Yes, it's actually recommended to use it before putting red guard down. That way there aren't gaps you're trying to fill with the red guard. It can also be used on top after the fact.

Good for DIYers
After much review we opted to use Redgard for a DIY bathroom remodel instead of a Schluter membrane (which was much more expensive). The Redgard was easy and straightforward to use. The first coat was sucked up A LOT by the cement board, which made it time consuming to do. The second coat went on much faster and smoother than the first. Definitely recommend using a combination of a roller and a brush, as sometimes the roller won’t actually roll becaise of the consistency of the Redgard, which is a very thick, pudding-like consistency. The area pictured is just under 80 sqft and we used 1gal to complete it. I believe the guidelines on the packaging are 1 gal = 2 coats for 55 sqft. So it stretched a little in our experience, but after watching many videos it seems that it's better for it to be less thick than more thick as the membrane can crack while drying if it’s applied too thickly.

Sure there are less expensive options out there but why cheap out on such an important step? Redgard will not let you down and the coverage is great, one gallon was enough to do our entire hall bath including the shower surround, the floor and the walls.

Excellent
This product is easy to use, it applies like paint. You can see from the picture that I posted that I had applied it over my shower niche with optional Red Guard tape to seal the joints between the niche and the adjacent studs. The product turns from pink (when wet) to red (when cured). Tile mortar adheres right to it.

I think this product is expensive, But even though the tile experts that taught me methods of redoing a bath surround, say that you do not need to waterproof the cement board they could not be more mistaken. besides the studs your cement board is placed upon, that should be plumb and even edged to each other, the cement board or backer board is the most important foundation of a bath tile redo. Most tile installers will only water proof the joints and corners if that. A $45.00 investment in Red Gard is well worth the cost, to give both a vapor barrier and a secondary containment so water cannot penetrate, if the tile, grout, or thin-set layers fail for any reason. Good insurance!, and can be used to water proof substrate below your vinyl plank floor in the bath, powder, laundry room, or kitchen areas.
