sealant/lubricant can be Teflon tape (about 7 wraps) or a 100% silicone caulk, or “pipe dope”. Thread this part in carefully to not cross thread, then use fine sand paper, pvc cleaner (optional), purple primer, and pvc solvent glue to connect you pvc pipe after this threaded adaptor is fully installed in the cast iron. Good luck!
yes
Use a ¾”-14 pipe tap.
