Product Details

DAP High Heat Fire Resistant Mortar is non-combustible silicate cement used for patching chipped firebrick in fireplaces and sealing wood-burning stoves. It adheres firmly to the firebrick when wet or dry and sets rock hard when fired. It can also be used for applications in wood frame construction where an ASTM E136 non-combustible sealant is required, such as sealing around vents, pipes, ducts and chimneys at ceiling and floor level prior to the application of drywall products. It has been tested in accordance with ASTM E136 and withstands temperatures up to 2,000° F. DAP High Heat Mortar is not a fire-rated sealant as defined by Underwriters Laboratories and is not appropriate for fire-rated applications.

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry. DAP HIGH HEAT FIRE RESISTANT MORTAR is a non-combustible silicate cement for applications in wood frame construction where an ASTM E136 non-combustible sealant is required, such as filling around vents, pipes, ducts and chimneys at ceiling and/or floor level prior to the application of drywall products. While this product can also be used for minor wood burning stove and fireplace applications/repairs, when fully dried/cured, it is not flexible. The expansion/contraction that may occur when applied to long joints/seams in metal, may cause cracking/loss of performance. Additionally, if applied to glass, it can etch the surface and be impossible to remove. Should you have additional questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact DAP Technical Customer Service at 888-327-8477.

A:  Absolutely. I've been using it for decades. Is it made for this? probably not....BUT.....the pipe seam where the pipe meets the stove and the seam at the through wall connection is where I use it. This fills the seams and dries hard like cement.

This is the best "caulking" for the hot Southern exposure side of any structure that I've ever used-period! Doesn't have to be for a fireplace at all. It sets up fast and hard, and it washes off your hands with soap and water. It can be painted over very quickly. A lot of the homes around here are dark colored and in the summer can get very hot on the sunny side. This material will stay put where most of the others just can't handle the heat.
