Q:Can it be used for exterior walls
by|May 28, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for posting your inquiry. DAP Platinum Patch would be the best option for exterior repair applications. Of note, Platinum is specifically designed and recommended for minor/cosmetic repairs, DAP does not recommend this product for large format spreading, veneering or "skim coating" (resurfacing) applications. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

Q:Does this product work well for filling nail holes in interior PVC base molding trim? If not, wha...

    Answer This Question

A:  The work that you describe would require two different products. For gaps and joints, such as inside/outside corners where joint movement is likely, we would recommend DAP 3.0 Window, Door and Siding Sealant or DAP DYNAFLEX 230. For nail hole filling, CrackShot would be an excellent choice, however, as with all spackling compounds, it must be painted for durability.

A:  According to the Versatex website, they specifically mention this DAP product for filling holes. On past projects, I have previously used the Minwax 2-part epoxy, which requires a lot more effort to apply and prepare for painting. Currently working on a new home, and am looking forward to using this product.

Q:How thick can you apply this with out it cracking and does it work well with fiberglass tape

          Answer This Question

A:  As a general rule, it is best to keep applications to 1/4" or below. For repairs deeper than 1/4”, apply two or more layers allowing spackling to dry between applications. To add extra strength to the repair, DAP Crackshot can be used with fiberglass reinforcing tape.

            Waste if money
Horrible substitute for real drywall compound. I used it to fill some dents and imperfections on my drywall because I was too lazy to mix such a small amount of compound. The best thing about this product is the container. I emptied the DAP product, washed the container, and filled it with regular drywall compound for small jobs in the near future.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are not clear as to the intent of your post, as you appear to be expressing a preference for a competitive product that has a completely different chemistry/formula and performance characteristics, when compared to DAP CRACKSHOT Spackling. DAP CRACKSHOT Spackling is ready to use acrylic-latex (water-based) formula, not a "dry-mix" (reactive formula). This product is designed, marketed, and labeled for use on minor cosmetic repairs, such as: nail/screw holes, cracks, etc. (not for large/deep repairs). While these two distinctly different products/chemistries do have applications that overlap, they are not fully interchangeable. If your preference is for a "dry-mix" (reactive formula), the proper comparative DAP chemistry/formula would be DAP Fast Patch 30 (Dry-Mix). Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP
Cracks easily, and bubbles over tape.
This spacking paste failed miserably. Cracked the next day, and when using tape bubbles come through. Other mix powder with water spackling paste succeeded where this paste failed miserably.

                Disappointed
This spackling is not "high performance" as the can states. It is only about as hard as drywall compound at more than double the cost. The problem I found was that it stays water soluble. Because of that any filling will swell when water base paint is applied. I ended up spot priming every nail hole with oil base primer after sanding. If you are trying to do a first class paint job try another product. I don't know how it can be rated "exterior use" if it remains permanently water soluble after drying.

We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP® CrackSHOT® High Performance Spackling Paste. The only way one would experience the issues that you describe, would be if the product (or any other spackling/joint compound) was exposed to an outside source of moisture prior to being fully dried. The product is water resistant once fully dried, however, exterior applications require paint application for long term protection from the elements. DAP

                  Works great for nail holes!
I had to fill (what felt like 1,000,000,000,000 holes) in the baseboard and shoe I put down, and this stuff did the trick. Very minimal shrinking and sanded easier than Famowood/Dap Plastic Wood. Leave the hole a little proud (sticking out above the wood) and sand it flush for a finish you won't see nail holes in. My dad is a painter of 25 years and says this stuff is ok (not the best he's come across) and it does a great job. It needs no primer and can be sanded and painted over within a couple of hours. Is it rock hard like a wood filler, NO. Does it do what you need it to do for trim work....Heck yeah it does!!!!

                  Amazing
I had a couple of holes in my wall that needed to be patched up before I painted my bathroom. This product is excellent just allow a full 8 hours dry time.
