Questions & Answers

will it work as a supply fan wall mounted ?

will it work as a supply fan wall mounted ?
Asked by: Jose
Update to my previous answer: Another way to get the bottom 1/2 of the louvres to shut with a wall installation is by getting a small spring from a hardware store and using it instead of a counterweight. You will have to buy a few different springs, find the one that provides just enough tension to close the louvre when the fan is off and still allows the louvre to open when the fan is running, and then return the other springs. I also tried this myself and it works.

Can you install this fan on a wall instead of a ceiling? I have vaulted ceilings, so ceiling mount won't work for me.

What is the minimum thickness when installed? I have a ceiling rafter that will make for a tight fit. I see 11 inches height listed, but wonder if that accurately reflects the thickness of the corner to the inside face of sheetrock.
Asked by: kw
The fan needs to go in the ceiling Joist. It cannot go in the rafter because there won’t be enough space to evacuate the air. If you have space in between the ceiling joists and the rafters, as you do in most all trusses, you can mount this fan even in between 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 ceiling joists.

I used HP 260 tape, which survives the heat in the attic well. I replaced a failed 30 inch fan, which was not sealed well (there were gaps the way it was seated to the space between living room ceiling and attic floor). This turned out to be very important, because now the 24 inch fan is pulling more air than previously the 30 inch fan did. Also, using rubber gaskets and securing each seat on the wooden beams with Household Goop made a major difference in sound dampening – the new fan is much quieter than the old fan. Very important: replace those low quality sheet metal screws holding the inner frame off the fan motor and fan blades with bolts with locking nuts and put household Goop over all the bolts so that they cannot shake lose for decades to come. Then you have an excellent fan for a fraction of the cost of what quiet and powerful fans cost today.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely poor workmanship I am shocked at the lack of quality with this product. I had it shipped directly to my home, it arrived 2 days early. Upon opening the box I found the unit covered in dirt and grime. The two mounting "L" brackets where bent and twisted. They where both attached to the wood box with hex screws, each with a washer that was two sizes to big. Following the directions proved impossible. The brackets where so badly tweaked that I couldn't get the fan assembly clear of the shroud...I had to remove the motor instead. I then disassembled the brackets and did my best to straighten them. I remounted them and it became apparent why the brackets where bent, to make them fit the motor! This must have been assembled by an 8 year old. I had reached my limit...back in the box it goes. Point of note...there was no sign of any damage to the box, it wasn't even bent. This unit was put in the box like this. CoolMaster...you guys have some serious quality assurance issues that need addressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Its works, but problems before finally getting it installed. When the fan arrived, the motor and blades were loose in the box. The motor is supposed to be fastened to the metal brackets with four screws. Three of them were completely off and one was hanging by a thread. Fortunately, the blades and motor did not get damaged in transit. The way the brackets were attached to the wooden box with screws is a poor design and would most likely loosen with the vibration. I took the screws out and replaced them with nuts, bolts, washers, and lock washers. The instructions are confusing, but I was able to figure it out. It took quite a bit of work to build the framework to seal off the air from the attic. I bought a fan years ago which had a better design. That one had a cowling that fit over the fan and sealed off the air from the attic so you did not have near as much work. . Also, they tell you to seal all the cracks with caulk, but neglect to tell you there will have to be a hole for the wire to go through. This was installed in the garage. Once installed, the fan is working well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from works like it should but quality isn't there must do work to it to make it work out of the box fan works like it should only after you do additional bracing. Was easy to hookup and I thought the installation was easy to read and understand. when I first turn it on I think it would have destoryed itself in a 30 seconds if I never turned it off right away. I had to brace the angle tin (22gauge) that mounts the motor to the box frame. Then I was able to actually run it for awhile but it was extremly loud and it would have busted the mounts eventually. I then used 3/8" rubber on each side of the motor between the mouting brackets and it is whisper quiet, softest running fan I have ever heard. There is no vibration and extremely quiet. But it needs alot of help to get this fan in working order, will not work out of the box unless you do alot of work to it. I really like mine but I had to do 2 or 3 hours of bracing and finding out where the noise was coming from. Motor gets very hot in use but that maybe okay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the money I'm glad I bought this fan, it was easy to install by following the instructions. It's not noisy at all, in fact it sounds just like a standard floor type fan. It definitely moves the air thru the house very well. Originally when I opened the box, it was missing the wall switches and Wall Plate that was supposed to be included, but just a quick call to Home Depot customer service corrected that. They immediately contacted the manufacturer which in turn Fedex'd me the missing parts. Overall my experience was great and I have already recommended this fan to my co-workers and My brother. We'll worth the $199.99 I paid. Not only cools down the house, but it also cools down the Attic quickly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Choice I was shopping around for a good WHF and went through different reviews, I got this fan from Home Depot on line and got it installed couple of weeks back. I am happy with it. Pl read the reviews through different sources to reduce noise. I have added foam to reduce noise and a timer for ease of operation. Before purchase, please check whether your attic vent has adequate ventilation (calculators are available in the internet) to prevent returning the product which is not only inconvenience to the seller and manufacturer but also loss to them. Any inconvenience and loss incurred to them is also to us as price will be jacked up to compensate the loss. I very strongly believe that good amount of research is a must before any purchase..Less ventilation at attic would overload the fan motor. This WHF comes with wooden box, two speed switch and a on/off switch. I engaged an installer and paid $220.
