The description indicates the pan has been preseasoned. What oil was used for this?

Asked by Abby October 11, 2020

Answer

Not sure about this pan although commercial pans are usually similar. Could not reach Classic Cuisine . However Thought I'd ask the Lodge company about the oil they season their wok with and they put me in touch with the corporate farmers where they get their oil from. I then called them. Its a huge agribusiness company (Archer, Daniels,Midland) using GMO soy that has been sprayed with normal pesticides and then processed with hexane and deodorized. The Lodge company then uses the oil for seasoning the cast iron.Seasoning is just oil baked onto cast iron through a process called polymerization. It gives your cookware that classic black patina. Seasoning forms a natural, easy-release cooking. Polymerization actually fuses the oil to the iron which is a very uneven surface and it is fired in very high heat process to make the oil a part of the permanent cooking surface. There is no way to wash it off. Hexane is used to extract edible oils from seeds and vegetables, as a special-use solvent, and as a cleaning agent. Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure of humans to high levels of hexane causes mild central nervous system (CNS) effects, including dizziness, giddiness, slight nausea, and headache. It is quite toxic. This is quite different from the classic kind of Chinese wok which has no pre-seasoning. It Best To get a pen that is not pre-seasoned. It is not difficult to season an Iron pan, Simply apply the flaxseed or grape seed oil in a thin layer Inside and outside the Pan. Place it upside down in a 350-450 degree oven for one hour. Place a piece of foil on bottom of oven to prevent any drip (After first cooking, don’t wash with soap, ok to clean with water and brush. Then put very small amt of oil in pan and wipe inside before putting away.) do this second procedure every time you cook for at least 10 times and you should have a wonderful nonstick surface. Just don’t use soap or other harsh chemicals

What's the bottom diameter?

Asked by Jingfang August 30, 2020

Answer

6 inches.

Can you use metal spatula?

Asked by Joey August 20, 2020

Answer

Sure. It’s cast iron. It’s mostly a curved surface so a flat spatula won’t work that well except for the flat bottom area

How much does it weigh?

Asked by Seri August 7, 2020

Answer

8lbs 14 oz. heavy and heavy duty but easy to move because of the handles. Joe

This Wok pan is very heavy and well made. It is great for sauteing vegetables or zucchini noodles! It can be a bit awkward to clean in a sink by hand because of its weight and size, but make sure not to put it in the dishwasher. I have several pieces of cast iron cookware and I love the way cast iron cooks. It holds the heat well and lasts forever. I would definitely recommend this product.

Incredibly nice cast iron Wok is a standout pre-seasoned performer. At about 14" wide and almost 9lbs, this is a substantial piece of cookware that fits right in with our All-Clad and other higher-end cookware. This is a pre-seasoned wok, so you don't have to go through all of the steps to clean an season an unseasoned wok, you can just essentially give it a rinse with warm mater and use it. We'll mostly use this for stir-fries on the stove and to tempura-batter grilled veggies on occasion outside on the side burner. So far, two stir-fry meals down and both were delicious. The Wok heated evenly, held heat well, and was overall easy to use. Everything just tasted much richer than the same dish cooked in a traditional pan. This is our first wok, so there's not much basis for comparison other than it's much easier and tastier than a 12" pan for a chicken or beef teriyaki stir-fry. I'd bet we'll have this for a long time given it's heft and apparent quality of construction and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a large pre-seasoned cast iron wok.

I actually got this cast iron wok as a gift for my wife. ,, so far she loves it. It is very large and will hold a boat load of STUFF,,,, the first picture shows a very large cucumber lying in the wok. Did not have to do much prep work for her to start using it. Warm it up a little added some vegetable oil and went to town. The wok does get hot so you may need to experiment a little before cooking a meal. Nothing better than cast iron, PS a little heavy takes two hands to handle it. she loves it. Pictures show how large the wok is.

My wife loves this wok. Made by Classic Cuisine, the cast iron wok measures 14’ across and is plenty deep enough. Even though it is advertised as being made with pre-cured cast iron, don’t forget it still has to be seasoned, which is not a big deal. Instructions on how to do this are included. The thickness is very consistent and the heavy duty cast iron in the wok helps to insure a remarkably even heat distribution. No hot or cold spots in the surface makes cooking super easy. And, it cleans up with little effort. I had three coronary blockages last June and my cardiologist keep after me to eat healthy meals. With this wok, the healthy meals my wife makes are also delicious. I wish we had gotten one sooner,

This is a great looking Wok that performs as well as it looks. Something you won't mind leaving on the stove. The cast iron has a slight texture to it allowing food to “rest” on the sides while allowing other foods to cook at the bottom. i prefer this to smooth sided modern woks. My fear was this would be too heavy to use. It’s lighter than expected at 8lbs 14 ounces. Not super light but easy enough to get in and out of the cupboard. For comparison my enameled Dutch oven is 9.5lbs without the lid. One tip when seasoning, If the oil is still tacky crank the heat up to 400 and put it back in the oven until it stops smoking. Seasoning in the oven makes a lot of smoke so be sure to have good ventilation. I used coconut oil which works well to season. You can also season over an open flame outside or on the BBQ if you can get it hot enough. Being black I don’t have to obsess with getting it to look shiny. On my gas stove the Wok stays very hot even with a lot of food in it. I was able to sear 2lbs of beef and 1lbs of mushrooms all at once without it steaming the beef. Mushrooms came out perfect. I like my vegetables slightly seared but a little crisp. This wok accomplishes that without using too much oil. The wok is very versatile. Since you may leave it on the stove may as well learn to cook all sorts of things with it. The flat bottom acts like a 6 inch sauté pan. Use it for scrambling eggs, frying a burger or chicken breast. My 12 inch sauté lid rests about half way up making it useful for simmering sauces or soups or stews. Also works great for frying. The sides are nice and high but the bottom is only 6 inches in diameter so you can do a few pieces of food without using too much oil. I plan to use this camping over a wood fire. The kids will love to cook their own food. since it cooks quickly everyone can customize a stir fry to their liking. I bet it would work great over a rocket stove. Be sure to get a spider strainer and a wok spatula. Being cast iron you can use metal utensils without the fear of damaging the wok. Its very tough. Woks were were designed to be portable and cook all sorts of foods so get creative!

Love this wok and the best part is that it’s cast iron! I just recently got into cast iron cooking so having a cast iron wok was just completing my collection of cookware. This is a nice big size and I love the handles on each end which don’t seem to get too hot. I did season it prior to use which is a bit time consuming. I do trust the Classic Cuisine brand as I now have a few of their pieces and have been very pleased so far. My first meal was just a simple teriyaki stir fry which came out beautifully. Nothing stuck to it and it crisped the veggies up nicely and cleanup was a breeze. It is suggested to “dry” it on the stovetop after water cleaning which works wonderfully. I do have a glass top range so I am always worried about the weight of a cast iron pot but this wok isn’t as heavy as most cast iron sauté pans. I really like this wok and recommend adding this to the rest of your cast iron cookware. It can be used on all cooking surfaces including grill which is a huge bonus!

This is one large, actually behemoth, but not too heavy wok. You're not likely to be using this in the house; mine's dedicated to the outdoor gas grille where I use it for stir fry and deep fat frying [including tempuras]. If I can find a domed cover large enough, I'll also try baking my bread in it! 14" across the top, 6.5" bottom; stands 4" tall. As a wok should be, the walls are thin, "chiming" when struck. Out of the box, I found the wok to need help. While it might appear to be pre-seasoned [contrary to the included 'care' card], I did what any respectable cook would do with new cast iron. First, scour the interior surfaces smooth [it came with a totally unacceptable very rough 'splatter' surface, but 30 minutes later with 80 grit an muscle, it came down to a relatively smooth ... and adequate ... surface finish, almost pewtery silver]. Then a bath in warm soapy water; then a dry over a flame, then rubbed a generous tablespoon of canola on the insides, into the over upside down for 1 hour at 350F. You know it's properly seasoned with the finish is bronzy and not sticky.

Excellent size and quality cast iron Wok with handles. The Wok is about 14 inches wide. This pan out of the box is pre-seasoned and ready to go but suggests of course you clean it and properly season it again. My wife is from the Philippines and loves to cook as well as I do American cuisine. This is our first real cast iron Wok that we own and probably will be the last as this cast iron beauty will last forever as long as it is not abused and properly taken care of. We love it. Made several meals already that came out perfectly. Exceptionally great for frying virtually anything. I for reason of testing out this Wok made Pork Adobo which is water base and the meal is boiled, and then simmered. It came out perfect and the Wok after proper cleaning and seasoned looks like it came out of the box brand new. Very pleased with this product and I highly recommend this Classic Cuisine Cast Iron Wok to everyone. Happy Cooking!

This is extremely heavy cast iron Wok i have ever seen or used. When i got the package, it was so heavy that i did not expect it to be Wok. Its a single piece cast Wok, sturdy and good quality. The interior was not smooth which was little awkward, because other higher quality ones usually have a smooth surface inside the Wok. Have to see how that fares after multiple cookings. This is NOT dishwasher safe, has special cleaning instructions using oil, using oven etc etc.
