Q:Can you use it on glass? And just sand it after?
by|May 13, 2023

Answer This Question

A:  This product is not intended for use on glass.  This product is intended for use on drywall to fill or patch small holes or cracks.  Also, sanding glass will scratch its surface,  so that is not recommended.

Q:How long do I need to wait to sand? I tried when it turned white and it was still very moist
          by|Apr 22, 2023

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP DryDex Premium Lightweight Low Dust Joint Compound. The DAP DryDex Premium Lightweight Low Dust Joint Compound is a water-based formula, as such, the sole drying mechanism is the evaporation of water. Dry time can be significantly impacted by cool or humid application conditions, moisture in the application surfaces or by thick (deep) applications of the product. This formula is designed to turn from pink to white, once all of the water contained in it has evaporated. Under certain conditions, it is possible to see a color change (from pink to white) on the surface of deep applications or in applications where the substrate is not completely dry. In these cases additional dry time will be required. Without more details about your application conditions and project specifics, it is difficult to provide a more detailed reply in this format. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

This is a bad product, don't use
There's something wrong with this product. It took a week to dry in sunny and warm weather, with low humidity and no rain. When I was finally able to sand and paint it (benjamin moore regal select latex paint), it crackled everywhere I had applied the joint compound. I sanded it down again, then did a coat of zinsser shellac primer, but it still crackled a second time. I tried contacting DAP and they had no good advice for me. I'm on a tight deadline and I still don't know how to fix this.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Drydex Lightweight Joint Compound. This product is designed and intended for use in the finishing of gypsum panel joints, nail heads and metal corner beads (thin "skim coating" applications). As this is a water-based formula, the sole drying mechanism is the evaporation of water. Dry time can be significantly impacted by cool or humid application conditions, moisture in the application surfaces or by thick (deep) applications of the product. For applications where deeper/thicker filling is required, the use of a heavier bodied spackling compound such as ALEX PLUS Spackling, would likely be a better solution. At your convenience, please contact DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information regarding your project and to provide you with more specific usage guidance or to recommend an alternate product. Easy as pie
I am currently remodeling my laundry room and had a lot of holes and touch ups to base of the walls. I like using this product, starts out pink and then changes color to white when dry.

I'm a first time user and had great results!
I wasn't even familiar with joint compound. I knew it as "mud, " and this was my first try at it. When I sanded my guest bathroom walls, I discovered several layers of old wallpaper. This was my first time using joint compound, and I think it worked great. I did use a sealer before and after because of the wallpaper and damaged drywall.

Dry Dex uses - how we use it.
Dry Dex works great for texturing walls. You can add water to thin to proper consistency. We use our hands in latex gloves to texture, lightly smoothing with a 4” scraper. We let it dry and harden for at least a day. It’s best to use a light coat of paint the first time, and then do a second coat later. Too much paint at one time over the texture can cause the texture to soften and Lose form, if you keep going over it with a heavy brush. It’s great to fill bigger cracks and holes. Color change is useful, but we wait even longer before painting. You may find it easier to use a sheetrock joint compound if your simply taping between sheets of sheetrock and smoothing to a fine finish.

                    It does crack when drying
This compound seems to be good if you are filling small nail or anchor holes. For larger repairs involving mesh tape, you'll need something else.

OK for patchup jobs. Terrible for taping.
This stuff is OK for filling up small holes and only that. I tried this with drywall tape, multiple times, and the tape would always lift or the compound would crack. I even watered down the compound, and/or wet the tape prior to application and the tape would always lift or cracks would appear - even after multiple layers to cover it up! I redid the same two joints at least 4 times and always got the same results. A different joint compound worked fine on the very first application.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP Premium Lightweight Joint Compound. Based on your commentary indicating: "the tape would always lift or the compound would crack.", it would appear that you are describing product that is too dry/thick to properly "wet in" (potentially aged/expired material). At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you about your experience. When calling in please have the product package available, as we will need to collect product information from it to determine its age. DAP

                        Product shrinks tremendously
I don't know how they can claim this product does not shrink. If using it to fill even a screw hole, two applications are necessary.

Thank you for posting your feedback, we're sorry to see your low star review on DAP DryDex Spackling. This product is designed, marketed, and labeled for use on minor cosmetic repairs, such as: nail/screw holes, cracks, etc. (not for large format repairs). When filling deep, but narrow defects (such as a screw/nail hole), the filler must be “packed” into the hole a thin layer at a time, with a drying interval between. The most common cause for the issue you describe as “shrinkage” results from application in excess of the recommended depth. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "4. One application is usually sufficient for small repairs. For repairs deeper than 1/8”, apply two or more layers allowing spackling to dry between applications. 5. For a smoother finish, dip putty knife in water and lightly smooth spackling. 6. Spackling will change color to white when surface can accept a second application or is ready to be painted or sanded in 1 to 5 hours." Because you did not provide any background regarding your project, application technique or application conditions, it is difficult to provide a more detailed response in this format.
