About This Product

The beauty and warmth of natural hardwood shines through on these PureBond Red Oak Plywood panels from Columbia Forest Products. Assembled using a soy-based PureBond technology, these 3/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets feature American-grown timber throughout with decorative red oak face and back veneers that produce stellar results on DIY woodworking projects. Using a proper saw blade, these sheets can be custom-cut to suit an assortment of carpentry applications, including construction of furniture, shelves, bookcases, built-in cabinets, media centers, headboards and more. This formaldehyde-free plywood is a cost-competitive alternative to potentially health-hazardous UF boards that may release air-degrading fumes over time. It's as exquisite and robust as solid hardwood but without the expense and heft.

This panel can be painted, however, we typically see other, lighter species such as maple or birch in paint applications. If you want to discuss more on this topic, give me a call at 800-637-1609. Thanks - Michael

We offer custom cuts on the project panels that we sell online, not the in-store 4ft. x 8ft. You can check with your local store to have those panels cut. Thanks - Michael

Would be nice to use as a potato bin? I want it to look nice. I don’t want the cheap scratchy plywood.

              Answer This Question

This plywood is made of hardwood with a red oak veneer, giving it a nice, smooth finish. It's not the "cheap, scratchy plywood" you're trying to avoid. However, it's designed for interior use and isn't inherently moisture-resistant. If you plan to store potatoes directly on the wood, the moisture from the potatoes could potentially damage the plywood over time. You would likely need to add a liner or sealant to protect the wood from moisture if you use it for a potato bin.

The PureBond is a good panel to work with. The interior structure is solid and the veneer is good. Finishing was easy and looks very nice. I would purchase again

                    Beautiful grain, terrible quality
Beautiful wood grain, terrible quality. For the price per sheet, I would expect much higher quality. Super thin veneer and the core separated during the cutting process. Disappointing.

I am sorry for the issues you had with our product. You shouldn't have had any separation of the glue bond under normal use. I would be happy to discuss this with you in more detail and see how we can resolve it. Give me a call at 800-637-1609 if you would like to discuss. Thanks - Michael
                      Price skyrocketed while quality plummeted
I knew the price had skyrocketed over the last several years, but I was disappointed to see that the quality has also plummeted. I was disappointed at the quality I saw in the store yesterday. I had to pick through 15 sheets to find 4 good-to-decent ones. In my current project, I need both sides to look reasonably good. Due to the price, I need to use as much of the sheet as possible without working around problem areas. The back side of most of the sheets was missing portions of veneer.

                        Don’t buy this
This is absolute trash, veneer is barely a 1/16” thick, lots of bare spots. I think I might be able to salvage enough out of three sheets for my project. Will not be buying again.

I had high hopes for Columbia Forest Products PureBond Birch Plywood, but the quality control is abysmal. Several of my sheets started delaminating almost immediately, and the sheer number of voids makes it hard to get much usable material. Worst of all, some sheets have debris pressed into them, even on the good face side, including cut veneer fibers embedded in the surface, with some pieces as large as 8x4 inches. I also have dark rough patches in the face veneers. This makes me seriously question whether any inspection happens at the factory.

Warped instantly and delaminated once cut.
Terrible product! I bought this “cabinet grade oak plywood” and it delaminated as soon as I cut it and started to warp immediately. I had a short 20 minutes drive, no precipitation, and placed both sheets directly into my heated garage. The next morning I tried to work with the wood and on the first rip the warping became drastically worse, 2” warp over 6’. The sheet also continued to delaminate as I tried my best to save the project. The is the MOST expensive sheet of plywood in the store.

Delaminated immediately after cutting into it
Checked the sheet carefully before buying it. It wasn't until I started cutting it into 4" wide strips that I discovered one of the layers had completely delaminated throughout the entire center of the sheet. No way to have known this until leaving the store and cutting the sheet.

                              Full of voids, horrible quality
I bought a sheet of 3/4 Red Oak Columbia Forest Products plywood. I am building a shelving unit for some family. Moving it around to sand and finish, my fingers easily poked through the veneer into many large voids. I can't believe I've wasted this much time and money on such a useless product. Wood under the veneer is extremely soft.
