Q:Is flexbond good for tiling over sturdy existing floor tile

Answer This Question
A: It’s not always a great idea to tile over tile but if it is really hard to get up, no cracks and not glossy then I think this is the best stuff for the job. I have used it for two floor tile over tile jobs and both turned out great and holding up just like any other floor I put in.Â

I didn’t do the install myself but we had just a few small cracks after everything dried. We used this mortar for thin brick flooring set in a herringbone pattern.

It says fast set online but not on the bag. Working time says 4hrs but we had maybe an hr before it hardened up and made it unusable. Wasted 29 bucks worth of tile and made a mess. Do not recommend

Given its description I was under the impression I could use it as a waterproof coating for an inground pool with the intention of overcoating it with a waterproof paint. After parging the walls and bottom of the pool this stuff started developing surface cracks as it dried.

First time with tile DIYer March 2021
I used 6 1/2" Daltile Titanium tiles in my alcove bath. I used aqua defense over cement board. I made small batches, which made all the difference, of the thin set to a paste consistency. 1/4" trowel. 1/8" spacers. Cleans well off of the tile. Sets in 24 hours but I needed to pop out a few tiles and it didn't ruin the cement board. Backbuttered all tiles. It's working out great! But I don't have anything else to compare it to but I'm a fan.

excellent mortar
This has been may go-to mortar for my recent bathroom renovation to secure cement board and then tile. It came highly endorsed by the manufacturer of the cement board. My only critique would be that it was challenging to mix the entire bag and use up quickly before drying. I learned after the first blunder to mix half the bag at a time to have a better mixed batch and prevent drying. Will use again!

We are not a pros, so we do not have a lot of experience with placing glass tile, however, we have learned a lot, and the FlexBond is only thinset we've found for large format glass tile. My wife and I are putting glass tile in two showers, over a waterproof membrane, which has the potential to create a lot of issues for modified thinset. We began by troweling on a smooth layer, covering all of the walls with the Flexbond and letting that dry. Then smoothing any rough spots we made with the trowel. We did not sand it, but smoothed the rough spots by scraping with a putty knife. Then we had a porous surface to which the glass could be adhered. we used a v notch trowel (recommended by the tile manufacturer) to apply the FlexBond over the dried FlexBond surface. We combed it straight vertically, one course at a time. We also back buttered the glass tiles with FlexBond so we achieved 100% coverage on our tiles. This worked very well. We have placed as many as 10 courses without stopping, and have had no wet weight release or movement issues. We also have tried to remove a dried tile, which would have resulted in destroying the tile and or wall, so we know the bond is very good. After the FlexBond dried (usually the next day) it cleans off of the tile effortlessly. Which is likely why it's hard to find a good thinset for glass tile. The thinset will not stick to the front of the glass tile no matter what, but it will stick to the painted back very well. And it is sanded, but we have had no scratching of the tile when cleaning off the thinset. Cleaning out the grout lines is also quite easy with a linoleum knife. But do this the next day. The longer you wait, the harder it gets. After having done considerable research, and tiling, we believe this is a great product. It has performed very well. Time will tell. If you are placing large format glass tile, don't hesitate to use this product. So far, I have no negative comments, only positive.

If I'm going to work on my house, I like to use the best available products (within reason) so I don't have issues with it in the future. That's why I chose this Fexbond product. It was easy to use on my mosaic tile. What little bit that got on the top of the tiles was easy to clean off, even after it had dried.

This product was easy to mix and use, causing my tile installation to go smoothly. The powder room looks great after the project was completed. I would recommend this product for tile in different areas.
