Can this be used for a table top?

Looking to make my own dinning room table
Asked by: Joe
For a cheap top yes. Vineer is thinner than tissue paper, don't know how they can slice it that thin. If you try to sand it, you will expose the next layer of glue and junk wood. Edges will chip easy.

3/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. PureBond Red Oak Plywood is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 286.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from CDX with a sprayed veneer Recent 14 sheet purchase. Like a previous commenter, this used to be a decent product, now it's trash. Several years ago I built cabinets etc. with good results. This time around no such luck. The sheets I purchased have warped and twisted. On two sheets I ran a string from the end to end and there was a 1.5" and 2" bow in the center. I've tried joining two pieces using biscuits, TnG and dowels - didn't work. No luck with router or shaper due to the 'wavy' edges - I won't even try finger joining. The joints had highs and lows (and yes, I used a glue press). When sanded to even out the disparity the veneer went away. Not being able to join, the drop was devastating. Six pieces out of two sheets rather than nine. Oh yeah, the voids in the laminate were plentiful and BIG, some just below the veneer. The more I worked with this the more I just wanted to use hammer and nails and spray paint. HD was gracious about refunding my money but I was out a LOT of miles and HOURS of work with no alternative.

The veneer is not glued on well at all and is very thin, so thin that it was cracked on many of the panels. I had to sort through most of the stack in order to find an ok one.I used a brand new saw blade and the veneer splintered badly on all the cuts. However since I had intention to round over the edges with a router I did not mind the splinters. Once I started to run the router over it that is when the trouble really started, large chunks of the veneer were flying off it, and yes it was a sharp bit. There were large areas that had no glue at all. I have purchased oak plywood from HD before and never had any trouble, this time however I cannot say the same. Like I stated earlier the veneer is very thin and badly glued on,only one side is free of knots, so if your project is going to have both sides in view this plywood is not what you are going to buy. The description says "cabinet grade", I say hardly so, to me this plywood is a step above exterior grade and not worth the money charged.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BUYER BEWARE I have used this product for years in my cabinet shop. I purchased a sheet of the plywood for a project in my own home. I looked at two sheets, the first had big void visible on the edges of the plywood, the second sheet looked good, I cut it up into shelves for cabinets that I had built, edged the plywood and then finished sanding the panels. I noticed that circular bubbles appeared during the finish sanding process. I made the mistake of pushing on the bubble and found a void was under the bubbles. There were eight additional bubbles found in the the one sheet of plywood, and those were the ones that I noticed, there may be more. Based on the quality of this product, I will be discontinuing the use of this material in my cabinet shop and seek out other suppliers.

I am reasonably satisfied with the product for the price I paid. However, 2 of the sheets had some defects which weren't discovered until I was cutting the sheets into cabinet pieces. There were occasional pieces of ply glued between sheets of ply creating bumps within the plys. I was able to remove these errant pieces with some effort but thought the manufacturers quality control needs improvement. You should examine each sheet for these awkward bumps before purchasing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks nice Was buying it for a more durable outer side, I see the thin layer covering the (probably) poplar layers. Would of been happier if the outer layer was thick, maybe not as thick as the door veneer yet thick. This stuff chipped very easy when they cut it at the store. Going to have to lose a little bit. Hope it works and doesn't get destroyed when I try to create wth it. Need to think it out, may use something else.... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I used this to build a few floating shelves for our master bathroom. I was looking for something ... I used this to build a few floating shelves for our master bathroom. I was looking for something that was 1/2" but only 3/4" was available, so I made that work. The plywood was in great shape on the rack, and I did not have to pick through to find one good sheet, which seems to be rare these days. My biggest complaint would be when cutting this particular plywood, if you are cutting against the grain (crosscut), it is nearly impossible to prevent the veneer top from chipping out. I used a specific blade for fine finish cuts on my table saw, as well as painters tape to hold everything in place over the cut line. It wasn't terrible or unusable, it just made it more difficult when trying to get the shelves to a finished state. A little filler, sanding and stain made it all look great, but I never like putting in extra work on a "premium" material, when that is one of the main reasons for buying "premium". All said and done, I am very pleased with the results, and the stain applied evenly and looks great. I would buy again, but only because in my area, there are limited options for oak plywood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Okay My 4x8ft sheet of Red Oak "5" ply (with very thin .03" real wood veneers-not really another "Ply") arrived from truck shipment in good condition. For storage and eventual use, I had to rip into 2ft x 8ft sections. I didn't have any veneer tear outs and didn't run across any laminate voids. The sheet had a slight bow, about 1\2" over its length, but the factory edges were very square. Overall, the thin red oak real wood grain is very nice on the good side, and okay on the secondary side (will be good for project interiors). However, I'd really have preferred a full .750" overall thickness (not .705) which a veneer thickness of 1\16" could have accomplished, additionally creating "real world" wood finishing stability for carpenters! I do not have much faith I can get a quality project complete with out using a bunch of TLC in handling, cutting and finishing that will last. I'll pay much more from other manufactures to get a sheet finish that I can reliably work with and one that I know will have lasting beauty!

The oak vernier had many surface cracks. These were not immediately noticeable, but after close inspection, were very visible.
