A:Â Commonly done in the fall because people wait and want it done before the winter frost. Actually it's best to seal cracks in the spring when the cracks are at their widest.

Excellent crack filler. You just have to make sure you heat it until it's real runny and work fast. Make sure you keep stirring it as you heat it. Otherwise it'll overheat and damage some of it and not heat consistently throughout. It has poor heat transfer properties. Difficult to cut it into smaller pieces. Next time we'll heat a machete with a propane torch and hope it slides right on through.

It arrives the size of a small bed pillow. It's very dense and pliable. We used a 1 - 1.5 quart thick aluminum pot to melt this stuff in. then we used 2 locking pliers to hold and pour the tar-like molten material from the pot. The issue and the difficulty is breaking off pieces of the material to fit in the pot. First, I froze the material and used a small sledge and cold chisel to break hunks off 'the pillow'. We heated the pot to 380 degrees in our gas BBQ with the lid closed. I used an infrared thermometer from HF to check the temp of the melting material. Using a sledge and cold chisel on a frozen 'pillow' worked, but was very, very difficult. Tomorrow I will heat the blade of a straight shovel with a torch and cut the 'pillow' with the very hot shovel. In spite of the difficulty in obtaining the small pieces needed, I believe this is the way to go if you have significant cracks to seal. I have about 160 feet of cracks and I will have about a third of the 'pillow' left over for the future. I filled all cracks to within 1/4 of the surface with sand before applying this sealant.
