Can they be wired in a series?

Asked by: Mack
To clarify on some of the previous answers, which are all correct: The electrical connectors on these have an additional slip connector on them that you can connect romex wire to and run to the next light. You can chain multiple lights together to avoid running extra wire from a central point. However this is not considered running in series since the power does not run through the light itself to get to the next light. It is parallel.

Can the quick connect push terminals combine aluminum and copper wires?

Can the quick connect push terminals combine aluminum and copper wires?
Asked by: Tom
Unfortunately most push-in quick-connect terminals are not approved for use with aluminum wire, rather for copper wire only. The included push-in connectors are likely not either. If possible, identify the manufacturer and read their specs online. Reason - aluminum is a lot softer than copper and the pressure clips in the connectors will "groove" the aluminum wire, and also aluminum wire expands and contracts with temperature changes, so either of these conditions will cause loose connections, which in turn is a potential fire hazard. A work-around: buy the Ideal Brand Twister Purple Wire Connectors, which are approved for Al/Cu (aluminum-to-copper) wire connections; extend the aluminum wire(s) with a short piece of copper wire to insert into the push-in connector; gently twist the aluminum wire(s) and the copper extension wire together and install the "Purple Twist", then insert the copper wire into the push-in connector. Repeat for both the black and white original aluminum wire(s). Another work-around is to twist off and discard the push-in connectors from the LED fixture wires and connect the LED fixture wires directly to the aluminum wires with a "Purple Twist". This is a simpler solution and saves space in the wiring junction box and doesn't require the purchase of any copper wiring. Repeat for both the black and white original aluminum wire(s). And of course, always match the wire colors, black-to-black, white-to-white, and bare/green-to-bare/green. On very rare occasions there may also be a red wire in the original wiring. This gets a bit more complicated, let's try to keep it simple. If there is a red wire, it is virtually always the "switch leg", the wire that goes to the light(s), from the wall switch. When a red wire(s) is present, then there will always be black and white wires too. The *original house wiring* black wires go together, capped with a separate wire connector ("wire nut"), and tucked/folded away in the junction box. Any *new* black wires from newly installed cables that go to new/added recessed lights are connected to the red wire, so that all the new/added recessed lights are controlled by the wall switch. Finally, all the white wires, including all the original house wiring white wires and the white wires going to the new/added recessed lights, all get spliced together. Assuming they are all copper and there are no more than three total, they can 'spliced together' by using the push-in connectors (IF they are copper wires). There's really no need to talk about more than three wiring cables because more than three cables will not fit in the junction box that comes with the recessed light fixture! Very important, the bare/green wires - these, if they exist in your original house wiring, MUST be connected together in the junction box by gently twisting and capping them with a separate wire connector ("wire nut"). The bare/green wires are the equipment grounding wires that are required to ground any metal surface in the electrical wiring system. There are no provisions to connect them to the recessed light junction box since it is plastic. Well I hope this helps and wish all success!

Would it be possible to use these lights in soffits located in a cold weather area like Illinois?

Would it be possible to use these lights in soffits located in a cold weather area like Illinois?
Asked by: Illinoiscustomer
Yes, they should work fine in a soffit. Just want to make sure rain and melting snow can’t reach them. The cold temps in winter shouldn’t make a difference. I have some installed on the ceiling of my covered front porch in Nashville, TN. Although not as cold, they have worked great even during temps in the teens. Even in your soffits, they will have a little extra warmth from your attic anyway.
