The gray button is for testing shirt button type batteries. You stick the battery into the slot on the side of the tester then push down the button to get your reading. The tester should work unless it was dropped. Make sure you have the selector on the correct voltage.

NiMh batteries are rated at 1.2 V per cell so will read just a bit lower on the "Good Scale" than 1.5 V alkaline batteries. I have used the tester for NiMh batteries while keeping that in mind.
