Questions & Answers

Can this light bulb be used in a fully enclosed light fixture (ceiling)?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Chris
I have used mine, enclosed in an enclosed overhead fan fixture for years (fan is rarely used). The enclosure/globe is 4" high and 8" in diameter. I can imagine an LED bulb overheating in a tight, enclosed place, will shorten its life but I haven't seen one fail yet. I have been using LED bulbs in enclosed ceiling fixtures since 2012 and none have failed. I have seen LED bulbs take a minute to warm up from a dim start in very cold outdoor fixtures.

Is there a delay when this bulb is switched on?
Asked by: Anne
Yes, the newer Crees have a noticeable turn-on delay. Most of my house is lit by the older style Cree bulbs (the kind with the fins around the base), which had no perceptible turn-on delay. I purchased and installed several of this style, but then removed them because they don't come on at the same time as the older bulbs. I replaced them with the Philips clear-glass bulbs, which also do not have a delay. It's disappointing, because I really liked Cree bulbs, but between that and the fact that the lighting quality is just not as good, I won't be purchasing any more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great ! But ... I need the LED bulbs to be good for 'enclosed fittings', dampness and outdoors also. There are so many disclaimers on the bulb, on the box about these 3 issues that it seems there should be more testing done

If you struggle with the color of light produced by low energy bulbs this is the product to buy. Difficult to tell that the light is not Incandescent, this bulb has the correct glow and luminous. For those of us who have grown up on the "old style" bulbs, this one will give that comfortable feeling to the room. Thank you Cree, you guys nailed it.

These bulbs throw as much light as the 13W CFLs they replace, but the color is more orange than the 2700K would lead you to expect. In use, it's not distracting, and the color rendition seems good (these are in a kitchen), but it's noticeable when first turning them on.

Like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead, when they're good they are very, very good and when they're bad they are horrid. One out the four bulbs lasted one day. I expect the other three to run cheap, cool and close to forever.

These bulbs were bought with the main idea of brightening the lights in our house which we were selling. I can readily admit they did just that as pictures of our house almost made us want to buy it back before we sold it. The bulbs were a little pricey but if you can get the many hours projected at a lower cost per hour, they will be worth it for the new owner. We have had them for over a week now and they helped sell our house in just four days at a sale a little bt over our asking price. It exceeded our expectations for sure.

We replaced the "daylight" LED lamps with the lower lumen version, because everybody and everything looked and felt grim and institutional. (Plus from what I have read the blue color of the higher lumen has the potential to damage vision). I am very glad that we did. The light has a clarity that is definitive and inviting, like a sunny day. It makes me much happier. And I also thank you because I found three bones and some other treasures that I had hidden. They were delicious! Sincerely yours, Rodger

I have installed about 30 of these in two homes. I love the light color from the 2700K color. Its a true warm light. Dimming these bulbs with the Leviton 6674 dimmer is seamless and easy. I will note that the color at FULL DIM throws a slight blue hue but that in my experience is fairly normal. I have not had a single issue with these bulbs and plan to buy plenty more to get rid of all my old-school incandescent bulbs.

There is no electricity hum when they are dimmed and they have a good dimming range. If I get half the life out of these that the package claims (22.8 years) I will be happy. I was an early adopter of Cree bulbs--back when they were a lot more expensive than they are now. Of maybe 2 dozen in my house, I've had to replace at least five: two 65W-equivalent floods, two 3-way, and now, the above bulb (and these are the ones I remember). None of these lasted more than 2 years. For the former two groups, they lasted significantly less time than equivalent incandescents nearby that have been in service MUCH longer. I thought perhaps the newer Cree bulbs were better made, but then the latter bulb--the newest LED in my house--died in less than a year. With the current low price, the guarantee isn't worth anything anymore--saving the receipt & proof of purchase and waiting in line at HD takes more effort than it's worth. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.

Liked the "4-flow" design better, as it allowed light to go back up towards the base of the bulb like an ordinary incandescent does. When installed in pendant lighting, the difference is noticeable, though if all pendants have the same bulb, the actual effect on lighting quality is negligible.

Yes, they're pricey compared to ordinary incandescent lights, but the incandescent burn out frequently and irregularly, use a lot more electricity, and generate heat. None of which the LED's do. These bulbs are great...just what I needed....and like all Cree bulbs, they are dimmable and instant on. They use only 9.5 watts for a 60 watt equivalent build, now that is savings. Add the fact that they are rated at 22 plus years, these may well be the last build many of you purchase.
