Questions & Answers

Is the bottom of this shade weighted to help keep it from flying about in wind?

Asked by: Matilda
If you don't install the lower brackets, they will blow in the wind. Having said that, I have three of these and while they blow a bit in the wind, it is not an issue - I have not installed the brackets and probably will not.

The 4 ft. long wand is too short for my application. Is it's construction such that a capable handyman (me) can increase the length by a couple of feet?

The rod is metal with hook at one end that connects through a eye on blinds with a flexy folding handle thing on other end that makes it easier to roll up and down.Don't know if info helps.I love the blinds on my screen porch.

This review is long overdue, but I felt I needed to say how pleased I am with this product. I bought 2 of these in Arizona. The back of our home faced west and it was not uncommon for the temperatures to be 120+ degrees on our balcony. We used them every day and they held up for 2 long, hot summers. In 2016 we moved to Florida and our screened lanai is also on the west side of the house. We also have two large sliding doors on the west side, so they get the hottest of the afternoon sun. We're going into our 3rd summer here in Florida and the blinds still look like new. I use them every day during warm weather. They help keep the indoor and outdoor areas cool. This is a GREAT product! There is plenty of light and still enough air circulation from the sides and underneath the blinds. One of them is just a little "Stretched" on one side now, perhaps from me fastening them too tight. I do use care to roll them up in stormy weather and strong winds. I just rinse off with the hose to clean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product with some issues We get extreme afternoon Arizona sun on our patio in the afternoon. After reviewing custom options which were far too pricy this 96 x 96 seemed like a logical choice. My local HD had it in stock so I could get my project started immediately. Installation is easy and intuitive. Make sure you have an assistant to help in the installation. The Coolaroo fabric matched our patio furniture and is of high quality. The length of the shade was perfect for our application, but here is one issue, the crank handle is far too short for a shade of this length, only 36" long for a 96" shade? (suggest that handles of varying lengths be offered depending on the shade length). The tie-down end cap bungees are far too short, but I fixed that with a home brew bungee extension. Additionally, the end caps pulled out, but that was solved with a Super/Crazy Glue infusion on each end cap. The hardware is of good quality and overall, after overcoming the issues, this purchase was a great value.

However, the bungees were not usable for our area, so we had to purchase two tent stakes, then had to use regular automotive bungees (small), and that will work fine. Your bungees will only work for places where wood exists.

I've had three of these hung up outdoors for a complete season now. They receive full afternoon sun (and get a little wet when it rains, too) on our porch / deck. They great provide privacy into our space - but allow us to see out with ease. We really like not having to untangle multiple cords and wrapping excess cord around cleats. The up & down mechanism is smooth and easy to operate with the included offset crank handle / hook. The bungee cables and clips are a nice plus to help keep shades from blowing around in a gentle breeze when extended, but it is unrealistic to expect anything not securely anchored with screws to hold when the wind kicks up. Installation of the pair of mounting bracket is pretty easy too. You can swap which end to crank up and down from as well as securing to either a vertical or horizontal surface by repositioning the mechanism on the mounting bracket.. Once you've decided where to hang - carefully measure distance between the brackets and use the bracket's mounting holes as a template on the mounting surface. Use a drill, small drill bits & phillips driver bits to secure the brackets to building / overhang with the supplied screws. If you're planning to butt one shade against another - there will be about 2" of space between them which may be a deal breaker for you.. In my opinion, these shades are *ideal* to fit openings that are equal to - or a little narrower than the shade material. Mount them either: 1) in back, 2) in front or 3) above the opening (as opposed to in the opening) if your openings are a little narrower than each shade. I fully expect that these will far outlast the flimsy, cord-operated, mini nylon-tube type roman shades we used to replace every few years from HD (he only plus was that they could be trimmed easily with a saw at home) These are more like fabric. I think cutting (even with a sharp blade such as a razor) would make them susceptible to fraying. FYI: When we bought these, you could also have the option to have them cut to a specific width (length, too?); but the price nearly doubled. Consider staggering or overlapping the locations of the shades slightly for an easy way to save the costs of custom sizes.

The shade itself is nice and provides good protection against the bright sun here in Texas. However, beware of the added cost as follows. The item is supplied with a very short (3.5 foot) crank rod. Note that in the photo on the Home Depot website the rod looks longer than that, so the photo is misleading. Remember that the shade itself is 8 feet long so the short rod supplied reaches less than half way. When hung on our outdoor patio, the rod was well out of reach and we had to stand on a stepladder to get to it. We were able to order a 6 foot rod on the Coolaroo website, but with shipping, Coolaroo charges $36.91 for the rod. In effect, this adds 28% to the cost of the shade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice blind, good quality. We got free delivery, it comes in a 10-1/2 foot cardboard tube. I kept the tube thinking there has got to be some use for it. Instructions are simple and suggest it takes 2 people to install, but with a little ingenuity, one person can put it up in about an hour. I drove in a couple of 6" gutter spikes into the wall to hold it into the position where I wanted to mount it. I sat it on top of the spikes. That way no measuring was necessary. I marked the cranking bracket hole slots, drilled some pilot holes and then mounted that bracket firmly. I slid the blinds into the bracket, then went to the snap-in end and loosely mounted that bracket to allow to allow for slight adjustment. Once it was fitted up I snugged up the screws, and voila, it was mounted. Then I removed the spikes and it was ready to roll, literally. Very good quality, it works great. It's semi-transparent, so you don't really loose your view. I put it up to block the winter winds on our patio and it does a good job, just make sure you use the bungees at the bottom to hold it in place. It lowers and raises with ease and it's a very nice looking blind. The fabric seems very durable and I expect it will last many years.
