Can multiple panels be daisy-chained together by running 14/2 cable between them and using wire nuts in the built-in junction box to connect the conductors with the built in wires? As I understand it, code only allows a certain number of conductors inside a junction box based on box size, and it's not clear to me whether two 14/2 cables could be run into the box or just one?
Asked by: Scott
I am running three in parallel, wired as you suggest. I do caution, that the box in the unit is rather small. There is room for two 14/2 cables, if you do not have the wire lengths overly long. Two of the three units that I chained together required three romex cables, and that was very tight, quite a struggle to get the wires into the box and I had to cut them short, which made the work that much more awkward. (Be sure to clip the unit firmly onto the ceiling frame first, as wrestling with it otherwise will make it fall out.) Yes, there is a limit to the number of things that should be hosted on one circuit, but that involves codes.

so how do you hook this to a dimmer does it require two extra wires where do the purple and gray hook to. what kind of a book have you printed
Asked by: Bob
The purple and grey wires go to separate wires Yes, wires that will go to the dimmer switch wires need to be separate wires running alongside the 110v romex from the switch to the fixture, attaching to those grey and purple wires. Be sure to get a dimmer switch labeled as a 10v control, to use this feature. They are a little costly (I paid $24). You can avoid the extra wires if you buy an even costlier remote apparatus, or if you install a control switch right up where the light is, and use a stepladder; this was my solution, and it works because we mainly set it one way and leave it. The units are quite bright without dimming.

I am trying to replace 60W screw in bulb with this troffer flat panel. I understand this is primarily for drop ceilings. However, i see some reviewers have rigged up a frame to mount this flush. My question is around the wiring. Can i just connect the wires from my light socket to this? Or does it need any special wiring?
Asked by: Sid
I rigged up a frame, and it worked well. I would remove the light socket to reveal the outlet box that is presumably there in the wall or ceiling, and wire the wires directly to the romex supply, adding a proper cover for the box. Cobbling something into the socket would not be good practice or allowable by normal codes. Here I am talking about the 110v supply. This troffer gives out MUCH more light than the 60W bulb would give, and a dimmer is needed if you want less brightness. This unit optimally uses a special control called a 10 volt LED dimmer, requiring additional wires (low voltage)--very difficult for retrofitting because there won't be additional wires to the light switch in the wall. I put a small outlet box with the 10v dimmer control right up there beside the unit, and we get on a step-ladder to adjust it; the 10v dimmers are costly, and one can get one with a remote for even more. I didn't try using a standard in-wall dimmer that controls the 110v supply; those may also work to a degree, and you would just ignore the grey and purple little wires.

how is the comparison of 5000 lumens to amps

how is the comparison of 5000 lumens to amps
Asked by: Roger
You are trying to compare "apples to oranges". The amp draw (current) of a fixture is a function of the efficiency of the electronic driver circuit of a LED fixture and does not relate directly to the lumen output. The number, light color and quality of LED modules used determine the lumen output.

This is a fine product for its use as an in-ceiling-grid troffer or for a variety of creative surface mounts. I had success mounting a pair of 2 ft by 4 ft units up against ceiling beams, with a wooden frame around them actually holding them up. (I didn't try the special invisible surface-mount hardware, that many reviewers say is quite difficult to use.) My gripes concern poor instructions and documentation: a tiny picture with no words is very unclear how to use the little clips to hold it into the ceiling rails, and there is no information at all about the 10-volt dimmer control it needs and how the grey and purple 10-volt control wires work. Until 10-volt dimmer controls become widely known, the instructions should give information about them. In fact, a store clerk advised me on the dimmer to get, but it turned out to be the wrong one for this panel. It will also be nice when the line matures enough to come in different color tones: this, the only choice, is very bright white.

Flat panel, drop-in installations on grid ceilings, this LED troffer fixture provides the light equivalence of 3 48" fluorescent tubes. 7000 lumens of 4000K bright white illumination using only 73 watts. Like many LED fixtures, this is also dimmable when using the appropriate dimmer switch and circuit. If you do not have a grid ceiling but still would like to use this panel, it's easy enough to put together a frame to hold the panel in place for mounting. Likewise, this flat panet could be installed in a vertical position on a wall if needed. It will give you lots of even lighting, produces no hum, is not affected by humidity or low temperatures such as what you might find in a basement, or garage. I would not recommend its use in an attic though. I'm using this in my garage for additional lighting beyond what was previously installed.

I tried one and was nicely surprised. This is an edge lit panel that can be dimmed. As this is a commercial light it does not come with a cord or dimmer. I plan to use this in a totally different application. This will be used in photography. The light produced is very good for the type of macro work I do. Unlike the fixture that have lots of LED's, this fixture does not give multiple shadows that some people have a hard time with. I will be getting more of these very soon.

LED lights are the best. No more replacing those annoying florescent bulbs in those annoying drop down ceiling fixtures. Installation is very basic. Some little annoying issues such as the hole punch outs for the wires was a little hard and annoying to get out. Bent some of the outside. But other than that it worked as expected.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very good product but information inadequate I installed two side by side in a simple frame holding them up to ceiling beams. I figured out a troffer must be made to be supported by its edges, and was right about that. I wish there had been more info about mounting. Also lacking from the web description and box was the thickness of the panel itself, which is ½ inch. Finally, the electricals include small wires for 1-10 volt dimmer controls, but there is a total lack of information on what to get and how to hook it up. All it says is Connect the two dimming wires ... (purple and grey wires) if applicable. Nothing about the two other low voltage wires, red and blue; and nothing about which kinds of controls to obtain. This is relatively new technology, so please try harder to inform us, the smart DIY crowd.

I needed a shadow-free light for my lathe. It works great! I love the even light. The label says i's edge-lit, but you can't see any variation from side to side or from side to center. I did notice a couple of things that might be improved: The holes in the electrical box (which, by the way, is made of VERY thin metal) are not punched out as much as they should be, so you do a fair bit of deforming the box as you remove the knockout. You then, of course, have to go back and straighten everything out. Also, the hole is large for a 1/2" conduit connector. You can see in the pictures that there is actually a gap on one side. That makes tightening the nut a bit more difficult than it needs to be. Finally, I would like to see something in the instructions describing how the PWM dimming works. There are wires there, but the light defaults to full brightness and there is nothing to indicate what it takes to dim. I'm sure there are modules available and that's what they want you to use, but it would be nice to know it.

I like the color temperature and quality of the light. The panel measures 47-3/4" x 23-3/4" x less than 1/2" thick, with a power supply/electrical box on top of the short side. The power supply box/ electrical connection box measures 7-1/2" long x 3" wide x 1-3/8" tall. There are three wires for the power - black, white, and bare copper. There are two wires for 0-10 volt dimming - purple and gray. The electrical connection box has four 1/2" trade size knock outs.

It is very slim and low profile. I do like the look of it though. It is simple to install and is quite bright. I need 5 more of these for my garage now and I will be all set! I installed this one in the basement along with 3 other LED lights and this one is obviously brighter than the others but it is in my basement that I use as an exercise room so I don't care! :)
