This COMMERCIAL ELECTRIC LOW VOLTAGE 200-WATT STAINLESS STEEL LANDSCAPE TRANSFORMER is easily a DIY project that even the novice installer can use to make it a professional looking landscape. The unit measures 13"x9"x5". It is made of corrosion resistant stainless steel and looks the part. Very easy installation process. It comes with all the mounting hardware needed and a screw template to make it easy to mount the screws that hold the unit in place. It has 2 different voltage output terminals depending on the gauge and distance of cable with lights you're using. It comes with a remote photo cell that allows for the lights to come on at dusk and go off at dawn. I have mine mounted under my deck and the photo cell run to the edge and it works flawlessly. I ran 14/2 cable and have currently run stair lights for now with 12 Landscape lights to come. It has a 200 watt limit and with all these lights, i still have room to add more. Wish I would have done this a long time ago.

Solid transformer, good for low wattage LED installations, could use more detail in the Use and Care Guide. We are using this transformer with 3 Watt LED fixtures, and 12 AWG wire, with the transformer located in the garage. The photocell wire runs through the same opening as the 12 AWG wire. Ultimately, our project will include two runs of wire, one run with five lights, and the other run with seven lights, for a total of 12 lights. At 3 Watts each, the lights will total 36 Watts (a very low total). We have connected a single run successfully. But we are not sure if we can successfully add a second run of lights to this transformer, as the Use and Care guide shows and describes only one run of lights, and the Q&A Answers are currently unclear about the possibility of either, A) connecting more than one wire to a tap (e.g., two wires inserted in either the 12V tap or the 15V tap), or B) connecting one wire to the 12V tap, while simultaneously connecting another wire to the 15V tap. If the Use and Care Guide could be revised to advise the user about the possibility of plugging more than wire into a tap, and/or using the 12V tap and the 15V tap simultaneously, it would be helpful. Now that LED lights are available at only 3 Watts each, running two or more wires is a desirable option.

The Commercial Electric Stainless Steel landscape transformer is built like a truck. It's multi-tap, meaning it has both 12v and 15v output ports available, although it has a total power rating of 200W. The quick-lock taps are simple to use, and provide plenty of room for 14ga or 16ga cable (I didn't have any 12ga around, but it looks like that should be no problem either). Light control can be by photocell, by timer, by photocell + timer, or by multiple times + photocell. Using the photocell eliminates the hassle of your lights coming on too late in the winter/too early in the summer.

I would give this Commercial Electric Low Voltage 200-Watt Stainless Steel Landscape Transformer a five stars if the photo sensor works better and the power wire is a bit longer. The power cord being too short makes installation location limited and the photo sensor activates when still daylight outside. Otherwise it works great with my new sets of LED landscapes lights. I am currently using it as turn on with photo sensor and power off at specific time. The casing is very durable and seems to be made of great quality.

This is a very good power supply for low-voltage applications for site lighting, including in-pool lighting, and small submersible pumps, but you need to dig much deeper into the limits of its capabilities to figure out how much load it can handle. I like this unit, and I recommend it, but with many clarifications. The wattage rating does not tell the complete story as one should never connect close to 200 watts of loads to the power supply. Although the recommended derating is NOT mentioned in the Use and Care Guide, the info on the box mentions that the voltage drop loss of the distribution wiring (due to the wire’s resistance) may consume 20 percent of the rated capacity. This effectively reduces the total connected fixture load to approximately 180 watts, although the package says that the limit should not exceed 160 watts—very conflicting math. I say approximately 180 watts because the total fixture load will depend on the length and gauge of the wiring—using 12 AWG wire will allow for the maximum usable load to be served. A label on the inside of the cover where connections are made says “TOTAL BULB USAGE NOT TO EXCEED 200 W MAXIMUM” adds to the conflicting information. This all is very confusing and incomplete information to understand—especially if you do not have the box in front of you and then, but it is still impossible to decipher. Save the box AND the Use and Care Manual for future reference, and then call Customer Service for any questions. There are 12 VAC and 15 VAC outputs. The only landscape lights I have seen are all 12 VAC and there is no explanation for why there is a 15 VAC output , but I guessed that it was for longer runs where the voltage drop in the wire would reduce the voltage at the fixtures to around 12 volts. A promptly answered call to customer service confirmed that my guess was right and also answered my question about whether both outputs can be used at the same time—the answer was yes: 12 VAC for the shorter runs and 15 VAC for the longer ones, as well as the total load, including wire resistance, does not exceed 200 watts. The input is 120 VAC and 1.86 A maximum which is protected by a resettable circuit breaker. The push-button reset is under the same flip-up panel as the output terminal block and photocell connector. The remote photocell cord is 60-inches (152 cm) long and the power cord is 36-inches (92 cm) long. The housing is all stainless steel that looks beautiful out-of-the-box but shows fingerprints easily. Plan on wiping it down after it is installed. Mounting hardware is included, as is a self-adhesive mounting hole template for the transformer support screws. The provided screws are electro zinc-plated steel. If mounted outside, I recommend substituting SS screws for mounting the SS case and plastic photocell holder for better long-term integrity and appearance. There is also a hole at the bottom of the housing for an extra screw for more secure mounting. The power supply is easy to install and program. It can be placed inside or outside but must be plugged into a GFCI receptacle. There is a choice of three on/off modes: 1) photocell turns on at dusk time setting turns off, 2) photocell turns on and off automatically at dusk and dawn, and 3) an off time followed by a second on/off time you can set. When the third mode is set, the photocell turns on at dusk and stays on until the set time; it then stays off on until the second time after which it comes back on and stays on until dawn. The packaging says that there are five modes so that must include manual ON and manual OFF modes. Although it is not mentioned, there must be a built-in battery that stores the clock and settings when power is lost, or turned off as with a switched, remote controlled or smart plug. A piece of important information that I found on the nameplate is that the unit is rated at Efficiency Level VI which is the most up-to-date Energy Star standard applicable to small AC to AC transformers with multiple outputs. The product weighs in at 10 pounds (4.54 kg) and was made in China.

This is a nice, stainless steel outdoor low-voltage electronic transformer. It has two back mounting holes on the back. It is 13 inches high, about 5 inches wide. There are 12 v and 15 v easy to use push terminals to attach clean-end wires. While rated at 200 watts, its functioning capacity is 160 watts due to electrical resistance through small wiring over distance. There is no way around this. Since it is an outdoor device, exposed to weather, function and warranty are important. This has a two-year warranty! It has a digital memory meaning if there is a power failure, your settings stay in effect. I don't know how long the settings stay in place without power but I was able to program it, take it outside, plug it in, and still have my settings. So that is nice. It appears that 12 v or 15 volt LED or incandescent bulbs (older lights) will work all at once with this transformer. So it is a no-fuss retrofit. This is nice but all my bulbs are 12 volt LED so this was not a factor for me but this versatility may be for others. There is a photocell or digital timer to control lighting. Easy to program, the transformer will handle my additional landscaping lighting. The cord is about three-feet long. The unit has some weight to it: 18.3 lbs according to its specs. It is easy to use, easy to program, reasonably priced, with a good warranty for an outside electric device, and it works. It is quiet. I am pleased with it. I recommend it.

This is not the typically ugly black rectangular box transformer but instead an attractive Stainless Steel work of art. OK, work of art may be an exaggeration but it does have very sleek lines and the stainless steel really makes it stand out as a high-end, high quality, and high-construction 200W landscape transformer manufactured by Commercial Electric. The install and setup were very easy and straight forward. No tools are needed thanks to the clamp style connector for the landscape light wire instead of the more common low-end screw connection. A real nice feature is the separate photo-cell which can be mounted up to 5 feet from the transformer giving greater flexibility on where to locate the unit (no concern of the unit turning on prematurely if located in a dark spot, just place the photo-cell where it is most beneficial). Overall, we are very happy with this unit.
