While the Shelves are made of manufactured wood, you wouldn't know it. The technique used makes the shelves feel and look like solid wood. Even the backing is made of a Thin Plywood like material. Very solid and sturdy and putting it together is easy.

"GENUINE WOOD VENEER" What a joke! Only the surface paper thin layer is wood, all the boards are particle board. You spend three times the money for a particle board bookcase with 2/3 for the paper thin wood finish. I was expecting at least plywood construction with solid wood inserts, neither. But does look good and seems sturdy. Did not want to assemble. No hassle return to local HD store.

Complete failure
The box was not damaged upon arrival. But after opening the box to start assembly, most every piece of wood had a scratch or gouge mark. I thought at first that the scratches would not show, if on the inside of the cabinet. But then a side piece had a trim piece glued onto it. The glue had apparently dried out and the trim had fallen completely off the main piece. This could not be fixed. Most every piece of wood had some defect. I stopped assembly and quit. I would not recommend this piece, and I am afraid to purchase a replacement from the same company, it was so bad. I will look elsewhere for a bookcase.

Poor Workmanship`

On the plus side, they are easy to assemble. On the negative side - every\thing else. Made of particle board with a thin slice of veneer glued on, the unit comes with a lot of excess glue to get off and poorly filled nail holes. The worst part if that on the edges (say the front of the shelves) there are large gaps between the veneer strips where they were fit poorly. Glue shows through, giving them a very work, poor-quality look. Considering that we had looked and looked for the right shelves to create a library (we bought five units) my wife wanted to put the best spin on it. She said it makes it look like a really old set of shelves that have the edges chipping and worn out from decades of use. Okay - but I wanted new and classy. These would have been a good buy for $100 at a discount store, but a big disappointment at the price and with my high expectations. And apparently don't try to load a photo of a negative review. I had two to show the poor workmanship, but they won't load in either chrome or Explorer in less than 30 minutes (they are well under the supposed 5 mb limit).

Not worth the price

Not worth the price. I purchased two shelves and both had multiple chips on panels and the fascia on some of the shelves needed to be re-glued. The fascia was not attached to the shelf and you could see where it had been glued and nailed- in fact, the nails were still in the fascia. For this price, I shouldn't have to grab a bottle of elmers glue and do repairs on a brand new product.

Purchased 2 of these. Product was damaged in many areas. Centers on both were not attached when receiced. Also the backs of both were very warped. I think if I had to do it again I would get these built in a cabinet shop.

This is a very nice and sturdy bookcase, especially for the price. One piece was slightly damaged and their customer service quickly sent a replacement. Here are a few tips I thought might help others when putting this together: • Buy a set of those magic sliders to put underneath. This bookcase is HEAVY, so the sliders will make your life so much easier. • Take a damp cloth to wipe down each piece as you take it out of the box to remove the Styrofoam that has a lot of static cling and other smudges. • Look at the pictures of the parts closely. They are not reversible, so save yourself time by identifying which end is at the top versus bottom. For example, the outer side panels have dowel holes close to the top whereas they are several inches from the bottom. • Label each item with its part letter (A, B, etc.), as well as which end is up. • You are assembling the bookcase “face down.” Remember this as you’re putting it together so you can figure out which item you’re looking at and how it will end up in the finished product. • The side molding (Letter K) and the fixed shelves (Letter C) create lips. This caused me the most grief as I installed them wrong and had to re-do. The lips need to protrude inward for the sides (i.e., they will be flush on the outside of the unit) and protrude downward for the fixed shelves (i.e., a book should slide off the shelf, not be caught by the lip). And here are some notes I took on the actual installation steps which may help: • STEP 3: This step is telling you to put the wooden dowels all the way through the hole. This is the middle section and the dowels are used to attach the fixed shelves to the middle, so they should stick out just a little bit from both sides of the divider. • STEP 6: The diagram does not mention you’re working with the smaller divider molding (Letter L). Also, it says “Label: This Side Up.” Don’t mistake this for the actual part which has an actual sticker which says this (Letter F); the instructions are expecting you to write that label yourself. Notice how the metal fasteners at the top and bottom are different distances from the edge – this will help you know which end to insert. • STEP 7: You’re attaching the side molding (lips). You’ve got the outer sides of the bookcase facing down and the dowels and metal fasteners facing up. This equates to down=outside of bookcase and up=inside of bookcase. The lips will be flush with the outside and protrude inside. So in this diagram, you are making the molding flush with the floor. • STEP 8: This is another place where they’re telling you to write your own label. Also, for this step, the lip of the molding is centered and is protruding slightly from both sides. • STEP 10: This is the section that I got completely wrong. Up to this point, pictures were depicted from top left to bottom right. But in this picture, the left is now the bottom. Remember this when inserting the fixed shelves…the lip needs to point downward once the bookcase is complete, so remember which end is the bottom. • STEP 11: Remember that the orientation has changed. Look at the dowel placings in the lower left-hand corner of the picture…this is the bottom of the bookcase, while the dowels in the upper right-hand corner are close to the edge which indicate the top. • STEP 13: This step says it’s important to not lift the unit until the bank panel is installed. But it wasn’t square on the floor and I needed to stand it up to slightly “rock” it from left to right to get it square. To make it easier for me, I attached the back panel with a single screw along only one of the sides in the middle. I then had another screw close by (well, in my mouth) and the screwdriver in my pocket. That way when I stood it up, it was partially attached so once I rocked the bookcase a little bit to make it square, I was able to insert another screw on the opposite side. I then laid it back down to finish up.

I bought the double bookshelf from another retailer 8 years ago. In that time I have moved twice & I am impressed with how sturdy & good looking they continue to be! I have a serious library & other cheaper bookshelves would bow under the weight of my books- not this bookshelf! The shelves are solid wood & very sturdy. They are adjustable and the unit is just a beautiful piece of furniture. I get complements on them whenever people come over. The only con is the price- too high!
