We are considering using the Simple Mat underneath tiles for a backsplash. The tiles will not get wet. BUT, we have a toaster oven we usually keep on the counter and is usually sitting a few inches from the painted drywall. Is this going to be an issue? We will grout & seal tile.
Asked by: Atown
I used it with glass tiles for my back splash 2 years ago, around a stove and toaster. There have been no issues. The product has worked fine with no indication of failure. I did apply grout right after applying the mat to the walls.

Why must my tiles be grouted in 24 hours using simplemat?

Started tiling first section but wont be able to finish cutting tiles for a couple of days. Have at least 10 that are un-cut in the first section.
Asked by: Subway tiler
be careful if you use sealer with simple mat. i used sealer on my stone mosaic tiles and it began to fall off before i then had a chance to grout.

SimpleMat 10 sq. ft. Tile Setting Mat is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 455.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes Tiling Completely Easy! We loved this project - we had wanted to do a tile back splash in our kitchen however neither of us had ANY experience with tiling, grouting etc. we found a video online that talked about using adhesive strips and this was the one we could find in our home depot so we bought it and went to work. If the tile is at all wet it will not stick to the walls - so make sure your tiles are completely dry. Also be totally sure about your placement because once you stick the sheet to the wall its staying there! This product also comes in a roll - though they work exactly the same (we had to use both because our home depot only had one package of the squares) the roll is much more difficult to navigate as it does not have paper on both sides making it much more difficult to cut. After placing the tile up and grouting you can't tell the difference between using the strips and our friends professionally installed tile! Overall we were very happy and if you have any issues there are lots of videos online and youtube to help with installing these things.

We went with the advice of a friend and got the same opinion from a Home Depot associate and used this product. The tile we used was 12" x 12" sheets of mosaic tile on mesh backing and we experienced zero issues. The tile stuck very well and as a matter of fact it was very difficult to reposition a sheet or two I didn't get just right. But I did reposition them and they still stuck just fine to the simple mat. I made sure and pressed each sheet firmly in place with my rubber grout float as I put the sheet up, I did each and every one that way. I grouted 24 hours after I installed the tile and everything continued to hold during that process as well. I guess now for the longevity test, but I still need to put up my trim and continue on down the wall to the right under the cabinets when the tile comes in, and seal the tiles. This was my first tile job. It may not be perfect but I and more importantly the wife are pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't listen to the bad reviews!!! I'm not sure what the people that gave this product 1-star were doing wrong... maybe they installed the sheets incorrectly or didn't push down and 'set' the tiles after they had their layout done??? Who knows... all I know is this product is GREAT! I was able to do my entire kitchen backsplash in under 4 hours including grouting. I used the glass mosaic tiles on the mesh grids (which one reviewer said didn't work) and they held perfectly. I worked carefully getting the layout just right with the spacers in place and then I used my grouting float to 'set' the tiles before applying the grout. As another reviewer mentioned - once the tiles are on there, it's not easy to get them off, so be sure your layout is what you want before you push down and 'set' them. The tiles never moved during the grouting process and the backsplash looks gorgeous! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product to the every day consumer that wants to make tiling an easy do-it-yourself project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't believe the negatives! I loved this! After purchasing SimpleMat I decided to get online and check into it a bit more before I started using it. I was met with negative review after negative review. Not what I wanted to see. I did find enough positive reviews to decide to go ahead and try it and I am so glad I did! The installation was super easy. I used my rubber tool to spread grout to make sure the mat was stuck tight to my wall. The friction also heated the glue a bit which made it stick better. I also used 12x12 sheets of glass and metal tiles and it's only recomended up to 10x10. I began grouting that night and ran out of grout. I didn't finish until almost a week later. There were 2 very small spots where the tiles were coming off but it was a section that had been cut so the tiles were 100% stuck to the mesh backing either. I am very happy with my backsplash and this made the process very easy. I would not hesitate to use this product again and would recomend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best time saving product All of the other reviews of the simple mat appear to read like the customer did not fully follow the directions. I first went to a tile laying class at HD and the simple mat was used as well as thinset. I put up a backsplash in my kitchen with the simple mat, I can not say this enough YOU MUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!!!!! First measure everything out, you may have to cut the mat, then only work in sections you can handle. You must press the mat to the cleaned and dried wall with your grout trowl, then when you set your tile, you must press that in again. It is hard to move once it is set, but if you realize your mistake fast, you can pull the tile back off of the wall. After you finish laying your tile, you must grout! This product does not have the same qualities as thinset, it is meant to be grouted the same day, you can not wait untill the next day. Follow the directions when you use the simple mat, if you need help ask the employees in the department or if you have time go to a class, it took about two hours but it is very informative and hands on. The first thing they gave us in the class was a pair of gloves, then the education of the different choices, then you actually got to practice laying tiles, right there in the store. It was an awesome and empowering experience. This product is highly reccommended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not all its cracked up to be.... We just used the tile set mat to tile our kitchen counter and backsplash. I would not recommend this product for anything other than a small repair or simple job. The tile set mat does does not hold tiles for more than 5 minutes, so you have to work quickly with grout. We found using painter's tape helped hold tiles in place until we were finished. After the grout set, had to redo the bull nosed edge pieces because they had fallen off over night (with grout!) we had to buy thinset and redo the bull nosed edge. We are hoping and praying the rest of the counter and backslash hold. We have noticed several cracks in the grout. At first we thought this was our technique, but after repairing the bull nosed edge, I believe the cracks are from the non-solid fibrous tile set mat. Because the tiles do not "set" like with thinset. There is a shift factor causing the cracking. PLEASE do not use this product. It's awful!! We this point, we are considering taking it all down and redoing with thinset, as we are worried about long term ability to hold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SOOOOOOOOOO SIMPLE! I fought with myself for a while before I took a chance with this product. I think this is the only time in my life that something has actually turned out great for me the first time around. I saw alot of reviews about this stuff coming off or tiles not sticking to it. I am sure, after using it myself, that these people aren't doing it right. It has very simple instructions and great support on how and where you can use it. I actually used it for my kitchen back splash and went outside of the recommended tile size (8"x8") and used 12" x 12" glass mosaic on mesh backing and it worked like a charm. I actualy had to pull these sheets off the wall because I didn't level them right and I wasn't sure they would come of with how sticky they were but they did and went back up with the same stickiness as the first time. I would definitely recommend this product to any diyer that has a backsplash to do. For those sceptics and pros who bring up the worry of it not holding the tiles mine have been up for over 2 months now and not so much as a sag anywhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn't get any easier than this! Firstly, let me put out there that I am a busy mom, I do not have enough hours in the day to work outside and still take care of the home, but I digress.I had a small project for my half bath to install glass tile around the sink. I was shopping around for mortar for my project and stumbled across this product. I figured well, considering I have no experience installing tile other than vinyl floor tiles, I could give it a try. The hardest part about installing my backsplash was cutting a few tiles. This product made my project a breeze and I am very happy with the results. Unless I told them, no one would be able to know that I cheated. My next project on my to-do list is kitchen backsplash and I will for sure be using this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to use! An employee talked us into using this product and my husband was skeptical. However, knowing that we were working with limited available time and energy, we decided to bite the bullet and absorb the additional cost of this product against the lesser cost of mastic. Wow - were we glad we did. This product was so easy to use and there was zero clean up needed. Just throw away the paper backing. That's it! The tile stuck beautifully and our tile job took 2 hours as opposed to 4 or more. You also have the ability to grout the same day, instead of having to wait 24 hours. We will use this product again!

Being first time tile DIYers, we saw this product as an easier, less messy way to get our backsplash project done. The mats were very easy to put up and cut to go around outlets (the value roll is another story). It seemed very sticky but by the next morning, we had 3 sections of tile on the countertop. We replaced them and then pushed on other areas that were very loose. Unfortunately, we had to keep doing that throughout the day and the next morning, once we started grouting, we made the decision to remove everything because there was entire sections that were loose and would not stick no matter what. The easiness that everything came off was disconcerting also giving our concerns that the tiles may have come down at some future point validity. We have now decided to pay someone to do the job. I don't recommend these at all unless major improvements are made with the strength of the stickiness.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from the mess is better than worring about your tile falling off the wall the idea behind it is great, however id did not work as advertise. clean it is, but that is all, the tile could and would stick to the mat, but not all the time, had to wait for each tile cut to dry extremely well, otherwise it will not stick, so time wasted there, had to use heavy duty adhesive to the back of each cut tile, and after adjusting a tile it will no longer stick, so more glue, really I would not mind the mixing and mess of mixing thin set or buying for the same price a bucket of premix mastic, and waiting another day to finish, it is worth doing it right and not worrying about your tile holding on to this mat, really disappointed. but at least I tried it and will not use it again never again waste of time and money, the old fashion way works much better, just have to be less lazy and do the things right and not cut corners. good luck to those that gave this product great reviews and that your tile will hold up, hope what I did yesterday will hold up, afraid my costumer will call me and tell me the tile is falling off the wall. What a mistake, good luck on your projects...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product (if done right). I used this to install a backsplash in my kitchen. We put up pretty heavy travertine tile and it stuck perfectly...almost too good. It is a very strong adhesive...try to be precise when putting the tile up because it is a pain to take it off and adjust...the "stick" is strong and it's hard to pull tile off. I am not sure about the other reviews saying that the tile did not stick...could have been VERY old and not sticky any longer, but I think most likely the wrong side of the product was stuck to the wall. Like I said, I could hardly pull the tile off to adjust it...couldn't imagine the tile falling off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easier than I thought I was a little nervous about using this but when I was at HD another customer (tile guy) said he had a friend that used it with success. I decided to give it a try. Super easy to use if you follow the directions. I had no issues putting it up or cutting it, It is very hard to move once you stick it. I grouted right away and as of a few days later my tile is firmly on the wall. This is the second time I've tiled, made the mistake of buying the premixed SimpleGrout on glass tile only to figure out that it's sanded grout. I have a few scrathes that I fixed with car wax-live and learn! Very happy with the product so far & I would use it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Avoid these mistakes and it works flawlessly! We installed mosaic tile (containing glass, stone, and metal tiles) as backslpash in our kitchen. Being that my husband and I have never done tile or grouting before, I was SO excited that a YouTube video turned us on to the existence of Simplemat after watching the nasty process and long wait time of mastic. Skeptical (and completely clueless), I googled all the reviews I could find and watched several YouTube videos. Here are the DOs and DON'Ts we used in our installation compiled from the experiences of others. Not to say there isn't a different or better way, but this worked flawlessly or us: 1. Use the Simplemat sheets and not the roll. WHY? The sheets have plastic on both sides that makes it super easy to cut and keeps it from drying out. The roll only has plastic on one side; not user friendly (tends to stick to itself and is impossible to unstick); scissors & hands get covered in super stickiness. The sheet are more expensive per sqft, but seemed to be worth it. 2. Prep the wall by washing with damp clot and allowing to dry COMPETELY or Simplemat won't stick. 3. Measure and cut all tiles in a given section (if possible) before applying to Simplemat. We did about a 10 sqft section at a time or less. WHY? Comments pointed to the Simplemat losing it's sticky over a short time of a few hrs so you don't want to spend time cutting after you've started sticking. The circular glass nippers work incredibly well. We did not try the other styles. 4. When using a tile saw, ensure TOTAL dryness before applying tiles to Simplemat. WHY? They will not stick if there is any moisture. We used a towel and a hair dryer then let them sit for several hours to allow the porous stone sections to dry completely. 5.We used a rubber float and rubber roller (used in resurfacing our countertop) to press the Simplemat onto the wall. I felt the roller did a better job of applying pressure but the rolling motion tended to disrupt the plastic on the Simplemat so try that at your own risk. We didn't have any issue with it not being sticky, but it was a concern. 6. Have a helper! Especially around outlets it's VERY helpful to have 4 hands. WHY? Once the tiles are stuck they're stuck! There's a small chance you could get it off to reposition, but don't bank on it. Good news - it's super sticky, Bad news - it's super sticky! 7. Use a yard stick as a spacer along the bottom while setting tile. Helps to ensure a straight line (without messing with more of those terrible cross spacers) and avoid repositioning. 8. Grout the tiles immediately. WHY? A common item in reviews was that when the tile was left ungrouted (especially overnight), they experienced fallen tiles. Our tiles sat stuck to Simplemat for 2hrs max while we finished applying tiles to a given section (took us a bit as it was our first time). FYI - we used Simplegrout. Way more expensive than buying powder, but this was open-the-tub-and-get-to-work idiot proof easy. No mixing, no sealing, no shrinking, immediate cleanup for a great finished look. Messy (as I'm told all grout is), but not too bad to clean if you're diligent when it's still wet. Also, buy the small float in addition to the big one; you'll thank me when you're grouting around outlets, under cabinets, and in corners. Thanks to all the unknowing participants in this review (and in our newly beautified kitchen) who allowed us to learn from their mistakes & ideas. Here's to passing it forward. Happy tiling!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made a DIYer Out of ME!! Back in 2012 we remodeled our kitchen and used this product. It is still holding up perfectly after 3 years. Installation was easy, and I was able to cut just what I needed for the areas to be covered. I used this on the end of the cabinet first to see how it'd work and if I could really do it myself, and it came out so nice, we went ahead and bought several boxes of this to use not only for our stove/microwave surround, I used it all around the the counter top for the back splash, and did the counter top too! I used it with the mesh backed tile for the walls, and loose tiles for the counter tops and it came out exactly as I had hoped, even better. This product is great. Just be sure to follow the directions. When you put this on the wall you MUST have the glue strips in the VERTICAL position! I noticed in one of the "bad" reviews of this product, where they had the tiles falling off and included a photo of it, the glue strips were in the horizontal position. I'll bet my bottom dollar that the positioning of the glue strips had EVERYTHING to do with their issues!! I HIGHLY recommend this product - even to newbies, such as myself. It not only saved us money on having to hire someone to do this for us, it was super easy to use and the results speak for themselves!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would NEVER recommend I was excited to see this product as I was just tiling a small area/backsplash and thought I could get it up and grouted very quickly. The product went up easy and stuck on the wall but most of my slate tiles wouldn't stick! I washed and dried every tile so it's not that the tile was wet or dirty. I ended up having to glue some of the tiles so I couldn't grout right away. While waiting for the glued tiles to dry, the other tiles that did stick shifted position after I took out the spacers! Needless to say, I am going to have to go back to the store and buy mastic adhesive so I can finish the job. So the "quickest and easiest" way to install tile has turned into more of a job and taken longer than if I would have just bought regular mastic adhesive in the first place! I would definitely NOT recommend this product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product for LIGHT tile projects We were facing a small project - our kitchen counter was wood slabs covered with a Bar Topper (clear epoxy). Limited product availability to adhere to epoxy made this project a bit tricky locating proper materials for quality outcome. Two choices that we had were epoxy-based tile adhesive (messy to deal with) and Simplemat. We took the risk and purchased Simplemat (one box) and Simplemat roll (30 feet). Reviews mostly came from home owners who used this product and we were not so sure that this product will work in our application. Here is what we experienced with this product. Pros: 1. Yes, there is "no mess" using this product, as prior reviewers described it compared to thinset, tile adhesives, etc. 2. Product stays "on" smooth surfaces - painted, sanded-down. 3. Tiles adhere to the drops of glue well and can be re-adjusted (shifted) even a day later. 4. Works great for small-sized to-be-tiled surfaces, but we would not recommend this for "large" projects. Cons: 1. Absolutely ZERO adhesion to wooden surfaces that are not smooth (rough cut lumber or non-sanded). 2. The worst experience if you have ANY uneven surface. We thought we had none, but to our surprise - we discovered a few spots that produced tile in masse coming off the wall with the tape still attached to them. Simply because there was 1/16 or so "bumps" between wooden boards. 3. The Simplemat recommendation is for 8"x8" tile sized (maximum). We utilized 6"x6" and we experienced a few "drops" of the tile because we did not press "hard enough," but we did manage to break a few by pressing on them with too much force - otherwise they would not adhere to Simplemat. We managed to clean each tile from dust, washed it with water, let it dry. However, for some reason STONE tile was not cooperating too well in some areas (splash area underneath the cabinets where it was hard-to-reach) where we had to practice yoga moves pressing on tile. 4. Some tiles came right off before we applied grout. It seems that grout is the base that solidifies the installation and makes the tiles one solid piece. Application of grout right after the installation is recommended. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this product for "serious" projects such as shower tiles application, but for simple projects such as splashes and even counters. Our project involved stacking 4 tile columns max and even than we had some issues with tile coming off. It's a great product for BASIC projects that homeowner can do. For "serious" projects - showers, for example, please do it the "old school" way - thinset, so no tile comes off right away or in a couple of years (God forbid your grout wears out and water starts escaping behind the "glued" tile). We ended-up using Liquid Nails (waterproof) for fixing the tile that came off Simplemat and would not adhere properly anymore - we caught out the Simplemat section with knife and applied LN to remedy the situation. We do not see how this product can be used for commercial applications. But homeowners - sure, why not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Preparation is key So I really debated on using this product for my backsplash (20 foot long x 15 inches high) - but in the end decided to try it. I was ultra paranoid about following the directions, including roughing up the surface (painted drywall in my case) with 80 grit sandpaper, then wiping down afterword. laying the simplemat took longer than i expected, but i had quite a few outlets to maneuver. i have to confess the once up - it made applying the tile easier as i could work at my own pace just peel back as much new surface as you need. in the end though - i'm not sure i really saved all the much time over just troweling mastic. you're going to get messy regardless by having to grout. now if you can find a product that avoids mastic/thinset *AND* grouting - you'd have a winner ! :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for small projects I used the SimpleMat for installing a kitchen backsplash with 3x6 subway tiles. This proved to be a great alternative to backer board and thinset. I liked the thin profile. There was just the thickness of a piece of paper and a thin layer of glue versus a minimum of 1/4" for backerboard plus the thickness of the thinset. You also avoid the mess of mixing and cleanup for the thinset. I discovered one advantage is the ability to make changes. After installing the tile on a wall, I decided I did not like the layout. I was able to carefully pry off the tiles without losing any tiles and removed the SimpleMat sheets and threw them away to make sure I had good sheets for the new layout. Although some have downgraded the Simplemat for poor adhesion, making this change with traditional materials would have been a real pain. It is also very important to make sure the surface is absolutely flat as recommended. I had issues around two electrical receptacles with uneven gypsum board and a generous amount of liquid nail solved the problem. To deal with the adhesion issue I found that heating the glue with a hair dryer until the glue was soft was very effective. As a result, I have no problem whatsoever with tiles falling off. I am very pleased with final result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install, great for small projects I researched this product and read about successes and failures. The key is to follow the directions. Use with the right size tile, or mosiac tile sheets with enough space in the web to allow the adhesive to contact the tile. You must grout more quickly than with tile installations with thinset. If you follow these guidelines I think you will be very satisfied with the results. This is a great product for small projects where using normal tile installation techniques would be very messy and time consuming. I completed my small backsplast in less than 2 hours, and it looks great!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use this product! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! We decided to try this product at our own house before we started using it for our Home Improvement business. Thank goodness we did! The product went on super easy and we had our kitchen backsplash done within a few hours. The next day we used our oven (backsplash is on side and behind oven) and everything was still great. By the next morning, ALL of the backsplash literally fell off the walls. After reading the reviews below, I have now realized that this product does not hold up with any kind of heat. The oven was literally on for 30 minutes. Trust me, do not use this product or be ready to wake up with it on the floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm a newbie so take this for what is worth Just bought a house in December, not typically a handy man, have done things like hardwired a couple lights, installed doggy door, put up closet, installed garbage disposal. I tell you this so you can put your (superior) skills in context to mine. :) Followed instructions, read the reviews that said single tiles had no place to stick. layed the tilemat down on counter, than put 12x12 tile set over it to see where everything would line, up, including my singles (We got offset rectangular tiles so you need to put singles on the edges on the side) Side Note: instead of cutting tiles, if your using rectangular offset 12x12 just buy a similarly colored 12x12 of small squares and use them to fill spaces. Ok, so put everything on the counter below where your backsplash will be and line it up first. I cut the bottom (1/3 inch) off the mat because it was blank of glue, and this allowed me to match up all my tiles/singles/spaces. It was a tiny bit of a pain b/c I had to do this on 6 feet of mat, but totally worth it so my singles stuck. Cutting around outlets was easy I used exacto knife or scissors. What everyone said about not being able to move the tile once it is pressed on is true. I did have to take one whole 12x12 off because I did it crooked, but the mat held its stick for the replacement and I did NOT have to take the mat off. time will tell, it's only a day old but looks freakin awesome, and with my limited skills I for sure would not have attempted backsplash with 'old' style. now my wife wants it everywhere... sigh... lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Amazing!! I did the glass tile installation all on my own using 1x2 inch glass tile with a mesh backing. I couldn't have done this without the Simple Mat. Why in the world would anybody use anything but this product. I am a 43 year old female and proud as heck of myself for a job well done!
