Can this bulb be used in a covered outdoor enclosed porch light?

Asked by: JStevens
The manufacturer states that the bulb can be used in damp conditions. Since it generates almost no heat, I don't see why you can't use it as a porch light in an enclosed fixture.

Customer Reviews

30/60/100W Equivalent Soft White (2700K) A21 3-Way LED Light Bulb is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 691.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy Cree bulbs. Their failure rate is high We bought, about 40 Cree bulbs from Home depot and 300 LED tubes and other led bulbs, from Alibaba - for our office. This type and the flood version. Cree bulbs were more expensive than other chinese brands I could buy on Amazon but I bought Cree, because of their brand name. I expected them to be of superior quality. Some of the chinese bulbs failed (as to be expected) but others are working amazingly well. 298 out of the 300 LED tubes from china are working perfectly, after one year. Unfortunately, the failure rate was high. Some started flickering. Others became dull. A few stopped working. Very annoyed, I wrote to Cree. They did send me some replacement bulbs and some were the wrong type. It was not worth pursuing this. I bought other brands. AVOID CREE BULBS. Btw, most LED bulbs are not meant to be used in enclosed fixtures. I didn't use any of the CREE bulbs in enclosed fixtures.. I did use some philips bulbs in enclosed fixtures and they seem to be working fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from lasted 3 months I'm hoping this is an isolated situation. Bought 2 of these bulbs along with 2 floor lamps. Purchased September 16, 2014. Went to turn it on today, nothing! swapped other bulb to make sure it wasn't the lamp. It's the bulb. I've had hit and miss luck with these LED bulbs. They claim to last for 10-20 years, but my experience with them is that they've not lasted more than a year or two. Granted, I'm only a few years into this experiment, and I'm certainly not looking for 20 years out of a bulb... i'd actually be amazed, but 2 + months with infrequent use is just unacceptable. It wouldn't be so bad but it says that I have to mail this back to the company, so I'm likely going to spend half the value of the bulb shipping this back to the manufacturer. At worst, they should let you print out a pre-paid shipping label for something that shouldn't be defective. I'm going to give a shot at going to Home Depot to see if I can swap it out, otherwise I guess it's the mail for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I've now had 4 fail I've purchased 5 of these bulbs and I've had 4 failures so far. I exchanged the first two that failed at Home Depot, they were very nice about that, and one of the replacements has now failed. In 3 of the cases if failed as many have described where it failed to light up after having been run for a few hours at the highest setting. The other failure was a bulb that flickered on the medium setting. I have also purchased 3 of the Phillips 3 way bulbs and all of those are still going strong. All bulbs were used in a lamp with a shade that is open on top and bottom so there isn't an issue of heat buildup due to a enclosed fixture. I plan to ask Home Depot if I can simply exchange for the Phillips for all future failures. I really wanted to like these as they are very efficient and when they are working the quality of light is very good. Cree obviously has a lot of work to do here to improve the durability of these bulbs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from EXCEEDINGLY POOR QUALITY I purchased two Cree 5,000K LED 100 watt Daylight bulbs for an overhead fixture. I loved the fact that the lumens was high - 1,600. I purchased them on 12 January 2016 at a Home Depot. They were only turned on for approximately 3 hours total. Less than two weeks after installation, one of the bulbs no longer works. I did test to make sure the bulb had good contact. I replaced the Cree bulb and the replacement worked fine. At this point I am returning both Cree bulbs tomorrow as I cannot afford to waste over $21 per bulb. Will not purchase any product by this company again. I did call the customer service at Cree. They were not interested in any personal information but just general info on the bulb purchase date and tracking number. Told them I was returning it to HD. One reviewer stated he/she could not get a refund. I live 50 miles from HD and called tonight to ask about returning and was told I could and get a credit back on my credit card. Very disappointed in this product. So much for "assembled in the USA".

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Starts out bright, but doesn't last. Fresh out of the packaging and into the lamp, this appears to be an excellent product. It turns on instantaneously, it's bright, and produces little to no heat. Unfortunately, the good stops there. The 30/60/100 bulb and the 100W bulbs burn out in a matter of weeks to 4 months with very little overall usage. I've bought many of these and all have the same results. I have a stack of bulbs to return to CREE. In contrast (and to set my expectations), I installed twelve par20 50w LED competitor bulbs in an outdoor environment in 08/2010. These bulbs are lit from dusk to dawn. In 5 years, I have only had to replace one bulb. This is where the bar is set for LEDs. CREE has a long way to go and should be a bit embarrassed with their performance. I've given it the lowest rating. A product designed to last years should not consistently fail within weeks to 4 months.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy Within 2 days, the 2 bulbs burned out. The bulbs lasted only 2 years, with a 10 year warranty.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice and bright and dimmable but expensive. Needed to find a 'green' dim-able light bulb with a good 'punch' for my wife's work area. As is common, as we all get older, we need more light and a 65W bulb was just not getting the job done. Well, this one sure does get the job done - partly because the color temperature is a nice, crisp white and partly because we can crank it up all the way to 100W if needed. We will, if the lifetime lives up the specifications (we have had 1 month so far), save energy and money in the long run. In the short run ... well, it cost a lot of money!! It does, however, look like a classic light bulb and has a nice light distribution. The bulb's outer shell is, however, quite fragile. I cracked mine right off the bat when I dropped it (in the original packaging) a foot or less. They do have a membrane around the shell so it didn't shatter. And, because the shell is just a 'converter' for the internal LED emitters, it still works fine. I have a 10 year warranty so I'm keeping that on hand.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 50% Failure Rate, slightly odd light quality I thought I had found the near-perfect 100-watt LED bulb: relatively inexpensive, small enough and light enough (in weight) to use in fixtures that other 100-watt LEDs were too bulky or heavy for. I bought 3 daylight & 3 soft-white bulbs. One went dead within 5 minutes. Another 2nd lasted a sum total of probably 4 hours. A 3rd lasted a sum total of probably 1000 hours (Still 1/5 of its rated life.) Each was in a different fixture on a different circuit, & none were enclosed or used with a dimmer. Cree grudgingly agreed to replace the bulbs, but I have to ship them the dead ones, and they implied it must somehow be my fault! The light quality of the daylight bulb seems "off"; the soft-white is good but not perfect. Still, if these were reliable, they would be a great value & the first practical 100-watt LED bulb. I sure hope the reliability improves - I would buy a boatload.
