This mulching system is designed to turn your ordinary grass clippings into finely ground mulch. The high-lift baffle design combined with the included mulch plug will cut and recut grass clippings into smaller particles. AnswersThe mulch blades are totally different from the blades that came with your mower. The Mulch blades are angled than the regular blades. I assume it cuts the grass in smaller bits and it won’t clump.

AnswersLifted front end about 6in. off ground. Used a breaker bar for leverage very easy. Takes about 5 minutes per blade.

Mulch Plug does not work

Unfortunately the mulch plug does not seal properly. There is a gap on the bottom grass comes out - first slowly and then eventually shooting out.
This is clearly not how it should perform.
Seems to be a poor design.

I purchased a new Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 ($3300 with extended warranty) two weeks ago along with this Mulch kit from Home Depot. The kit took almost two hours to install, and I extremely regret that I even brought this kit. As others have already mentioned, the mulch plug that comes with this kit does not cover the side discharge. Grass clipping shot out everywhere! I tried to cover the gap by using duct tape, but that did not work. Home Depot should stop selling this kit and press Cub Cadet to fix the design before putting something like this on the market.

Bought the mulching kit and a new xt1 lawn tractor...mower works great no problems there..the fit on the mulching kit tho is garbage...not impressed at all I myself have used it twice and it’s coming off I can make something better than that... half inch gap on the bottom the grass still shoots out the side and leaves a trail of clumps...wish I would have got the jd as my dads mulching kit on his is much much better

Tearing grass vs clean cut

Had the mulch kit installed with my yearly maintenance service and had 2 good cuts but now looks like the blades are tearing the grass blades vs making clean cuts. I'm cutting at height 6 on my ZT1 and waited till the grass was dry and really having a very difficult time getting good clean cuts with my cab. Very disappointed with the mower itself and these mulching blades. And looks like i'm getting red thread and soon enough with the torn grass i'm sure other diseases will start to overtake my lawn.

This product is poorly designed. First, the plug is made out of flimsy plastic, including the only tab that is supposed to hold it in place, and it bends easily. Second, there are not enough anchor points/hardware to hold the plug in place tightly against the deck. As you mow, grass is squeezed between the deck and the plug and large chunks are left behind on your lawn, requiring you to go over them a bunch of times if you don't want your grass to die and your lawn to look a mess. I called Cub Cadet to ask for a solution and they pretty much said, "Too bad, that's how the plug was designed". I found a piece of flexible tubing laying around and decided to try using it to hold the plug in place. It worked well and I got much better results when mowing (no more chunks of grass or grass lines left behind). Cub Cadet, PLEASE redesign this product!

I’m sure this product would be great if I received what was pictured on the box and the directions. The bar in the front that is supposed to hook into the mower deck is angled the wrong way. Making it very difficult to install. I tried three different stores to find one that was pictured on the box and they’re all the same. I’m not pleased…

Just put aside some time, a breaker bar and torque wrench for changing the blades. Getting at the XT1's manual PTO cable and spring is awkward, but can be done from the left side of the mower and reaching through to the butterfly clip and spring.
Otherwise, removing the deck goes well. You will need a breaker bar and 15/16" socket for the blades. They are tight. I noted the position of the factory blades before removing them. The new blades get torqued pretty tight, so get out your torque wrench.
No issues with the mulch plug. Fits right in, but make sure the little tab on the left fits inside the deck. When installed correctly, including the supplied wire bracket, there are no large gaps. Some grass cuttings do get stuck in the edges of the plug, but that is a not a problem to me. They are easily removed and discarded.
Re-installing the deck was a bit easier and went well. Tested it out and was pleased at how the grass was cut into small pieces and deposited right down on the ground.
