I don't know how to tell if it does what it says it does! I suppose I'd have to bury one treated post and one untreated post next to each other at the same time and come back in ten years to report any difference. As it is, it only was money and effort spent to make me feel better that my fence posts will last longer than they otherwise would have, in theory. Listening to other reviews, I was prepared for the harsh smell. I applied it with gloves and a respirator. It goes on as a lovely brown. It's thin so it will run/drip. The color "took" differently on different types of woods, and lightened variably after drying/absorbing.

Smell, dilutions, variety of uses.
First of all, Copper-Green comes in about 3 versions: Brown colored, Green? In a white container, Clear/water-based in a white container. I have only used the brown which is easy to see as it applies full-strength a black oil or cappaccino color but can be diluted which lightens the color. Technically the water-based clear version is best for indoors and less smelly but I didn't know about it before. It's also more $ and I don't know if you can dilute it. I have used this stuff quite a bit on a house in Utah which had termites due to a roof leak. I started repairing and remodeling the home. Some areas I sprayed existing wood, others I thinned it and sprayed new lumber outside and installed it in walls after drying. The MSDS isnt clear as to the seriousness of the vapors while drying but is smells so bad that I recommend thinning it and covering with sheetrock and paint asap. Be aware the risk of open flames. The bottle says Use Full Strength, but the MSDS says, use full-strength for ground burial and the less ground and sunlight contact the more you can dilute it, up to 29gal of thinner to get 0.4% for use in weather and sunlight protected areas, which would be like in your walls, floors, ceilings. I didnt need 30gals so I used it thinned with 3gals for a total of 4gals for $50 and still get higher potency than needed. Many people ask about the smell. It smells really bad and a lot of it's fumes indoors gave me a minor headache. It is as strong or stronger than coffee isles at the store only a chemical-type of smell. It is not an appetizing smell. For me, I think most coffee stinks, in most cases being way too pungent but way more tolerable than this stuff. Maybe kin to a smelly sourdough, or something? Diluting and especially drying lumber outside is the best smell solution. Go to H.D. and smell the containers and realize it will be at least 10x stronger once opened. About the same time I saw it on the shelf I could smell it and none of the containers were leaking and it stunk up my car all the way home. I've seen so many homes with termites that it's a matter of when you will get termites. Treat your foundation regularly with pesticides and Termidor is the ultimate defense as it infects one termite and kills the entire colony and is guaranteed to last 10yrs. Color: the Brown version is cappaccino at full strength and after a long time will fade to a light green tint. Diluted with paint thinner to 4 gallons it turned an orange-ish color like the orange landscape timber or similar to pressure treated lumber.

We re-purposed an old PT wood deck that was about 6 or 7 years old. The wood was weathered and grey but straight and in reasonable shape and used it to construct a water harvesting stand for an IBC tote, that would be exposed to the elements. I soaked all the exposed end-grain for the 4x4 posts in a shallow pan for 24 hours. This preservative wicks up the wood well. The label says not to use it as a stain. It will fade over new PT wood (over a week or two) but generally leaves a nice aged patina behind over time. The flower box was out of new 1x PT lumber, before and about two weeks after. It matches the weathered hitching post fairly well. Some of the green in the PT wood still comes through but the brown preservative does dull it. I flooded all surfaces with a chip brush (don't bother with foam...they get tore up too easily) and keep working it in until a dull shine (the wood will continue to soak up the excess.) It does have a strong odor that will linger (best I can describe is like a strong animal musk). Keep it off your clothes, use nitrile gloves and wash up afterwards and it fades with time but takes a good while. On a plus side, spiders, bugs and birds have completely avoided both structures. I used a full gallon on these two projects and was exceptionally liberal with application. I expect (hope) these two projects will last a very long time.

It is a little difficult to rate a product one month after use, considering that it is supposed to prevent rot and decay for 10-15 years, but I will rate the product based on the purchase experience and ease of use. The product is obtained conveniently through Home Depot by on-line order with In-Store pick-up. I purchased a 10 ft. section of 5in DWV PVC (unfortunately not available at HD), cut it in three sections and installed caps to create three 33in. long tubes for treating 4in. posts. Each holds about 2 gallons (fill with post in container to avoid overfilling) and I would have to add 1/4 to 1/3 gallon between posts after each post soaked for 24 hours. You should figure 1/4 gallon per post with 24 hour soak, although some will absorb more and others less. I never drained the tube. I simply swapped posts with tube filled. I used a plastic trash bag and some scrap THHN wire to create a boot over the top of the PVC tube to reduce evaporation. To account for evaporation, I added a 1/4 gallon of diesel to the tube after the sixth post was treated in each container. As others have said this stuff is stinky. The stinker the better, as I always say! With three tubes going, I treated 60 posts in under three weeks, so plan ahead and start treating early. I treated to 30in even though my bury depth will only be 24in. It is important to fill higher than the proposed bury depth because the fill level will drop as the posts absorbs the CUnap. While the capillary effect will draw the CUnap up the post, the higher hydrostatic pressure will help to force it in the upper section of the post. Once each post was finished, I turned the upside down and allowed the CUnap to drain up the post. One last thing, Make sure your posts are dry. I stored mine out of the weather for three weeks prior to treatment.

Great product that has worked well for me on exterior cedar trim wood located in areas prone to decay! I used this product originally about 10 years ago and the treated wood is still in great condition. Treated some additional wood recently.

Use the kiln dried wood. It soaks in so well. This product is great. Takes a little longer to dry totally and it does have an odor but I prefer using this product rather than using pretreated wood. It takes longer but it is a lot prettier wood when done. You need to wash clothes after and take a shower as the smell stays for a while. Always use gloves when working with wood treated with this product , wet and dry.

            Great product
Excellent product for preserving exterior wood. Have used it many times. Just be careful of the smell as it lingers for about one to two weeks, but worth putting up for this time to get a good result. Easy to apply and advise once every one or two years, depending on your climate, for a long lasting effect.

Beware it turns your wood green not brown. However, it did get rid of the termites. I wound up liking the green color but if color is an issue for you make sure you sample a board before spraying all of your wood.

Easy to use. Clean up is a snap.
This product is easy to use and take care of even over a long duration project. I cannot say how well it preserves wood, because this is the 1st time I've used it, but it does penetrate the p.t. boards I used it on. Starts off dark but quickly fades as it soaks into the wood. Very easy to apply and water clean up. I used it on all cut surfaces and on older structural members. Highly recommend to this point.

Kind of hard to rate this product when I just used it and don't have any long term data. However, if you are bothered by odors, this product might not be for you. A month after application, I can still smell it whenever I go outside on the deck.

It is too early to rate this product, after all it is to prevent wood rot and bug damage that happens over an extended period of time. I hope that it will preform as well as advertised, I know that doing nothing to your post does not work! I gave it an average rating for my expectations of doing the job of preservation.

This is an excellent wood preserving product. It goes on smoothly because it is thin. it soaks right into the wood grain. I like how easily the paintbrush washes off with soap and water..it is just what i was looking for to preserve outdoor wood.
