NOT RECOMMENDED - NOT PAINTABLE - POOR QUALITY
This is an update to a previous review: Purchased 2 of the Unfinished Clear Pine 5-Lite Interior Barn Door Slabs. The doors are solid and looked great when removed from the packaging. But, once the doors were primed and painted (which the product description stated these were paintable doors) the door finish begin to bubble and fold (see pictures) and small cracks began to appear. It is like the "veneer" is warping and pulling away from the door. This occurred on both doors, so it is likely a design/manufacturing issue rather than just a bad door. I contacted the customer service department for the manufacturer (Colonial Elegance) who agreed the issues were a manufacturing defect. Colonial Elegance instructed me to return the doors to Home Deport and place another order. It took two trips to the local Home Depot, multiple calls to Home Deport On-line Customer Service (only to be trapped in a phone tree that never resulted in speaking to a person) all before Home Depot would agree to take the doors back. Very frustrating process. Anyway, I ordered 2 replacement doors. The doors arrived in good condition. The doors were painted and almost immediately small cracks appeared on nearly all of the wood surfaces. Making the door look old and damaged. As previously noted, the product description, as well as my interaction with Colonial Elegance, stated these doors are paintable. So, one one would conclude painting the doors would be acceptable means of finishing the doors. I do not recommend these "paintable doors", not sure if the product would be different if a stain would be applied to the wood surfaces. This entire process has been frustrating; and, the cost/time associated with waiting for the order to arrive and painting (four doors now) has been quite burdensome.

Hello,
We are sorry to hear your experience has not been what you expected. We’re normally known for our exceptional attention to detail, and we regret that we missed the mark. This is a known case that has been escalated internally and at supplier level. Unfortunately we were not able to offer a satisfactory resolution in this case, but are working to understand how this could of happened to rectify for future as this is not something that has occurred previously. We do hope that someday you give us the opportunity to make it right by trying another one of our products. Thank you, ColonialEleganceInc

I contacted the manufacturer, and they were easy to work with and agreed the issues with the door was likely a manufacturing defect. So, after many conversations with Home Depot about how to get replacements (very bad experience with Home Depot customer service refusing to take the doors back), new doors were ordered. As I stated, I ordered replacement doors (2 doors) following the manufacturer agreeing that the original doors just had defects and this is not a typical issue. The doors arrived looking good no noticeable issues. The doors were sprayed with white paint, and almost immediately small cracks started to appear on the wood surfaces of each door. The doors now look like they are old and in need of repair/replacement. I would not recommend purchasing these doors if you are planning on painting. I cannot say if staining the "paintable doors" is the better way to finish the wood. But, painting the "paintable doors" certainly is not the way to go.

These are pretty nice doors. They came fairly well finished from the factory (I ordered 3 overall and used them as barn doors). I did end up taking a finish sander to them just to knock of the rest of the little burrs and such, then premiered and painted them and they came out pretty well. Only real complaint is that every pane of glass has a ANSI rating etched into it on the lower bottom corner. It's in light ink, and probably has to be there for some reason, but it's a bit annoying. I haven't tried to remove it yet.

Door seems like good quality. Not quite ready to paint and that protective film...
Seems like a good sturdy heavy door. But it only takes one issue to make it poor. The door isn’t quite ready to paint, maybe stain but not paint. There are small surface cracks in the wood that are showing through my white paint. The edges are also pretty rough and showing through my white paint. The protective film is horrible to remove. It seems as it they applied the film to the glass too far under the frame, so it’s stuck in there really good and just breaks. I’m going to end up having to use a blade to remove it and likely damage the door. What a waste of money.

The best practice to remove the film is to carefully slice with a sharp knife or razor gently along the seam and the plastic will then peal off easily. The plastic should only be removed after the door is painted.

This door is so beautiful! It was very easy to install and now that it is hung, it adds elegance to the bathroom. The frosted door cannot be seen through, but creates light in the hallway when the light is on in the bathroom. We love it!
