While trying to satisfy the requirements of both a contact and non-contact voltage measuring device, this item accomplishes both, but neither well. The instructions provided are somewhat convoluted and, in some cases, erroneous. This is a simple device that is generally used to quickly verify if circuits are live or not. A label on the tool instructs the user to test on a known live circuit first, yet the instructions give several optional methods of performing “self-tests”, one which is flawed by the variable of grip and skin moisture the other due to the wording of the instructions. The “switch off” self test, where on grabs the exposed tip with one hand and the side contact plate with the other only works if your skin is relatively moist and your grip firm. The other method, with the tool in the “on” (high or low sensitivity) position references “both green lights illuminated”….when there is only one green light. The choice of a green light (LED) as an indicator of voltage present is unfortunate, as the power industry generally considers green indicators to show an open or de-energized state. While the tool can be used in the “non-contact” mode, with the cap in place (covering the exposed conductive tip) the cap is not captive and could be easily misplaced. A white LED “flashlight” is incorporated (which requires the tool be in one of the two “on” modes (H/L). The contact tip is shaped much like a screwdriver, however, since the instructions make no mention of being used in this capacity, one must assume that to do so may damage the housing which secures the tip. As this tool lacks intuitiveness and repeatable response under varying conditions it is certainly not the best solution out there.

This product seems to work okay but the manual is really confusing so it is hard to tell if I’m using it correctly. On the switch there is an O, L & H setting. What do the different settings mean? Maybe off, low and high. Some examples of my confusion from the manual. On page 5 it says: “The red indicator light (B) illuminates indicating the presence of AC voltage.” And then: “Whenever neutral or earth (ground) is disconnected, the red light indicator light (B) will also illuminate…” So if the red light illuminates is it just AC voltage or disconnected neutral or ground? On the bottom of the same page it talks about “Testing AC Voltage using the non-contact method…”, but then it says to “…gently trace the tip (A) of the tester onto the wire.” So if you are touching the wire how is it non-contact? On page 6 it says: “To reduce the sensitivity, place your other hand onto the object you are testing.” Aren’t you testing a wire with AC voltage? Why would you want to place your hand on the wire? On page 7 the instructions say to replace the small watch type batteries you should: “Use a screwdriver to unscrew and remove the battery cover…” What you are actually doing is removing the whole side and the clip comes off too. Also be careful because the two screws are different. I would prefer a AAA battery and an easier way to change it but I suppose they take up more room. It is really inexpensive so I suppose you can’t expect too much.

I have been use to the old testers, those that you could touch a wire or a circuit and see what’s hot! And when mine broke it was time to see which could replace it! This is a good replacement for being traditional and is sensitive for finding touchless live connection!
        Nice Little Tester
This is a small tester, I would not use it in a panel/cabinet over 240 volts because your hands could be too close to live conductors. We used it on a hot water heater wiring and it was responsive letting us know there was power there. Once we opened the breaker the tester was silent. It worked like a much more expensive device. I would recommend it to a friend.

The cap won’t stay on I had to put a piece of electrical tape on it to keep it in place and it is the working end.
