yes that is how I use it and it doesnt fall over I stack shoes in it.

The hardware mounting brackets (which hook into the slotted vertical wall mounted supports) have pre-drilled mounting holes. You can just barely see them at the top and bottom back corners in the image. One problem with turning the unit 90 degrees is that the bottom mounting brackets will not line up with the vertical supports because of the thickness of the top piece. A second problem is that the top piece is not solid (like a hollow core veneer door) and will not be able to hold the top bracket screws. The veneer is only 1/8' thick. I do not believe that trying to turn this unit 90 degrees will result in a unit that is safely secured to the vertical supports. I hope this helps.

It does not come with them & I didn't see those in the closet collection. But I'm sure you could find some baskets to fit somewhere.
