3 in. Plumbing No Caulk Vent Pipe Repair Lead Flashing

$3000 /each

Overview

In many areas of the United States plumbing vents are sealed with lead. Unfortunately, squirrels like to gnaw on the lead and tear it open, potentially causing roof leaks. Over time, these leaks can cause significant damage. In addition plumbing vents are a major entry point for frogs, rats and other animals to enter into toilets. In the past the only way to repair this was to call a contractor, have them pull shingles, replace the lead and put a screen on the repaired vent. A repair that requires shingle removal rarely looks good potentially exposes damage and is expensive. Critter Quitter offers a cost effective and attractive solution to this problem. A home owner can repair their damaged plumbing vents without having to remove shingles or call a professional. Simply cut the unit to match your roof pitch, slide the unit onto the damaged vent and secure with 4 stainless steel screws (provided). The internal component will direct rain water into the vent keeping the damaged portion dry and keep animals out of plumbing. The unit is easily removed if plumbing vent access is required.

Questions & Answers

No lead flashing?

Our homes don't have lead flashing, just the pvc vent pipe. Will these work ok without that extra lead flashing thickness?
Asked by: Psyop
In general, you should have some type of flashing around vent pipes. These covers are meant to go over the lead flashing, so they are large enough to allow for the extra space of the lead inside the cover. Having said that, they should work on the PVC, but keep in mind you’ll need a smaller size and may need to pay extra care to align the cover hole over the center of the PVC.

My vent pipes are galzanized steel. Can I tighten the screws through the lead and stop? Should I drill a hole through the steel pipe and tap the screws in?
Asked by: JoeD
The composition (material) of the pipe is not important. The screws will create plenty of holding power as soon as you tighten them up to the pipe after penetrating the lead. Just make sure you do not overtighten the screws. It won't take that much force to do the job. It is not necessary to pre-drill the pipe.

Will this damage the vent pipe since your are screwing into the PVC vent stack to attach the vent guard?

Asked by: GP
Hi. I installed mine last week. I don't believe that the screws can actually penetrate the thicker (Schedule 40) PVC that should have been used for your vent stacks. Since the screws are "anchored" in the plastic cap/vent guard and it's softer, my guess is the screws would strip the plastic before they penetrated the harder PVC. But I didn't remove and inspect (as I couldn't have seen through my lead flashing anyhow). Even if it were to penetrate the PVC, I don't see how this would be a problem as there's no channel for any drips of water to get in. Not only is the screw threaded tightly through the plastic cap, there's also a funnel built inside the cap that channels any water from the top to go down the center of your PVC pipe.

These work very well and are easy to install (other than having to perch on a steep roof). I have a 12/12 slope roof which made the screws closest to the roof a bit hard to access so I had to use a right angle ratcheting screw driver on these. Also you may have to adjust the bottom cut a bit to ensure a tight fit next to the flashing as the slope here is sometimes slightly different from the adjoining roof.
