Questions & Answers

after installation what color does it actually turn out to be? Dark black as shown or light grey?

Asked by: cat
The taupe color posted on the Chateau search result is a pretty accurate rendition of the Chateau grout when dry. HP obviously erred in linking the charcoal color to the Chateau Q&A.

Why is my grout color so uneven? Some areas are lighter, some are darker. This is the second time this has happened to me using Polyblend. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong - has anyone had this problem?

In the direction on mixing you will find that you mix it all to avoid color difference. I don't . We pour it all into a dry bucket and pour into another dry bucket over and over till we feel its mixed well and then made small batches. Now if you let it sit for long, repeat the color can separate .

Polyblend #19 Pewter 25 lb. Sanded Grout is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1873.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse thing ever - Ruined my floor This grout is NOT dark brown. I put in a 400 sq ft floor using Gunstock (wood look alike) tiles. The display in the store said "Shown with Tobacco Brown Grout" It was beautiful so that is what I bought. When the grout was wet it looked great, but when it dried it was at least 3 shades lighter and looks like gray chalk lines. Does not even look brown at all. My $3000 floor looks horrible!!! I am now going to have to attempt to re-stain the grout a darker color. This will require painting all the grout lines with a tooth brush. It will probably take me months to complete. If you are looking for Brown grout - STAY AWAY FROM THIS COLOR!!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Color way to light We pick out the pewter color of the grout to closely match the slate tiles that the purchased at Home Depot. The grout mixed well, and handled great. However, we were totally surprised with the color when it was finaly cured. It was more a medium gray color than the color swatch. I know that it is not uncommon for grout to dry lighter. However, I this was at least 4 shades lighter. After searching the net I found that this seems to be a common problem with this brand of grout. I tested a standard grout sealer and that did not change the grout color. To solve the problem I coated the grout with an enhancing sealer which darkened the grout to closely match the original color swatch.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Color did not match Wish I had seen the previous reviewer's post first. We also bought the Pewter, an almost exact match to our mottled grey quartz tile (at least on the swatch). 1 week later, the grout is the "Delorean" color from the swatch, not the "Pewter" color. It's likely that if we went with "Charcoal" we would have ended up with "Pewter". Other than the poor color match, the grout was easy to mix, easy to use. Just keep your sponge as dry as possible. Only giving it two stars because color match is really important, no matter how easy it is to use. Going to try to dye it darker so that my grout "blends into" my tile, instead of "framing" it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grout dried inconsistent and white The tobacco brown grout is supposed to be a beautiful rich brown color. It looks great wet, but dries very uneven and white in many places. Overall it looks very gray/white/hazy and not at all brown. We had a professional installer. We even showed him concerns from others before starting the project because unfortunately we'd already purchased the grout. We followed the directions from Custom Building Products for correcting the problem and it still looks bad. This is very disappointing and frustrating as we tiled over 1400 sq ft. Be prepared to spend a lot of extra work, time, and money attempting to correct the issue if you purchase this grout. We are very dissatisfied.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from customer service save This review is actually a follow up to my original in which the light smoke ended up grey. LJ from the manufacturer contacted me and informed me that using well water or water softened with salt can result in effervescence or a build up of salt on the outside of the grout. Not sure if that's what's been happening with all the other reviewers that had issues with color ending up much lighter than advertised. In any case, LJ was very proactive and helpful. Since I'd already sealed my grout with 2 coats of 511, he recommended using grout renew in the light smoke color which they are mailing out to me. All in all a pretty good 'save' from my point of view.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as advertised Saw the reviews that said it dried lighter than advertised so we bought a darker color than we planned. Brown Sable. It dried exactly as on the bag. The color of a Hershey chocolate bar. Looks great with the 6X24 wood look tiles. Wouldn't have had the nerve to plan to go with such dark grout, so it was a happy accident. It was easy to use and cleaned up easy. My husband smeared in the grout and I went behind with the cleanup sponge. We've never done this before and were shocked how fast it went. And we are old and slow! (both 60 yrs old) I wish we would've known about the sealer you mix in with the grout powder. So now we move on to Sealer.... Need to check out YouTube for the how to..... Gotta love the internet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very nice sanded grout for high traffic areas A very easy to mix fine ground grout. I chose this to accent wood-faux tile I had set down with the small openings in between. I was able to get it to pour with a cup into the deep openings near the edge and then to firm up and grout evenly and firmly with no air bubble formation upon setting. After drying I applied a sealer and it took it up easily and now is a much loved part of our living room. I would recommend these as I have used other grouts that did not match up to this one. Thanks for taking the time to read my opinion.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tabacco brown grout faded to near white. Used professional installer and tabacco brown grout faded to near white. Makes the expensive tile I purchased look pretty bad. The bag says if you experience fading to call. I am still trying to get a hold of their technical services line, but am on hold for far too long each time I call. I used their product before on another project and it was fine. My contractor is hopeful they will send a bottle of stain. The grout looks like it's dusty next to my brown handscraped "wood" tile. disappointing to ruin $300 worth of tile with faded grout.
