This 15.3 cu. in. ceiling fan box allows you to safely install a fan or lighting fixture during construction. Ideal for installation during new construction or remodeling, it can be installed anywhere with attic access. Featuring a heavy-duty, all-metal, dual-mount electrical box, the ceiling fan box works with any model of ceiling fan. The box is 1-1/2 in. deep and includes 8-32 threads for cover plates and lightweight fixtures and 10-24 threads for ceiling fans and heavier fixtures. The box supports fans up to 70 lbs. and lighting fixtures up to 150 lbs. It comes with everything you need for installation, including a metal cover to protect wires during drywall installation and painting.

AnswersYes it can there will be a gap around it that you will need to have something to cover it. The box will need a rafter to mount too to be able to hold the weight of the ceiling fan.
I do not understand why it has a cover? If you install the cover, how do you install the fan?

Answerssome plastic ceiling box's have the mounting screw go through the box to the rafter under it. Most likely it is not rated to hold a fan. If your able cut out the old box you can put a old work ceiling fan box in it's place.

AnswersJesus Home Depot does sell numerous different 4 inch round box ceiling covers. Some have a knockout in the center of them these are called rough covers. They stock them in 3.5 and 4 inch sizes. If your local Home Depot does not carry them look at Home Depot.com Home Depot sells them in 4 inch size a blank plastic Finish covers, paintable or white finish style plastic covers four inch waterproof covers and four inch rough covers or blank covers. Please disregard the previous HD associate response or answer that they do not carry the covers.

This is a heavy-duty ceiling fan electrical box designed to be attached to a wood stud and provide the necessary weight handling capacity for mounting a ceiling fan. It is built of heavy gauge metal and provides several options for screw and electric connections placement. Box comes with cover and mounting/ground screws and a Romex wire connector. Two metal ears on the box edges provide a good mounting surface for the fan plate. An economical study box to provide a very strong mount for your fan.

It includes all the mounting screws two # 10 and two #8 screws, 5 knockouts, one Romex connector and ground screw. As any typical metal box, it is more that capable of holding any fan to four-inch diameter box. There several ways to mount the box and has several holes to give the installer many options. There box includes a small instruction page.

I received my 1-1/2 in. Deep 15.3 cu. in. Ceiling Fan Box with Metal Cover. After opening the box and inspecting the item I can tell it is very heavy duty and will be able to support a ceiling fan with no problem. It came with all the hardware to install it. The instructions are wrote very well and they're easy to follow. I already have a couple ceiling fans installed in my house but when I install another one I will definitely use this ceiling fan box.
