Hello Deb, We would not suggest cutting off the few remaining leaflets at this time. It is best to see if the plant stabilizes and sends out any new growth in the short term. There may be a root issue involved here also and if so, then cutting off the remaining foliage may lead to its demise. Best to keep on the moderately dry side now and place in an area with bright diffused light. We hope this helps!

Is this plant good for forming a hedge ?

Asked by steve September 13, 2016

Hello! The Schefflera Amate is not well suited as a typical hedge plant. They become tree like in maturity and can grow to heights of 8’ up to 20’ plus. As they grow and mature they will tend to shed their lower leaves and have more of a tree standard type form and hence do not maintain a hedge like form from the base up. If they were planted on 2’ to 3’ centers in a row the initial effect would be hedge like but as growth occurs the effect would have more of a semi open wind break appearance. They will perform well outside in a tropical or subtropical environment where winter temperatures do not dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. On another note there is a relative of the Amate known as Schefflera Arboricola which is a dwarf form. The variety known as Trinette is highly variegated and can be maintained as a hedge with proper and timely pruning to maintain the desired form. The Trinette has a much slower growth rate and more compact foliage than Amate and will grow to 4’ to 8’ plus in maturity. Hopefully this is helpful. Thank You for your inquiry!

Can this be planted outside in full shade in Arizona!

The Amate can be planted outside if the temperature in your climate zone does not fall below 45 degrees fahreneit. Otherwise it can be container grown outside but will need to be brought inside during cold snaps to protect from frost, freezing, or overly chilling conditions.

Can I replant it outside or does it have to stay indoors

Do these bloom

Answer

Hello! Yes Schefflera var. Amate does flower as the plant matures with proper care and conditions. They typically need to reach a height of 10 to 12 plus feet beforehand. The reddish colored flowers emerge on long erect racemes followed by fleshy berries. Thank you for your inquiry!

Hello, Replant or up pot the 8 3/4" Amate into a 12" diameter container. It should be approximately 12" deep as well. Typically when up potting, it is best to go to the next size up such as a 10" into a 12" etc. Use a good quality potting media that is formulated for foliage plants. Thank you, Delray Plant Co.

I spent a long time trying to decide how to spend a Christmas gift card and I chose this plant and the ficus pandurata from Home Depot/Delray, based on the reviews. I haven't even gotten home yet and my husband just sent me pictures of the boxes delivered UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!! He had to take them out and put them back together. I am VERY disappointed!!! This cannot be how these plants are supposed to be delivered. I am very unhappy. Not worth the risk.
