Questions & Answers

Is this a true gray color?

Asked by: Blessed
If it is like the Light Smoke I purchased, NO!!!. I bought the darker grout to match my tiles and it dried almost beige. I purchased a porcelain wood grain tile and the light grout just ruins the look I was trying to get. I guess now I will try to color it . Another step I wasn't counting on having to do.

Can I use this grout with porcelain tile?

I don’t think that grout matters what type of tile you are using. The size of the grout line is what matters the most, and unsanded grout should be used in grout lines under 1/8”.

Polyblend #122 Linen 10 lb. Non-Sanded Grout is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 1323.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Why is the Color Sample Purple? This grout is dark brown After reading all the negative grout reviews, I did some research as to how NOT to have my dark grout turn out significantly lighter than anticipated and end up with white surface effervescence. I followed strict instructions on the water measurements and made sure my sponge was only damp. Also, i learned that grout has problem drying in humid or cold temperatures so I took a blow dryer to it to expedite the drying process and it did not effect the color. The Sable color is great with the tile I chose. I only got a bit of spotty grout toward the edges where you can't tell. And for people who are confused on what the color is. When you see the grout mix dry in the bag, that is the color the applied grout should dry to. My Sable brown looked like a melted chocolate bar when wet and dried lighter. I have posted a zoomed in photo for color comparison. On my computer screen the grout color sample looks purple lol

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dries uneven colors We used this grout on gray/taupe subway tiles for our tub surround. We mixed the grout according to the instructions, and it seemed fine when going on. All was good until it dried. It dried almost white in some places and dark gray in others. It was completely random and varied from white to dark gray over the entire project! When grouting we noticed streaks of red and orange pigments in the mix. We used a hammer drill to mix so it wasnt that it didnt get mixed enough. I couldnt leave it like that so i had to buy some grout renew and painted every single grout line in a slightly darker "delorean gray." That added an unnecessary 8-10 hours! (Yes, painting grout lines is a huge pain!). We finally have the look we were going for, but it took considerably more time and money than it should have. What a disappointment! We have used white grout by this company with no problems, but we will not buy any other colors of grout made by them. I would not recommend this color.

Within the past 2 weeks a tile contractor installed Jeffrey Court Weather Grey tiles on a shower surround wall using Oyster Grey grout. I kept hoping that within a few days the grout would dry to an even color. It is now dry and the appearance remains the same. I was ready to blame the tile guy. But apparently it is my fault for requesting this grout. I have never had such an experience with grout. What we hoped would be a beautiful bathroom redo is simply an ugly nightmare and I can't bear to look at it. The project was very expensive. We also used this grout as recommended by Home Depot for the floor tile in the same room. It applied unevenly, displays similar inconsistency in color, and some cracks and pinholes are apparent. Results are awful all around, and I now wish I'd kept the 30+ year old 4x4 white tiles with original and almost pristine white grout. I would give it negative stars if I could.

This grout is a bit tricky to work with compared to others used, especially if not used to dark non-sanded grout (charcoal in this case). I do not recommend following the instructions on the back of the box entirely. The time to sponge remove excess and remove the grout haze are not correct. Mix a small amount that you can work with in an hour, not the entire box. Make sure your mixture consistency is like jello pudding or mixed yogurt. Work in small areas, around 3-4 sq ft, at a time. Rubber float grout in the lines only, do not place and wipe over the entire tile. Lightly sponge off excess within 5 minutes. Lightly remove haze within 10 minutes. Take careful note of the area you are working in and don't let it sit too long. Why? The time and technique listed on the box result in grout caked on the tile face that is very difficult to remove, uneven grout lines, and a haze at 2 hours that is impossible to remove without vinegar. Take your time over a small area, be careful. . . move onto the next area . Constantly check the mixture thickness, add a few drops of water and mix to maintain a smooth consistency. Too thick and it will be hard to work into the lines and remove excess, to thin and it won't set properly or pinhole. For ceramic porcelain faced tile only; undiluted vinegar is the only thing I found that removed the haze and cleaned up the grout lines after setting for an hour. Work with a small towel corner dipped in vinegar, wipe off immediately with a clean watered sponge. Dry with a clean towel. I would not recommend this grout for any non-porcelain faced smooth tile, manufactured tile with stone like recesses appearance, or actual stone. It would get into the small crevices on the tile face and you will not be able to remove it entirely.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dries to a different color I had the same issue as other reviewers - once the grout dries the color lightens to a medium grey, not a charcoal as is pictured on the box. It seems like this is an issue with just about all black grout due to the amount of cement required. HOWEVER I was able to salvage my project by using polyblend's grout renew colorant/sealant - it's good to seal your grout anyway and the charcoal grout renew does dry black! I used the grout renew to brighten up dingy tile in the past so when I was disappointed in the color of this grout I was excited to see that they do make the grout renew in charcoal! I highly suggest that anyone planning on putting in tile with black grout uses the grout renew - I just used a toothbrush to scrub it on and wiped off the excess.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst grout ever First of all I am not a novice. I've grouted before. This product is the worst ever and has caused hours and hours of heartache and has turned a bathroom we spent $15,000 to remodel to a bathroom worh 10 cents. The grout colors have all turned an ugly gray color. The package said that we might experience efflouresence and to use a grout cleaner/acid to fix the problem. Well, that didn't work. So now we have to use a grout "paint" to get the color we want. Before we did that we decided to dig the grout out and try a darker color. It still turned an ugly whitish gray. We're going to call tech services and find out what the heck is wrong with their grout, but I have a feeling they'll just read from the package to us. I wish we hadn't been stupid enough to go back and buy more of the same brand when we decided to dig it out and regrout. We have never ever had this problem. Don't buy this grout. It's a waste of time, money and agony and it will ruin your bathroom.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Do it in small batches Unless you are a pro I would suggest starting small. My starting mix was 6.7 dry oz. per 1/4 cup (2 fl. oz). My mixing container was a 8 oz. CoolWhip plastic container. I was grouting 1/8" joints with 9" x 12" tiles. Although I had Goldblatt tools tools, I used el-cheapos (3" and 6" plastic drywall knives and a $1.59 plastic float). I also had a plastic grout sponge and a 5 gallon bucket to rinse the tools in. I did two to three batches a day. Job ended up looking very nice with no screw-ups. The color was my wife's pick and she likes the look of the finished job. I did add a 2 1/2" accent border with mosaic tiles I had left over from the the kitchen I did several years ago. Very minimal cracking or crazing in the joints (some minor touch up needed). It took about 6 1/2 lbs. of grout for the entire job which consisted of the tub/shower surround, about 8 linear feet around the toilet , and a 6 linear feet of backsplash above the sink countertop. A total of about 80 sq. ft. of tile.

Product was used to refloat old existing tile grout in kitchen and foyer to make dirty tan grout white. Product was easy to mix and apply as per instuctions on box. I am very pleased with the end result. A night and day difference made to my home in a matter of hours for under $15.00 dollars. It took longer to clean up than it did to apply this product. Very pleased with the end resault. Thanks again Home Depot. James
