Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for the question. This tester is only capable of detecting a single wiring error at a time. If there are multiple different wiring errors the tester will not give you a proper reading.

I always say simplicity breeds quality. This simple straightforward GFCI outlet circuit analyzer is everything you need to test a GFCI or a standard outlet. The directions are easy to understand. I tested all of the outlets throughout my house. Testing a GFCI was very easy. Press the test button and the GFCI should operate. If it doesn't operate the GFCI requires replacement. The LED indicators are layed out nicely and easy to understand. Nice physical size! I would recommend this product.

This GFCI tester does exactly what it is supposed to do. The LED readouts are easy to understand and the readouts come very quickly. The instructions are easy to understand and follow. The tester fits easily in your hand and is small enough to be slid into a pocket or tool belt. This tester is a good thing to have around the house to make sure your outlets are properly grounded.

This is the Commercial Electric GFCI tester, model CE-GFI6500. It tests both standard (non-GFCI) outlets as well as GFCI outlets. The interesting thing about this tester is, where most other similar testers have three indicators that light up under various wiring conditions—and you interpret the lights through a chart, this tester uses a single LED for each condition. You just read what it says next to the lit LED. In order to test the various wiring conditions, I created a test circuit where I can incorrectly wire a duplex receptacle on purpose. I connected the wires in appropriate ways as I went down the list as printed on the tester. When wired correctly, the fist LED (labeled “CORRECT” glowed Green. The next LED was labeled “OPEN GROUND”—the LED glowed RED. The third LED is labeled “OPEN NEUTRAL”—the LED glowed Red. The fourth LED is labeled “HOT/GND REV” (Hot and Ground are reversed)—the LED glowed Red. The last LED is labeled “HOT/NEU REV” (Hot and Neutral are reversed)—the LED glowed Red. If no LEDs light, either the Hot wire is open or there is no power going to the receptacle. In all cases, the tester worked as it’s supposed to (see Photos 1 though 5). To test a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), the instructions say to first use the test button on the GFCI to make sure it trips. Then you can proceed using this tester. Insert the tester into the GFCI and check that it lights the green LED labeled “CORRECT.” Now press the GFCI Test button—it should immediately trip the GFCI. This function worked correctly on all the GFCIs in my house. I like the single indicator style of this tester—it’s very easy and intuitive to use. And the fact that it tests GFCIs as well as standard receptacles is a bonus. It’s found a permanent place in my tool kit. The Home Depot website indicates that the tester comes with a lifetime warranty. However, the instructions included with the tester say that it comes with a one year warranty. I guess we’ll find out which is correct when it breaks.

I really like this circuit tester and would recommend getting it for any do it yourself kind of person or electrician. The unit is easy to read when you plug it into the outlet. It has the lights right on the side so you can read from the top or bottom of the tester. Also the potential wiring results are listed on both the top and bottom of the tester. You can either have a correct, open ground, open neutral, hot/ground reversed, or hot/neutral reversed. Additionally, if you receive no light return then you have open hot. So i like this because it is super easy to read and the form of the tester is easy to hold. It has a good design so your hand can hold it easily to plug into any outlet. I highly recommend this tester.

GFCI OUTLET CIRCUIT ANALYZER TESTER, for the price can save many headaches in outlets! Lights up bright and will Tests for 7 common wiring conditions on standard and GFCI protected circuits. Confirms hazardous ground conditions are present. Red light indicator flashes to warn of a bad ground at the outlet. Indicator is easier to identify than standard outlet testers. In the 80s, wish I had one, had a crack outlet and received a shock I never had forgotten!
