Does this end up really shiny? I'm wanting more of a satin finish.
Asked by: hendelk
It does have a bit of shine to it, but you can always wet sand it with a fine grit paper once the top coat dries to help eliminate some of that.

My cabinets are white. The color sets a little darker than what appears in the picture. Very light Gray cabinets should contrast well.

I need to refinish my bathroom and kitchen countertops. Ideally I would like to do these two projects three weeks apart. How long can the enclosed products once opened, be saved and used for a second project?
Asked by: WishinginWashington
You can save the remaining product in the can it came in to use at a later date since they are paint type cans. As far as length of time, I don't think just a few weeks is going have any affect on the leftover material at all.

Mineral Select 1 qt. Onyx Fog Countertop Refinishing Kit (4-Count) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 136.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beginner friendly, would definitely do again! I was looking to resurface the kitchen counters in my new rental house, without investing a lot of money. My brother had resurfaced his about 8 years ago with the rustoleum epoxy type. It looked great and has held up well, but was very labor intensive and had short windows of application with the epoxy mix. This 3-step application with latex based products looked much more beginner-friendly. This product had very good reviews, and with good reason! Low odor, good weekend project. I am very pleased at how the counter turned out. I had a 30 sq ft area, so plenty of product to use. I was worried about the amount of sanding required, but once we got started it went quite well. I wanted a bit more texture, not glass smooth finish, so really just knocked off the rough edges. I actually applied three coats of the clear coat, the counter was glossier after each one, I preferred the higher gloss appearance. I would definitely use this product again, and am even thinking of resurfacing my bathroom vanity with the left over!

We used this product on our old, damaged laminate countertops. The finished result is a like-new laminate appearance. It's not as smooth as original but the texture is nice. The instructions are comprehensive and we followed them to a "T." We also watched DAICH's YouTube video which was incredibly helpful. It's been a month and there is no sign of peeling, chipping, or cracking. Application was easy and using our kitchen exhaust was enough to clear the air without needing a respirator. I prepped Friday night, applied the basecoat and stone coat Saturday, then applied the clear coat Sunday. We could use the countertop by Monday. Some tips: use a knife to score along the tape edge before removing the painter's tape because without scoring it, the product will peel a bit. Also, use a vacuum while sanding. It's not too dusty but the shopvac certainly helped. Finally, despite the instructions, hand-sand. An orbital sander took too much stone coat off but spot re-applying easily fixed that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Product! I had terrible baby blue laminate counter tops that would have cost thousands to replace with quartz or concrete (about 40 sq ft total), and it would not have increased the value of my home that much, so it wasn't worth it. I bought one application and it covered all with extra left over. This product looks beautiful. Very similar to look of concrete. The seal gives a nice shine, and they seem very durable. Product was easy to use, aside from the fact that its kind of difficult to get an even spread of the stone pieces, especially on the 2nd coat, but I like the look so it's fine. That would be my only complaint if any. It was easy to sand the counters lightly, easy to apply the base, easy to apply the seal. It's time consuming only in the waiting in between drying time, but if you have a long weekend without any real cooking required, its perfect. I will say the color is a lot more gray than the picture shows. Was kind of expecting a creamy color, but it is still beautiful. I hope they last a long time.

Worked awesome on my outdated countertops, and I love that the whole kit has everything you need, except a palm sander, which I suggest using. I recommend watching the video a couple of times before you get started too, definitely helps. When sanding at the end before you top coat, use the palm sander, it makes it way easier and you don't scratch the paint/stone coat underneath plus it makes it super smooth. Be careful when using the sanding sheets (included in the whole packet) on the edges, don't sand too hard or it will sand away the stone coating. Also, make sure to use a utility knife to score the painter's tape for removal at the end, it can be a little tricky to remove the tape without lifting some of your new countertop coating with it...very important. Some people suggested re-taping between coats...I wouldn't recommend it, too much work, lots of waste, plus any dirt or dust on the tape can get onto the coat that's drying. Awesome product, looks way better than my old countertops, and super cheap!! ;)

Everyone who has come to my house has commented on how great it looks. One friend said it looked too good to be a DIY job. For an even nicer result, my husband routered the edge of our formica counter to give it a nice profile. I highly recommend doing that if you have plain formica counters. I did not sand the stone coat until it had cured for 24 hours, but did sand a small patched area much sooner. When I use the rest of the kit to do my vanity I will sand sooner. The instructions say you can sand before fully dry, but really it should recommend always sanding before dry. The fully dry/cured stone was HARD to sand, whereas the less dry stone coat was much easier to smooth. This kit was easier to use than an epoxy kit we'd used in the past, and the leftover material is still usable. I have enough coating to cover my bathroom vanity area and will still have some product left for patching. If it holds up half as well as the epoxy it's going to be one of our most successful DIY home improvement projects ever!

The instructions state you can have anew counter top in less than 24 hours; not true. It took 3-4 days but was definitely worth it. My sister and I worked together on this project. First we rounded the sharp edges of the laminate counter to give them a more modern look. The 2 coats of base coat went on nicely. The mineral paint is kind of hard to get even and I would suggest rolling first coat in one direction and second in another and then dabbing on the mineral paint in areas that look bare. Instructions state to sand final coat to your desired level of smoothness which resulted in bare spots which needed to be dabbed again to cover then let dry again. The final coat is really thin making the second coat difficult to figure out where you have already rolled it on but the end result is very nice. My Kitchen counters look awesome.

It is very easy to use. Make sure you follow directions, watch the video. Ours turned out beautiful. The only thing I would prefer is a satin finish top coat, instead of semi-gloss.
